The CEO of a skincare company has issued an apology after she accused a man of "defacing private property" by chalking the words "Black Lives Matter" on the building where he lives in San Francisco.The CEO of LAFACE skincare, Lisa Alexander, issued a public apology to James Juanillo, the man she accosted."The last 48 hours has taught me that my actions were those of someone who is not aware of the damage caused by being ignorant and naive to racial inequalities. In the video, Alexander accuses Juanillo of "defacing private property" as he stenciled "Black Lives Matter" in yellow chalk on a wall at his home.Alexander and Larkin told Jaunillo that he was "free to express his opinion," but "that was not the way to do it."Juanillo then asked if it would be OK if he were chalking his own property. Alexander and Larkin said that they knew Juanillo didn't own the property because they "knew who lived there."Juanillo encouraged Alexander and Larkin to call the police if they felt unsafe. Juanillo told KGO in San Francisco that the two did call the police, but when officers arrived, they quickly recognized Juanillo as a resident."I didn't even show (the police) my ID," Juanillo told KGO.KGO also spoke to one of the property owners, who said he does not know Alexander or Larkin.The video of the incident spread quickly on social media, with many referring to Alexander as a "Karen" — a slang term for an entitled woman, often used in the context of racism.Alexander's identity was not independently confirmed until she came forward to apologize. However, Birchbox — a makeup subscription service — released a statement on Twitter denouncing Alexander's actions after Twitter users brought the video to their attention. Birchbox said that it had not worked with LAFACE in "several years," but nonetheless had "officially cut ties with the company."The video also prompted trolls to leave negative Yelp reviews of a Los Angeles-based skincare store, My LA Face, which has no connection to Alexander or her business, LAFACE. The Department of Labor reported Thursday that 1.5 million Americans filed initial claims for unemployment during the week ending June 13, bringing a 13-week total to about 45 million claims.Thursday's figures were down about 58,000 from last week's unemployment filings.Weekly claims for unemployment have been falling for nearly three straight months after peaking at about 6 million a week in late March. But weekly unemployment claims remain historically high.Prior to the pandemic, the record high for weekly unemployment claims came in 2006, when 665,000 people filed for unemployment. The Department of Labor has been tracking the statistics since 1967.Economists often use weekly unemployment claims as a reliable tool when predicting unemployment. However, some surveys indicate that initial weekly claims may be underestimating the amount of those unemployed.At least one survey from the Economic Policy Institute found that millions of Americans gave up trying to seek benefits or didn't even attempt to due to states' overwhelmed and antiquated unemployment systems.Until recently, the stock market has been on a steady rise since March despite the staggering unemployment numbers. The Department of Education on Friday proposed new rules for dealing with sexual harassment and assault on college campuses that would bolster the rights of those accused of wrongdoing.The proposed rules, which now face a public comment period of 60 days before they are enshrined, seek to narrow the definition of sexual misconduct on campuses at a time of national reckoning about sexual abuse."Every survivor of sexual violence must be taken seriously, and every student accused of sexual misconduct must know that guilt is not predetermined," Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said in a statement. "We can, and must, condemn sexual violence and punish those who perpetrate it, while ensuring a fair grievance process. Those are not mutually exclusive ideas. They are the very essence of how Americans understand justice to function."The new rules would "adopt a clear definition of sexual harassment actionable under Title IX," which prohibits discrimination based on sex for schools and programs that receive federal funding, including protection from sexual harassment.One stipulation would narrow the definition of sexual harassment to mean "unwelcome conduct on the basis of sex that is so severe, pervasive and objectively offensive that it denies a person access to the school's education program or activity." The new policy would be a departure from the Obama administration's broader definition of sexual harassment as "unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature."The new rules also place an emphasis on "presumption of innocence" and would allow those accused the option of cross-examining their accusers.The department's announcement on Friday was certain to be met with outrage from victim advocacy groups. The Department of Labor just released its latest report showing jobless claims in the U.S. remain elevated. About 1.43 million people filed new unemployment benefits claims last week. There are about 19.3 million continued claims or people still unemployed.With so many Americans looking for work right now, a lot of people are being targeted by scammers.“I was actually scammed myself,” said Amelia Brockman.In March, shortly after Brockman uploaded her profile to the gig site Upwork, she had her first experience with what’s known as an employment scam.“On Upwork, I was looking for work and a job I found would pay a lot of money for it,” said Brockman. “I was desperate because I didn’t want to go back to actual outside work.”This put her in a vulnerable place, where she ignored some warning signs.“I got the job. It seemed legit,” she said. “Then, he started asking if I am going to pay you, I need you to go buy Google cards. Something about how he needed to put me in the system.”She never got paid, in fact, she lost roughly ,000 in Google card purchases.“People are heartless at this point. Not everyone, just the scammers,” she said. “It is getting ridiculous.”Over the past three months, while looking for other work, Brockman has come across at least 40 other job scam posts, including one where during an online interview, the interviewer started asking her for personal info and to purchase equipment.“I called the company and eventually I texted him back and said ‘dear sir, that is a scam. You don’t work for them,’ and he blocked me,” said Brockman.According to the Better Business Bureau, employment scams are the riskiest scams right now. A newly released report by the BBB, shows 53% of the people targeted by employment scams are unemployed and roughly 75% of the people actually scammed are in a personal financial crisis.To avoid being a victim of an employment scam yourself, the BBB says there are a few things you can do. They include noticing if a job posting has grammatical errors or misspellings. If it does, it is usually a scam.The BBB says you should remember that you should never have to pay to get a job or have to provide you credit card and bank account information. Legitimate employers provide a paper check option.Lastly, try to research the company or employer to see if they have had complaints.If you come across a posting that you suspect is a scam or get scammed, report it.“You should go report it, because I did not report mine until months later to the point where another state called me and you don’t want to be scammed the same way,” said Brockman. 2613
