WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has welcomed Poland's president to the White House, and sending more U.S. troops to Poland to bolster NATO's eastern flank against Russian aggression is at the top of their agenda.Even before Andrzej Duda arrived, the U.S. ambassador to Poland said the U.S. will send another 1,000 troops to Poland — over and above the 1,000 declared last year.But the troops might not necessarily be transferred from Germany, where Trump is planning to withdraw about 10,000 U.S. troops.This is Duda’s third visit to Washington since Trump took office and the first head of state visit at the White House since the pandemic began.Trump and Duda are expected to hold a joint press conference at about 3:30 p.m. ET at the White House. Washington Capitals forward Devante Smith-Pelly was allegedly on the receiving end of taunts from fans in Chicago's United Center, forcing security to remove several of those responsible for the chants. After Smith-Pelly was penalized for fighting with the Blackhawks' Connor Murphy, he could be seen tapping his stick on the glass of the penalty box and confronting a group of fans. According to the Washington Post, one of the penalty box officials contacted arena security to have the fans removed. Smith-Pelly said the fans chanted "basketball, basketball, basketball" at Smith-Pelly. Smith-Pelly, a 25-year-old Canadian, is one of roughly two dozen black players currently in the NHL. "I just heard some chanting, some racially charged chanting I guess, and you could tell by my reaction, I got pretty upset," Smith-Pelly said on Sunday. "What was said this time around crossed the line."Smith-Pelly said this is not the first time an incident like this has happened. "It has happened in hockey before, it has happened to people we personally know, (my father and I) have had this conversation before," Smith-Pelly said. "A few ignorant people being idiots, that's it." NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman issued a statement on Sunday supporting the decision to eject the fans. "The National Hockey League condemns this unacceptable and reprehensible behavior," Bettman said. "The League fully supports the actions taken by the United Center and the Blackhawks to eject the offenders and would expect the same response to any similarly unacceptable behavior at any of our arenas."While this incident was isolated in nature, no player, coach, official or fan should ever have to endure such abuse at one of our games. WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says Vice President Mike Pence’s airplane struck a bird upon takeoff from a New Hampshire airport, causing the pilot to return to the airport out of caution. Pence was returning to Washington from a campaign event Tuesday at an airport hangar in nearby Gilford. When Air Force Two took off from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, it struck a bird. WASHINGTON (AP) — The George Washington University history professor who confessed to posing as a Black woman for her entire career has resigned. The university announced on Twitter that Jessica Krug, "has resigned her position, effective immediately." Washington state will require people to wear facial coverings in public settings, under a statewide public health order announced by Gov. Jay Inslee in response to ongoing COVID-related health concerns.The order, issued by Secretary of Health John Wiesman, takes effect Friday. The order requires face coverings when people are indoor in a public area, and outdoors in a public area when six feet of physical distancing can’t be maintained.Washington joins several other states that already have statewide mask orders in place, including California, which issued its order last week.A spokesman for Inslee said that violation of the statewide mask order is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail and up to a ,000 fine.
