SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- On Wednesday, San Diego County health officials reported seven new COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the regions total to 406.Healthcare workers witness this firsthand; many have been by their patients' side during the final moments."We hold their hands, we let them talk to their loved ones through electronic devices," said Dr. Salam Yatooma, an internal medicine physician at Sharp Grossmont. "It's very painful, actually the most stressful thing for us doctors and especially nurses."In his twelve years at the hospital, Yatooma said he has never witnessed anything like this.Yatooma has been on the frontlines since the pandemic began, and while many people have let their guards down, he reminds everyone the virus hasn't gone anywhere. Healthcare workers haven't had a break."There has been an increase, a significant increase, in the number of patients of hospitalizations that we see," he said. "It's definitely correlated with the relaxing of restrictions that the state and county are implementing. People were not wearing masks. People continued to have large gatherings, especially indoors, and people were not socially distancing. Unfortunately, this is going to start to show more and more now."Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said in the last seven days, there have been 24 community COVID-19 outbreaks. The latest outbreaks reported happened in a healthcare setting, a restaurant or bar, a gym, a daycare, and a resort or spa.The outbreaks in community settings are defined as three or more positive COVID-19 cases in people from different households. To date, there have been 17,842 positive cases locally, about 11 percent have required hospitalization, according to the county health officials.Yatooma said while most hospitalized patients he has seen are older in age with underlying health issues, over the last several weeks, there has been a new trend."We did notice there's been an increasing number in the younger people," he said. "20 to 40-years-old."He said he doesn't expect things to slow down at hospitals in the coming months as more people head out, especially during flu season."This is a very dangerous trend we're going into. In the coming few months that we start having the flu," Yatooma said. "Typically, we're almost at capacity when it comes to flu season; now we're going to have two storms coming."He said the ICU is currently at 85 percent capacity.Yatooma urges everyone to follow the simple steps that have proven to make a difference."Follow the local and state guidelines, socially distance, wear a mask, try not to touch your face," he said. 2637

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A fishing shop in Kearny Mesa was burglarized early Sunday morning. The break-in was caught on the San Diego Tackle Traders' surveillance cameras just before 4:30 a.m. The video shows two suspects, wearing masks and gloves, getting into the shop using a crowbar. The two people can be seen walking into the business, on Convoy Court, with a cooler and some type of container, heading towards the back of the shop. The owners of San Diego Tackle Traders say the suspects got away with several fishing reels and rods, a total value of ,000 to 0,00. The owners tell 10News this is a big blow to their small business. They say they work by appointment only and don't advertise their address online because of the value of the items they sell. The owners are now hoping people will keep an eye out for anyone trying to sell brand new fishing equipment. Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department. 964

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Virtual interviews and job fairs are among some of the biggest changes when searching for a new job during the COVID-19 era. And the millions of newly unemployed Americans are vying for fewer jobs.Christy Schmidt, a 34-year-old who lives in Bend, Oregon, has been scouring job boards ever since she was let go by her employer. "The amount of jobs up there or jobs that are very close to a fit for me are just non-existent, and I have come to realize that there are tons of other wonderful qualified people applying for the exact same jobs I am," said Schmidt. She was working as an executive assistant for three vice presidents at Navis, a company that specializes in technology for the hospitality industry. Some of their biggest clients include hotels and resorts."It was literally my dream job. It was the best company culture I had ever been a part of, just some of the most brilliant people that were just so down to earth. I loved going to work every single day," said Schmidt. Schmidt thought working from home would be temporary, just during COVID-19, until the day managers called an all-team meeting."And it was very tough for them to tell us we no longer had jobs, that they were doing everything they could to make the company survive," said Schmidt. After months of searching, she finally found an opportunity that made her hopeful, only to learn it was a scam. When it came time for the virtual interview, the scammer instead wanted to have a text conversation over Google Hangouts. "All they want is personal information; they did not want to know anything about my experience or background," said Schmidt. The FBI says hiring scams have spiked during the pandemic. Now, Schmidt is considering moving out of the small town of Bend to go back home to California, where there are more jobs available. "Maybe I need to relocate myself just to be able to survive right now," said Schmidt. Tim Best, CEO of Bradley-Morris RecruitMilitary, says Schmidt is far from alone. "This isn't going away, so it's not even about, well this is what I need to do now. No, this is a competency we all need to develop because this is here to stay at some level," said Best. The Army veteran has spent the last two decades helping military veterans and their spouses find careers through massive job fairs at venues like Yankee Stadium. Now, they're going virtual."Really, no one understands what a virtual career fair is until they experience it," said Best. Employers market their brand in virtual chat rooms, which can lead to a video interview on the spot. While some sectors, like hospitality and tourism, will likely be slow to come back, essential jobs like delivery drivers are in demand. As well as IT, tech, customer service, online teaching, and construction jobs."I've seen this before in previous recessions, where people do rethink their career paths," said Best. The San Diego Workforce Partnership is offering on-demand training videos online. They're also connecting job seekers with affordable certificate programs to help people learn new skills. Workforce development partners in other cities are offering similar resources. Schmidt is broadening her search, considering jobs she might have overlooked before the pandemic."Knock on every single door because I know eventually one is going to open, and it's going to be the right fit for you," said Schmidt. "And I'm confident that is out there for me as well." 3448

SAN DiEGO (KGTV) - Police deployed tasers to arrest a man following a road rage outburst that got out of control Wednesday evening.Police identified the man as 33-year-old Jason Berard. He was driving a silver SUV that backed into a white pickup truck near Park Boulevard and Howard Avenue in the University Heights neighborhood.  According to the driver of the pickup, they pulled over into a Chevron. The driver of the pickup truck thought they were going to exchange insurance information, but instead, Berard was confrontational.  According to witnesses, Berard punched the other driver before ripping away the man’s cell phone and throwing it on the ground, smashing it.A gas station employee called the police.  After police responded and made contact, police say Berard assaulted an officer. That’s when another officer came to help and fell to the ground during the struggle.Police say Berard took off on foot and got about a block down Howard Avenue but was taken down after an officer using their taser.Berard could be facing battery charges on an officer as well as resisting arrest. 1122

San Diego (KGTV)- Just weeks ago the Veterans Village of San Diego wasn’t sure they’d have the money to fund their annual Stand Down event. But thanks to generous sponsors, the organization is helping hundreds of homeless veterans this weekend. The three-day event is being held at San Diego High School. More than 700 veterans are expected to participate in the event throughout the weekend. A variety of services is being offered. Some veterans say they are in desperate need of housing, while others tell 10News they are just fighting to keep the roofs they already have over their heads. “I’m minding my own business, next thing I hear knocks on the door ‘hey you can’t park here,’” says Vietnam Veteran Robert Ewing who was given 15 parking tickets for his motor home in the last three months. “That’s why I’m here trying to get rid of these.”Ewing says it has been a struggle trying to find a safe place to park his motor home. Among a variety of services, Homeless Court is being provided at the annual Stand Down event. “The City Council needs to sleep on the streets for a couple of nights and see what the homeless go through. It’s no joke,” says Ewing. For more than three decades, the Veterans Village of San Diego has been putting together this event. It brings in more than 100 organizations to help the homeless. Even though donations were low a few weeks ago, organizers say they were never going to cancel the event. They are just grateful for their donors, so they did not have to scale the event down. 1529
