SAN DIEGO - At St. John The Evangelist's Sunday night service, the pews were packed to hear why their pastoral associate was resigning.Aaron Bianco was asked to come to St. John August of 2016. His work for the San Diego church: organizing events, budgets and other behind the scenes tasks. His goal, to build up a more inclusive church.Bianco has been married to his husband for 10 years last month, and once he started at St. John, so did the attacks."They've threatened me from shooting me down across the street, to throwing Molotov cocktails into the church," Bianco said.The hate groups sent emails equating him to a pedophile and threatening him. His tires were slashed, fire thrown at the church doors, the office broken into and spray painted with a gay slur."They're no different from organized crime or a terrorist group. They will continue until they get their way," Bianco said their goal was to force him out. "I'm convinced that the gospel is on my side, and they can spew their hate, but I'm not going to allow them to make me hate them back," Bianco said.Last week his personal information including photos of his family and his home address was published on a conservative Catholic website. Bianco said he saw someone in their yard in the middle of the night watching the house.Since the threats, he's added security to his home and filed police reports.He realized it was all too much, "My life and those of my family are more important than any job."Bianco addressed the packed church at Sunday night's mass, "when hate rages like a fire, love rains down, and I feel it from so many of you in this room."Bianco said he believes there is more good in the world than bad, explaining he's received encouraging notes from people all over the world.After his speech, the church erupted, "It made me so happy that everybody stood there and clapped for the longest ovation I've ever heard in a church in my life. Letting him know that we love you, we care about you and you're going to be missed," Parishioner Berena Pe?a said.She attended the church a decade prior and stopped coming because she didn't feel welcome as a lesbian. Her friend convinced her to try again two years ago. She said she could feel the difference, and it woke her up.Bianco said this is not the end, and he will keep fighting. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A former assistant at a local nursing home is accused of raping a disabled patient. In a story that you'll first see on 10News, Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner discovered the patient was a stroke victim who uses a wheelchair. What may have happened behind the walls of the Paradise Hills nursing home is difficult to process. An accusation of rape seemed to have slid under the radar for almost a year, until now. It was a few months ago when 10News was tipped off about Reo Vista Healthcare Center, which touts being named one of Newsweek's top nursing homes and having a Medicare 5-star rating.This week, San Diego Police confirmed that detectives referred the case to the District Attorney's office, which is charging 26-year-old Ariel Chavarin-Camargo with forcible rape and a "lewd act upon a dependent adult by a caretaker". He is now sitting in a South Bay jail. According to state documents, it happened last February to a 58-year-old woman who uses a wheelchair and was living in the nursing home after suffering from a stroke and panic disorder. The documents report that the morning after the alleged assault, she reportedly came "crying" to a nurse, claiming that the night before, when she was returning from the kitchen and on her way back, "one of the CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants) stated that one of her breasts was exposed." According to the documents, he “followed her and he exposed his private parts to her". She reportedly said, "the CNA raped her" for up to three minutes. A forensic exam reportedly found male DNA in her private area. According to the documents, when he was later questioned, he suggested that she came onto him but admitted "it happened” and “there was penetration". He reportedly said, "I feel bad. It happened so fast." Prosecutors believe that man is Chavarin-Camargo. He resigned after the reported rape. The administration of Reo Vista Healthcare Center sent 10News the following statement on Tuesday."We are grateful to local law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office for successfully prosecuting this individual for their crime. Our team took immediate steps last February to suspend the individual, to notify, and to fully cooperate with authorities. We take all matters regarding patient safety and the conduct of staff seriously. Moreover, the actions of this individual do not reflect the values we hold at our facility. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Five years since it was last open to the public, the iconic "Plunge" swimming pool is finally set to welcome San Diegans at Belmont Park."Oh, we're so excited. It's highly anticipated," said Belmont Park spokesperson Michelle McKee.The pool was one of the original attractions when the amusement park opened in 1925. However, it had run into hard times in recent years and has been closed for much of the last decade. One management company went bankrupt. The next came up with a renovation plan, only to discover dangerous, corroding conditions inside, leading to the pool's closure in 2014. Work finally began in earnest in 2017, tearing out much of the Plunge infrastructure, while trying to maintain a link to its historic nature."It was a wonderful pool," McKee said. "We wanted to maintain the structure of some of those elements, so that remains here in the pool."A signature element, a large mural by the renowned artist Wyland, had to be removed. In its place is a new, bright, open look. Windows surround the pool, giving swimmers a view of the ocean. A retractable roof will help control the climate inside the glass space.The high-end gym company "Fit" is building a club on the upper floors. Fit will manage the pool. Members will have access to the pool. The public can purchase day passes. SAN DIGEO (KGTV) - A former San Diegan who lives 3 miles from the site of a deadly, massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, is describing the terrifying moments of the blast. Elie Shammas and his family were inside their 6-story Beirut apartment. It all began just after 6pm, and it felt like an earthquake."In San Diego, feels like a rumble, but this was a jittery," said Shammas.Shammas, who taught at SDSU a decade ago, says all his locked windows swung open."The whole house was moving, and then the shock wave hit us. It was very loud. Outside, it was all dusty. I have three kids, who were jittery and scared," said Shammas.Shammas raced downstairs and snapped a photo of a huge smoke plume. Shammas says he can't help but recall Lebanon's bloody civil war."I lived through Lebanon through the war. I'm used to bombings and shellings, and this was like nothing I've seen before," said Shammas.Across the world, in San Diego, news of the blast hitting the Lebanese community hard."Just a shock. When you see it, you can't believe it's happening," said Shammas.Nabi Geha, who owns La Miche Kabobgee in Kearny Mesa, immediately called his niece and a cousin, who both live about four miles from the blast site.
