More than 20 states have set records in daily reported cases of COVID-19 in recent days, prompting concern that another surge in deaths and hospitalizations linked to the virus could be on the way.According to information from Johns Hopkins University, 22 states across the country — particularly in the Upper Midwest or Great Plains region — are seeing record increases in new COVID-19 cases. (KGTV) - The National City City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday night to introduce a new ordinance that aims to close a loophole in a state law that prohibits the retail sale of cats, dogs and rabbits.Enacted on January 1, 2019, the new state law prohibits stores from selling animals unless they come from shelters or non-profit rescues. However, some pet stores have continued to sell what appear to be purebred and designer mix puppies that come from a small group of newly formed rescue organizations.One of those groups is called Bark Adoptions, based in Menifee. A 10News investigation found Bark Adoptions had been importing puppies from another supposed rescue in Iowa that had ties to commercial breeders.At National City Puppies, one of the two remaining pet stores in the city, signs on the dog cages in May showed they came from Bark Adoptions.The manager of National City Puppies, David Salinas, said he did not know where the dogs at his store came from beyond the listed rescues. But he defended his store in front of the city council, saying it comes down to consumer choice.“It’s the American way to have the freedom to choose where to buy a puppy,” said Salinas.As written now, the new ordinance says “a pet shop or retail pet store or its operator shall not sell, deliver, offer for sale, barter, auction or otherwise dispose of a cat, dog or rabbit.”There are exceptions, however, that would allow pet stores to offer “a cat, dog or rabbit owned by an animal shelter or animal rescue organization for purposes of adoption” but only if “the pet shop does not receive any fee from the adoption and does not have any monetary or ownership interest” in the animals. The ordinance still has to come back to the city council for a second reading and adoption before it goes into effect. 1835

I’m OK - I’m getting OK with that.”Yakubov says her New Jersey district started the school year remotely, which meant the high school math teacher had to figure out how to connect with her students virtually.“It would be so nice if I could walk around the classroom with my students, engage them, check in, have conversations about how they’re doing also have personal conversations with my students,” Yakubov said.Yakubov and her district use Microsoft Teams. She teaches algebra 1 and geometry through the platform, and says she's really looking forward to some new features within Teams. She views it as another tool in her toolbox.Microsoft's education director Mark Sparvell says the roll out includes "praise badges," which are cute, colorful and eye-catching stickers for teachers to "hand out" to their students.“What these tools do is they provide an avenue even when we’re between glass to allow young people to be seen, heard and know they matter,” says Sparvell.Things like reflections and emotional check-ins are also new, and they come at a time when students everywhere are more stressed and anxious than ever.“How is a student feeling, how is my class feeling, how is my school feeling, how is my district feeling,” Sparvell said.Years of research and development led them to this point, says Sparvell. He says these sorts of social and emotional connections are critical for every student.“They’re tied directly to academic outcomes, to positive life outcomes, to mental health and physical health and they’re tied to potential to be employed and remain employed in the future,” Sparvell said.Yakubov says she hopes it'll force her high schoolers to engage, as teens often have a tendency to withdraw.“I am here for them,” Yakubov said. “I want them to succeed and it’s really tough.
