CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A new event space in the South Bay is paying homage to San Diego’s industrial history. Called “Salt Drift Pointe” the owners say they wanted to honor the industrial history driven by the old salt ponds that helped move the region from farming to industry. Over the years, the South Bay city has changed dramatically. Switching gears from an agricultural hub to an industrial one. Now, another shift is underway. One aimed at helping the city bring in more tourists. Lemons, oranges and lots of celery once dominated the landscape of Chula Vista. But that all changed in 1911 when the city was officially incorporated as part of California. RELATED: New event venue honors South Bay historyAs World War II shook the globe, Chula Vista began to shift from away from agriculture, moving toward an industrial revolution, according to the South Bay Historical Society. Now, Chula Vista is trying to increase tourism with the development of the Bayfront. In June, the Port of San Diego approved the .1 billion development plan that would add a 1,600-room hotel and 400,000 square foot convention center. 1138

CINCINNATI -- Just days after calling for a national boycott of the Kroger Co., the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. brought his fight to the corporation's front porch. The Rainbow Push Coalition Local Steering Committee invited Jackson to Cincinnati as he continues his protest over Kroger closures in predominantly black neighborhoods. Kroger closed three unprofitable grocery stores in Memphis in February, mirroring its closure of a store in Cincinnati's Walnut Hills neighborhood last year. The company said its East McMillan Street location had lost millions of dollars over years."We wrote a letter to the leadership of Kroger, and they did not respond to us," Jackson said. "This is a pattern across the country. There are enough mouths to be fed and people to be served for Kroger to stay in the community. They may want to leave, but there are people who want to buy."Watch Jackson's full remarks in the video player below.  961

CHULA VISTA, Calif. Since voters approved commercial cannabis operations in 2018, we have been working to establish a quality program that attracts businesses like Grasshopper that are committed to running top-notch operations in our community.”Measure Q, an initiative approved by voters in 2018, allows for “commercial cannabis retail, delivery, testing, cultivation and manufacturing” in Chula Vista.Under Measure Q, the city said: “A total of 12 cannabis retail operations are allowed in the City of Chula Vista. Each council district may have a maximum of three retail locations to include two storefront locations or a combination of storefront and delivery operations, not to exceed three per council district.Grasshopper Delivery is Chula Vista owned and operated. Dedicated to sustainable green business practices, Grasshopper uses lows-emission vehicles for delivery and offers biodegradable packaged cannabis products at affordable prices.”Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, Grasshopper Delivery is operating by contactless delivery only.Grasshopper Delivery founding president Andres Camberos said, “We recognize the need for access to licensed legal cannabis in the City of Chula Vista and look forward to serving South County communities. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Those watching from the ground at Chula Vista High School were in awe as Navy parachutist made their way back to Earth. Those elsewhere in the South Bay were simply in awe, though unaware of the show. The sight of a fireball careening through the sky above Chula Vista Friday night sent nearby residents into confusion, lighting up social media. But it wasn't a UFO or secret government project. It was government related, though.US Navy Leap Frogs performed a demonstration jump for students and parents during Chula Vista's homecoming football game with Mar Vista High."Some people call it the fire in the sky. We make sure everyone knows, all the authorities know, but it's always a surprise for a lot of people," SBC Luke Howard-Vesci, with the Leap Frog team, said. "Once they figure out it was the Leap Frogs it's a lot of fun.""The ability to give the crowd a really unique experience every time is probably our greatest strength and the ability to also have a lot of outreach and be able to talk to a lot of different people is a great part of our job," Howard-Vesci added. 1125

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Chula Vista's sprawling University and Innovation District site was presented to California State University consultants this week as a possible location for a future campus.Eric Crockett, Chula Vista's economic development director, says consultants provided city, business, and education leaders with "a lot of feedback" during discussions about the region's possibilities."Everybody was very supportive, everyone knows there’s a need for higher education," Crockett said. "South Bay has a need for higher education."Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas added that the meeting showed "pretty significant movement" for the city's planned University and Innovation District, which includes more than 500 acres of availability for a campus."I think is the best argument in our favor is that we're in a bi-national region and that this is a huge economic driver in the State of California," Salas said. "If you want to enrich the California economy, building those educational ties is the best for the future."RELATED: Groundbreaking ceremony held for two projects along Chula Vista BayfrontPalm Desert, Stockton, Concord, and San Mateo County are also being considered for a future CSU site.Mike Uhlenkamp, senior director of public affairs for CSU, cautioned that even though cities are being considered, it's not a guarantee that a campus gets built anywhere. Right now, he says the university system is "kicking the tires" with a feasibility study. Uhlenkamp added that building a campus could cost millions of dollars, so it's a tough argument to start.Which is where Chula Vista's argument looked to make an impact, drawing inspiration from another CSU project: San Diego State Mission Valley.Crockett said that a potential CSU campus in Chula Vista could mix in commercial and residential uses to help with funding.RELATED: SeaWorld's Sesame Place theme park begins construction in Chula Vista"It’s nice with what SDSU has done, it helps. The state already understands that model," Crockett said. "It’s almost the same for-profit model."City officials have already envisioned the district would include a commercial and residential component. The now city-owned Olympic training center, adjacent to the site, added to the appeal for any collegiate athletics. Chula Vista laid all of those qualities on the table."We’re trying not to create a drain on the state or take money from other universities," Crockett said. "When we did our planning document, it also contains for-profit uses."In addition to Chula Vista's land availability, the area is home to Southwestern College and situated near several other community colleges, including San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, Cuyamaca College, and Grossmont College.Salas added that the city has continued talks with San Marcos-based Saint Katherine College for 10-acres of the site. Salas said that university could potentially start off the site's development and work alongside the CSU development, adding more appeal for CSU.Consultants will continue to meet with leaders from each community to learn how a potential campus could best serve the state's higher education needs. Those meetings will consider the area's relationship with community colleges, benefit to the region, land availability, and potential enrollment.Consultants developing the feasibility study are working on behalf of CSU to keep the process objective, Uhlenkamp says. Crockett said the feasibility study should be finalized by July 1. 3515
