CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - One man is dead after a fight erupted at a South Bay gas station Monday night.Police said two men began arguing outside the AM/PM gas station at 765 E Street just after 8 p.m. Police responded to find one man unresponsive on the ground. The victim was taken to Scripps Hospital in Chula Vista, where he was pronounced dead.Chula Vista police reviewed surveillance footage from the gas station, which showed the victim sitting on a curb asking customers for money at the gas station. The suspect, later identified as 64-year-old Carl Keele, walked up and was confronted by the victim, according to police. The two men appeared to argue before the victim stood up and attempted to punch Keele. The two began to throw punches and kicks at one another until the victim collapsed. Keele then walked off camera and left the scene, police said.Police said the victim could be seen breathing while laying on the ground. Witnesses told police they thought the victim was joking around after he fell.Police later located Keele and took him into custody. Keele told officers the victim asked him for as he approached the AM/PM. He told him no and the victim called him a racial slur, according to Keele.Keele said he told others not to give the victim money and the man became angry and started swinging at him. Police said Keele defended himself by throwing punches in return until the victim collapsed.Police said based on witness statements and Keele's statement, they do not see any grounds to charge Keele. The victim's name is not being released pending family notification.CVPD is still investigating the incident. CINCINNATI -- Kyle Jacob Plush called 911 twice hours before he was found dead inside his car at Seven Hills School. Plush, 16, first called 911 at 3:16 p.m. Tuesday. He cried for help and repeatedly told the operator he could not hear what she was saying.“I can’t hear you … I need help, I’m gonna die here,” Plush said. The first unit, with two Cincinnati officers, was dispatched to respond at 3:23 p.m. They arrived minutes later, reported not seeing anything and attempted to call Plush’s phone. There was no answer. A Hamilton County sheriff's deputy checked the area again at 3:48 p.m. to no avail. At some point, Plush called 911 a second time. It is not clear the exact time he made this second call."This is not a joke," he said. "I am trapped inside a gold Honda Odyssey van in the parking lot of Seven Hills ... Send officers immediately. I'm almost dead."A passerby called police at 8:56 p.m., and dispatch requested police and ambulance minutes later. Nick Francis, director of Experiential Learning at Seven Hills School, said in a 911 call a security guard contacted him and told him to call 911 because they found a kid in his car. Francis told the dispatcher he wasn’t at the school, but they had been “missing a kid.”“I got a call from a security guy there because we were trying to find this kid, and he just all of a sudden called me, 'Nick we found him. Call 911, he's in his car,’” Francis told the dispatcher.Around 9 p.m., according to police, a family member discovered Plush dead inside his 2002 Honda Odyssey -- a death Hamilton County Coroner Lakshmi Sammarco would rule accidental "asphyxia caused by chest compression."Something -- neither Sammarco nor Lt. Steve Saunders indicated what -- had pressed so hard against Plush's chest that he suffocated. Here's a timeline of what unfolded: 1880
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — The Sweetwater Union High School District will allow almost 300 employees to retire early, to balance a budget tens of millions of dollars in the red. "It was in our best interest to work with the district,” President Gene Chavira of the Sweetwater Education Association said. The teachers’ union president said this is part of the district’s "Budget Solutions Plan." They first added two furlough days to all staff this school year. In November, the Board of Trustees also agreed to offer employees who are 50 years or older and have worked for the district for at least 10 years, the option to resign then retire from the district. Eligible staff members were given two options for bonuses: Leave at the end of the year (December 2018) to receive 85 percent of their annual salary, spread over a given number of years; or leave at the end of the school year (June 2019) to receive 60 percent of their annual salary, spread over a given number of years. At the last union election, Chavira said 87 percent of the union members voted for the district’s plan.By Wednesday’s deadline, nearly 300 employees signed up for the early retirement package. One hundred forty-four are teachers, and the rest are either school staff or management. Of the 144 teachers, 94 of them have chosen to leave in December 2018. While some voiced the concern of teachers leaving in the middle of the school year, Chavira said the district employs many capable teachers who are qualified.“If one your teachers was the teacher that left, then someone else is going to take it. And in most cases, it's someone that's already there, who will assume those classes,” Chavira said. While the hope is the change from a seasoned to a potentially less-experienced teacher in the middle of the school year will not affect student success, the district said the finances made sense. According to the current salary schedule, veteran teachers get paid as much as 8,000 a year, compared to new hires at ,000. "In the long run, it's a savings,” Chavira said. Sweetwater Union High School District spokesman Manny Rubio said with this early retirement plan in place, the district will see significant cost-savings. Because of that, there will be no layoffs for current new teachers. 2288
