SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Confirmed flu cases in San Diego County are well behind the rate of confirmed cases during last year's flu season, according to county health officials.The county has confirmed 189 flu cases so far this flu season compared to 441 cases at this time last year. According to county public health officer Wilma Wooten, flu cases usually increase during the holidays due to increased traveling and large family gatherings."Holiday gatherings and celebrations bring people together in large groups raising the possibility of people getting sick and making others ill," Wooten said. "Get a flu shot before the flu starts to spread and so that you are protected during the holidays."The county's weekly influenza report found 33 lab-confirmed flu cases for the week of Nov. 4-10. Only one county resident has died due to flu complications this season, compared to three at this time last flu season. Flu complications killed 342 people in San Diego County last season, the highest total since the county began tracking flu deaths roughly 20 years ago.The county and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that everyone 6 months or older get vaccinated against the flu each year. It is especially important for those at risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions, to get the vaccine. Residents should also wash their hands regularly, stay away from sick people and clean surfaces that are touched often.The flu vaccine is available at doctors' offices, local retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health center. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Arizona man who carried out a series of knifepoint rapes in the city of San Diego 24 years ago will be sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison early next year following his guilty plea to six rape counts.Christopher VanBuskirk, 47, of Goodyear, pleaded guilty Monday to threatening the victims with a knife while sexually assaulting them on four occasions between August and November of 1995, according to San Diego police.Deputy District Attorney Martin Doyle said Vanbuskirk also pleaded guilty to two knifepoint rapes committed in Riverside County in March 2002 and November 2004, with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office giving San Diego County prosecutors jurisdiction over those two cases.RELATED: Man accused of sexually assaulting six women since 1995 faces 190 yearsVanbuskirk is slated to be sentenced Feb. 20.Prosecutors said the four San Diego cases occurred twice in the Tierrasanta neighborhood, once in Pacific Beach, and once near San Diego Mesa College. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials in San Diego County reported 269 new COVID-19 infections Sunday, bringing the total to 54,583 since mid-February, and two new deaths, bringing the overall fatality total to 870.The two deaths were men reported to have died earlier this month. They ranged in age from late 60s to early 70s, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.Of the 10,819 new tests reported, 2% returned positive. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 2.7%. The 7-day daily average of tests is 11,127.Two new community outbreaks were confirmed, one in a health-care setting and the other in a restaurant. In the past seven days -- Oct. 18 through Oct. 24 -- 26 community outbreaks were confirmed.A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.Of all cases, 3,850 -- or 7.1% -- have required hospitalization. And 889 -- or 1.6% -- of all cases and 23.1% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.Meanwhile, all students at San Diego State University remained under a stay-at-home advisory announced Thursday. The advisory began at 6 p.m. Friday and will run through Nov. 2 at 6 a.m. University officials said the move was made to discourage students from participating in Halloween events where physical distancing cannot be done. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person at Southwestern College has tested positive for tuberculosis and may have exposed others to the disease, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.The agency is working with the college to notify people who were possible exposed to TB. The period of possible exposure is from last Sept. 10 through Feb. 21, according to the HHSA.Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed do not become infected."We are recommending that all the identified people get tested to make sure they are not infected," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease."The HHSA and college are reaching out to students and other members of the public who possibly interacted with the positive-testing individual. They can go to the college's Student Health Services Student Center, Room 601F, 900 Otay Lakes Road, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.Affected college employees will be tested separately by Occupational Health.The infected person was not publicly identified, nor did officials specify whether it was a student or staffer.Symptoms of active tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Tuberculosis can be treated and cured with medication. People who have TB symptoms or are immuno-compromised are encouraged to see their medical health care provider to rule out TB.Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the San Diego region but has been decreasing since the early 1990s and has stabilized in recent years. In 2013, 206 cases were reported in the county, the lowest number since local TB cases peaked at 469 in 1993. There were 237 cases reported in 2017 and 226 in 2018. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspected hit-and-run driver who allegedly struck and gravely injured a bicyclist last month in the Midtown area was arrested in a shopping center parking lot in Kern County, it was reported Wednesday.San Diego police identified the suspected driver last week as Mauricio Flores and also released the name of a woman, Jessica Bailey, suspected of riding in the van with Flores.The pair were in a 2005 Dodge Caravan with Georgia license places that struck a bicyclist around 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 21 on West Washington Street at India Street in the Midtown area, police said.RELATED: Bicyclist sustains life-threatening injury in hit-and-runThe victim suffered a life-threatening head injury and remains in the hospital, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.In video shot by a witness and released by San Diego police, the driver could be seen stopping after the collision and getting out of the van.The video then showed the driver and passenger going to the injured man on the side of the road before the driver tugs the bent bicycle out from under the front of the van and sets it aside. He and the female passenger then got back into the van and drove away.A second passenger in the van has not been identified by police and no description of the man has been disclosed.An off-duty CHP officer who saw a flier about the collision spotted a suspicious looking van bearing CA exempt plates, typically used by state-owned vehicles, while riding his motorcycle in the Lake Isabella area over the weekend and notified the local office, CHP Officer Robert Rodriguez told the Union-Tribune.The officer assigned to that area -- roughly 35 miles northeast of Bakersfield -- went looking for the van early Tuesday morning and found it in a Vons parking lot, this time with Vermont license places, Rodriguez told the newspaper.
