SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The former Imperial Beach man convicted of molesting and strangling two young boys in 1993 has died of coronavirus, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said. Scott Thomas Erskine, 57, was sentenced to death in San Diego County in 2004 for the first-degree murders of 9-year-old Jonathan Sellers and 13-year-old Charles Keever.The California Department of Corrections said Erskine died from complications due to the virus at an outside hospital. He was on death row at San Quentin. Both Sellers and Keever disappeared while on a bicycle ride near their South Bay homes. Erskine lured the victims to an igloo-shaped “fort” of brush before molesting and strangling them.In March of 2001, Erskine was serving a 70-year sentence for raping a San Diego woman when newly-tested DNA linked him to the murder of the boys.Erskine also pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder for the Florida slaying of 26-year-old Renee Baker. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surgeons at UC San Diego are using new technology that offers more options for patients who have complex thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. UC San Diego Health System is the first on the West Coast to use Dynamic Morphology Correction, a type of 3D imaging. It allows surgeons to compare scans taken before the procedure to real-time pictures during the surgery.Dr. Mahmoud Malas, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at UC San Diego, says this type of technology uses minimal iodine contrast which lessens the chance of kidney problems for 25 percent of patients dealing with aneurysms.The data from this technology helps surgeons across the country.Dr. Malas adds, " They create prediction models that helps future surgeons perform procedures more accurately." 795

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego is working to transform Little Italy into an outdoor dining experience. They're streamlining the process for shops and restaurants to serve more customers while promoting social distancing under a new outdoor dining and shopping proposal.Marla Encinas had to close her Little Italy clothing boutique, Valmare, for two months. "We tried to do online selling but its definitely not the same," said Encinas. But, for any business, fewer customers often means less revenue. The city of San Diego is trying to change that. On Thursday, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced a proposal to waive fees and fast-track the permit process to bring restaurants and shops outdoors. "They’ll be allowed to maximize outdoor space to allow physical distancing and expand the number of customers they can serve," said Faulconer. "I think its going to be really cool to be outside in the open air and be able to bring out our business," said Encinas. With approved permits, businesses can set up tables and chairs or racks of clothes and other items on sidewalks, streets, and parking lots. "I would love to bring out summer stuff because the weather is so nice, people are starting to slowly go out."Last Saturday, Little Italy had their first al-fresco dining event on India Street. By adding retail shops in the mix, more businesses will get a much-needed chance to bounce back from Covid-19. "It's going to be very fun," said Encinas. "You’re going to have a bunch of different vendors, it's going to be different than your typical shopping experience."Businesses can apply for the outdoor dining permits on the city's website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The attorney for Rebecca Zahau’s family spoke Friday about the San Diego County Sheriff Department’s new review of her death at the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado.Earlier in the day, Sheriff Bill Gore announced that investigators found no evidence that she “died at the hands of another”. The department will not reopen the case.Zahau’s body was found hanging a the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011. Her wrists and feet were bound. For years, there has been speculation about the nature of her death, which was originally determined to be a suicide.Zahau family attorney Keith Greer suggested Friday afternoon that the Sheriff’s investigators are corrupt. “It’s not a logical decision. There’s something here that’s motivating these folks to do the wrong thing,” he told 10News. “I don’t know how they look at themselves in the mirror,” he added. Greer said that a rational person would not look at the evidence and believe that Zahau’s death was a suicide. The Zahau family lives in Missouri and did not want to be involved in Friday’s briefing at the Sheriff’s Department. They did release a recent photo of Zahau’s gravesite, surrounded by snow and flowers.Greer said he and the family are disappointed in the Sheriff’s Department, especially after a jury recently ruled in the family’s favor during the civil case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Surveillance video captured the moment after a thief stole a woman's wallet inside a Midway District grocery store.According to San Diego Crime Stoppers, the theft happened on Sept. 23 inside the Ralph’s grocery store located at 3345 Sports Arena Blvd.While the 73-year-old female victim was in the freezer section, the man waited for the victim to open a freezer door and then approached her shopping cart. The suspect quickly removed the victim's wallet from her purse, which was placed at the top of the shopping cart.The victim was right next to the cart but was looking inside a freezer when the theft occurred.The suspected thief walked away without the victim realizing what had happened. The total loss of the wallet and cash inside it is over ,500.Investigators reviewed store surveillance footage, which showed the man following the victim throughout the store and appearing to target her.The suspected thief is described as a white male, approximately 5’10“ tall, 175 lbs., with tanned skin.
