"Others 'snatched' an individual from the street without proper identification and placed him in an unmarked vehicle. These are tactics we expect from authoritarian regimes — not our democracy."The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force worked the Denver protests shortly after Floyd's death, announcing they would "apprehend and charge violent agitators hijacking peaceful protests," though federal authorities' presence has mostly been limited in Denver.Also, on Wednesday, Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet joined Oregon senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden and Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy in introducing proposed legislation to block the Trump Administration from deploying federal forces "as a shadowy paramilitary against Americans."“The Trump Administration’s decision to send unidentified federal agents into Portland to terrorize protesters who are exercising their First Amendment rights only sows more fear and division,” Bennet said in a news release. “America is not a battlespace. This should not be happening in a healthy democracy, and this legislation aims to prevent our federal government — including the president — from using these tactics.”Colorado Gov. Jared Polis on Tuesday said "we have no indication or reason to believe" federal forces are being deployed to Colorado, where some protests have continued, both in response to Floyd's death and the death of Elijah McClain in Aurora."Based on what I've read in the press, I have concerns this is a violation of people's rights," Polis said. A man assaulted his elderly father when he came home from work and found that dinner wasn't ready, police in Pennsylvania claim.Frank Steinetz, 50, of Taylor, Pennsylvania, repeatedly punched his 83-year-old dad in the head and face on Monday night, according to Scranton's Times-Tribune.The newspaper reported that when Steinetz came home at 5:45 p.m. he got mad because his father had not prepared a meal for him.A neighbor called police after hearing screaming from Steinetz's house. The neighbor told officers he could hear Steinetz asking, "Oh, does that hurt?" along with what sounded like a physical assault.Steinetz's father, who was described as "extremely frail" by police, had bruises on his face, arms and leg after the incident, according to the Associated Press."He beat me up," the 83-year-old victim told police, according to The Times-Tribune.Steinetz was arrested on charges of aggravated and simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment. A highly anticipated audit of the city's water-billing practices could be delayed. City Auditor Eduardo Luna made the comments Thursday at the city's first public hearing after hundreds of residents complained about mysteriously high water bills. "Some of the key billing data that we're looking for may be delayed, they're looking about providing that to us in about two months, which could potentially have an impact when we complete this audit," Luna said. The city's environment committee - which includes four City Council members - held the meeting in order to question public utilities officials over the water bills.San Diegans have complained for months about spiking bills - some more than ,000. They said the city water department met their concerns with indifference, ultimately leading some to get shut off notices."We sincerely apologize to all customers that have been affected by this situation," said City Public is Utilities Director Vic Bianes. Bianes said the department has added staff to work on resident concerns, is waiving fees for meter tests, and is having supervisors sign off on daily work. The department is also promising not to shut off water for anyone disputing a bil. "You have my word and that of my team that we're doing everything we can to correct this challenging situation," Bianes said.Councilmember Chris Cate said he was glad to see the changes being made."The initial response to these concerns was lackluster," he said. The department says it has refunded 641 bills so far, with the average about 0. Councilman Dave Alvarez, who chaired the meeting, said he's still lacking answers about what caused the spikes."Good news for the consumer," he said. A California police officer was charged Wednesday in connection with a fatal shooting at an Oakland-area Walmart store in April.San Leandro Police Officer Jason Fletcher was charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection with an incident where he fatally shot 33-year-old Steven Taylor on April 18.According to the Alameda County District Attorney's office, a security guard at the store called police when Taylor tried to leave San Leandro Walmart with a baseball bat and a tent without paying.Fletcher responded to the call and approached Taylor as he entered the store. The officer tried to grab the baseball bat from Taylor, and when he couldn't get control of the bat he drew his stun gun.After firing the stun gun, Taylor stumbled forward with the bat sitll in his hand. According to body camera footage, Fletcher repeatedly asked Taylor to drop the bat. Fletcher then fired his gun once, a shot that proved to be fatal.In its charging statement, the District Attorney's office, claimed that Taylor "posed no threat of imminent deadly force or serious bodily injury" to the officers or anyone else in the store because he had "clearly experienced the shock of the taser as he was leaning forward over his feet and stumbling forward."Fletcher's lawyer, Michael Rains, told the San Francisco Chronicle that he was "very disappointed" that the officer had been charged and that the charges were "undeserved."The decision to file the criminal complaint was made after an intensive investigation and thorough analysis of the evidence and the current law," Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley said.Lee Merritt, an attorney for Taylor's family, told NBC News that Taylor was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the shooting.Fletcher will be arraigned on Sept. 15 at a county courthouse in Dublin, California. 1845

A Fort Hood soldier has been identified as the victim of a drowning in a Texas lake over the weekend.Officials say the body of Spc. Francisco Gilberto Hernandezvargas was recovered after a boating incident on Stillhouse Hollow Lake. The lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Lampasas River, southwest of Belton. The 24-year-old, whose home of record is listed as Woodside, New York, entered the army in May 2017 as an automatic rifleman and has been assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since December 2017.The Bell County Sheriff's Office was alerted that a male, while riding an inner tube behind a boat, went under water and did not surface on Saturday. This took place in the area of Dana Peak Park on Stillhouse Hollow Lake, according to officials.His body was recovered on Sunday.Hernandezvargas’ awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon and the Army Service Ribbon.“The Black Knight family is heartbroken by the loss of Spc. Francisco Hernandezvargas. Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time,” said Lt. Col. Neil Armstrong, commander of 1st Bn. 5th Cav. Regt. “Spc. Hernandezvargas served his country honorably both stateside while at Fort Hood and abroad in Korea and Romania and this tragic loss is felt by every member within our formation.”The unit is cooperating with local authorities as this incident is currently under investigation.The drowning marks the fourth death of a Fort Hood soldier in the past few months. Specialist Vanessa Guillen, Private Gregory Wedel-Morales, and Private Mejhor Morta passed away in separate incidents before Hernandezvargas.
