On World Autism Awareness Day, Monday, April 2, Pennsylvania theme park Sesame Place announced that it was the first theme park in the world to complete training to become a Certified Autism Center (CAC). The park's certification was granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). IBCCES says that Sesame Place is "the first theme park in the world to receive such a distinction."Sesame Place is located at 100 Sesame Road in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The park features rides, shows, parades, and full size characters and opens for the season on April 28 at 10:00 a.m.The Sesame team members were trained in sensory awareness, motor skills, autism overview, program development, social skills, communication, environment, and emotional awareness, so that staff members can cater to all guests who visit the park. One of the most helpful outcomes of this certification is the IBCCES?Sensory Guide, which breaks down each of the rides' stimuli. This guide grades the rides in terms of touch, taste, sound, smell, and sight stimulation. The senses are scored from 1, which is a low stimulation, to 10, which is a high stimulation. The park has quiet rooms for guests needing to recover from sensory stimulation from the rides. They also have noise-canceling headphones, or WhispEars, on a first come, first served basis for guests with hearing sensitivity. The park has special areas people can go to and still enjoy parades, without being overwhelmed with direct character interaction. Guests can also take pictures with Julia, a Sesame Street character with autism. Additional resources include Autism Travel, which can help parents explore travel options, and a workshop called See Amazing in All Children, which offers tips to simplify daily life and grow support in the community.Sesame Place has many more options to accommodate with guests needs. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A desperate mother is making a plea for tips after a thief snatched her van, a "lifeline" for her special needs daughter.Veronica Lara lives on Harrison Street. Her 7-year-old daughter, Sophie, suffers from Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, and a rare chromosomal disorder called Pallister-Killian Mosaic Syndrome. A year ago, her family spent ,000 making her 2015 Toyota Sienna wheelchair accessible."It's my daughter's lifeline. We can't go anywhere without it," said Lara.On Tuesday night, with the family inside the home, someone stole it between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. That van is needed for Sophie's many medical appointments.RELATED: NFL game result may have fueled Fallbrook vandalism, destruction of truck"At this point, I will have to cancel her appointments, because I have no mode of transportation for her," said Lara. The loss is not just about getting places. Sophie loves being in the van and getting out of the house."She laughs a lot. She likes looking around and seeing the lights go by," said Lara.Lara worries those laughs will be less frequent.RELATED: Police investigate multiple carjackings in El Cajon"That saddens me. Anything that makes her happy fills my heart with joy," said Lara.Joy is not the word to describe her family's past month. In early November, her husband Juan was shot in Tijuana while waiting at a taco stand. "Armed carjacking ended where he was. He ran, but many people got shot," said Lara.Juan survived gunshots in his hand and stomach. He is no longer able to work as a tow truck driver, which will squeeze the family's finances."I'm still standing strong. I'm a strong momma, but this special needs family has gone through a lot, and this just added to my grief and anxiety ... You don't know what to say anymore," said Lara.Lara's van is insured, but it's not clear how much, if any, of the wheelchair conversion cost will be covered.Anyone with information is asked to call Oceanside Police at 760-435-4900.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help family with expenses. 2051

On Saturday, a gunman stormed the Tree of Life Synagogue, killing 11 people in what the ADL called the deadliest attack ever on Jews in the United States. The horrific, hate-filled minutes were a raw manifestation of anger, division and anti-Semitism.But the response has been the opposite as faiths and cultures came together in grief and solidarity.Crowdfunding campaign "Muslims Unite for Pittsburgh Synagogue" has raised more than 5,000 to help the shooting victims."We wish to respond to evil with good, as our faith instructs us, and send a powerful message of compassion through action," the donation page says. The campaign is organized by the Muslim-American non-profits CelebrateMercy and MPower Change. It's hosted by LaunchGood, an online crowdfunding platform for the Muslim community. The campaign page invites all faiths to contribute, and the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh will work directly with the Tree of Life Synagogue to distribute the funds to the injured victims and grieving families."The Pittsburgh community is our family; what happens to one of us, is felt by us all." The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh said in a statement on this attack. This unifying sentiment is one of the fundraiser's main tenets."Through this campaign, we hope to send a united message from the Jewish and Muslim communities that there is no place for this type of hate and violence in America." the LaunchGood page says.  1458

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Therapy dogs are tasked with healing patients who are up against diversity. But two who walk the halls of Tri-City Medical Center have their own stories of survival."I think every one of us, animal or human, has our own story. We all have our trials and tribulations. And so I think having animals that have been through some difficult times helps them relate with our patients in a much more profound way," said Aaron Byzak, Chief External Affairs Officer for Tri-City Medical Center. Two veterans of the Pet Therapy Program are Prince the poodle and Calamity Jane the golden retriever, one a cancer survivor and the other a trauma survivor. "She's a very strong, strong, little pup, she's got a mind of her own," said Shar Pauley, who rescued Calamity Jane. "And she tells me which rooms she'd like to visit. Sometimes she'll walk down that hallway and then she'll stop and say I think this person needs a visit." The program has been comforting patients for over 20 years now."He's had nine lives, and I think part of his motivation for giving back is he just loves to work, and he loves people," said Mary Gleisberg, Prince's owner. The dogs must go through a rigorous process to earn their badge and must receive a bath before walking their rounds in the hospital. 1304
