OTTAWA, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Friday that inter-parliamentary exchanges are an integral part of China-Canada relations and of great significance for enhancing mutual understanding and public endorsement of bilateral links.Hu made the remarks when meeting Noel Kinsella, speaker of the Canadian Senate, and Peter Milliken, speaker of the House of Commons.Over the years, said Hu, the National People's Congress (NPC), China's legislature, has maintained a sound relationship of cooperation and friendly exchanges with both chambers of the Canadian parliament.Chinese President Hu Jintao (C) meets with Canadian Senate Speaker Noel A. BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) - The first Chinese language study program for foreign diplomats concluded on Saturday at Hanban, the executive body of the Chinese Language Council International.The program, which started on February 27 with a two-hour class every Saturday, had attracted 31 diplomats from 16 countries to China. The countries included Slovenia, Benin, Poland, Cameroon, Kenya, Nepal, Namibia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico, Afghanistan, and the Philippines."We have a lot to do in China and that makes us feel that it is necessary to learn Chinese. Not only have we learnt the Chinese language, we have also made friends with the dedicated teachers and volunteer students," said Tadeusz Chomicki, Polish Ambassador to China.During the 17-weeks of classes, the foreign diplomats learned how to greet others, shop and ask time in Chinese. They also had classes on Chinese culture, experienced the Peking opera, paper cutting, Chinese calligraphy, and shadow boxing."They were always keeping a very high spirit to learn in all weather," said Xu Lin, director-general of Hanban. URUMQI, June 14 (Xinhua) -- China is diversifying its methods of importing energy from neighbor countries in central Asia as a train carrying 45 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Kazakhstan reached the country's inland port of Alataw Pass on Monday in the northwest Xinjiang region.It also marked the first time China imported energy from central Asia using railroads, rather than pipelines, since the founding of new China back in 1949."Central Asia is rich in oil and gas. China's state-owned oil giant CNPC has made large investments in recent years to purchase and explore resources in the region," said Gao Hongbo, general manager of a privately-run logistics and financial services company based in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region."Oil and gas could be transported through pipelines but the liquefied gas, obtained as a by-product from the refining of petroleum, could not be effectively transported due to the product's nature, causing huge waste," Gao said.Gao said the only option is to import the liquefied gas using railways, given current circumstances.But China's railways use the standard gauge (distance between rails at 1,435 mm), which is different from its Central-Asian neighbors' broad rail gauge (distance above 1,435 mm), and special lines need first to be built for the mass importing of LPG.Gao said his company has so far spent 300 million yuan (44 million U.S. dollars) in building nine broad-gauge rails and six standard gauge rails in Alataw Pass. These lines are expected to import 50,000 tonnes of LPG this year.The company plans a total of 21 lines to be built, and the annual capacity of these lines is expected to reach 200,000 tonnes of LPG during the next three years.These lines, when completed, will also be used to import 500,000 tonnes of oil each year and 2.5 million tonnes of commodities and mineral resources from central Asia.

BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health issued a circular Wednesday advising the nation's medical facilities to gear up for a rise in the number of people suffering from heat-stroke and other heat related ailments given the recent hot temperatures.The number of people suffering from heat-stroke and related disorders has risen sharply over the last few days, reads the circular without giving specific figures.Beijing-based Chaoyang hospital reported a significant increase of cases showing heat-induced symptoms such as dizziness, according to the Health News, the health ministry-run newspaper.The hospital has 450 such cases in emergency care each day now, compared to 360 cases just a few days ago.The ministry ordered hospitals across the nation to make sure people suffering from heat stroke get timely and proper treatment.Beijing reported an average temperature of 40.3 degrees Celsius at 4 p.m. Monday, the highest temperature in the first 10 days of July in 50 years.The capital city cooled a little bit Wednesday, and rains are expected for China eastern regions starting Thursday, offering some respite.

QINGDAO, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The spread of green algae has quickened as the temperature rises in Qingdao City of east China's Shandong Province.The area covered by green algae surged by 60 sq. km on Tuesday to 460 sq. km, according to the latest monitoring figure by the North China Sea Branch of the State Oceanic Administration released Wednesday.The surge is three times as fast as the average increase over the past four days, which was from 380 to 400 sq. km."It's getting hotter and hotter in Qingdao these days, and the green algae grows faster and faster," said Wang Zhigang, a local resident who swims in the sea every day.Sixteen to 20 degrees Celsius were the most favorable sea temperature range for growth of the algae, said Pang Shaojun, a researcher from the Institute of Oceanology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.The air temperature in Qingdao has risen by one degree Celsius per day on average over the past five days, reaching 27 degree Celsius Wednesday, according to the city's meteorological bureau."The sea temperature has risen to 20 degrees Celsius today, and the algae will keep growing if the temperature keeps rising," Pang said.The weather report said there would be a heavy rain in Qingdao, which would lower the air temperature to 25 degrees Celsius in the next three days, which meant the sea temperature would remain in the best range for the continued spreading of the green algae.Over 6,000 people, including cleaning workers and sea police, were deployed to clean the green algae as its continuing spread might affect the local fishery and tourism industries, said Ding Shugen from the Qingdao Committee of Municipal and Rural Construction.
