SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University astronomers played a role in the recent discovery of a third planet within the Kepler-47 planetary system.A team of researchers, led by astronomers from SDSU, discovered a new Neptune-size planet orbiting the system's two suns between two previously discovered planets.The planet, named Kepler-47d, was discovered using a method called, "transit method," according to to university. The method measures a level of brightness to help detect masses. "If the orbital plane of the planet is aligned edge-on as seen from Earth, the planet can pass in front of the host stars, leading to a measurable decrease in the observed brightness," a release from the school describes.RELATED: Researchers share photo of a black hole — the first ever in historyPreviously, the planet's signal was too weak to detect.“We saw a hint of a third planet back in 2012, but with only one transit we needed more data to be sure,” SDSU astronomer Jerome Orosz, the paper’s lead author, said in the release. “With an additional transit, the planet’s orbital period could be determined, and we were then able to uncover more transits that were hidden in the noise in the earlier data.”Kepler-47d is about seven times the size of Earth and takes 87 days to orbit around its suns.“We certainly didn’t expect it to be the largest planet in the system. This was almost shocking,” said William Welsh, SDSU astronomer and the study’s co-author.The entire Kepler-47 system itself is interesting as well. With two suns, it's the only known multi-planet circumbinary system. The system is extremely compact and would fit inside the orbit of Earth. It's located about 3340 light-years away in the direction of constellation Cygnus. 1748

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- School grades have been a sensitive topic between parents and their kids for as long most can probably remember.Whether you agree with a report card or not – it's used as a sign of academic performance or to highlight areas that may need improvement.With school back in session, most from a distance, teachers across California are trying to figure out how to properly measure students' learning.Back in March, when stay at home orders were announced, some school districts shifted from the traditional A to F system to credit/no credit grading."Many of them did look to what the universities were asking and what would be in the best interest of students in that before they made a decision," said Dina Wilson, division director at the Los Angeles County Office of EducationThat was five months ago and a temporary measure.A new school year is underway, and each district's current approach to grading could have an impact on students' future and finances."We want to make sure we're doing right by our kids," said San Diego County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gothold. "We don't want our kids to be at a disadvantage when they start to apply for colleges."Gothold has a strong opinion on how grading should be handled this school year."Letter grades need to be the default practice," he said.The San Diego County Office of Education provides its recommendations, but they don't have to be implemented by local districts.Gothold said while the education system needs to figure out a way to hold students harmless for learning challenges, moving away from a traditional grading system could have long-term impacts."We are putting our kids at a disadvantage if they're applying for schools nationally," he said. "Not every college, not every institution is even accepting pass/fail or credit/no credit. We've seen this in some of the art schools across the country where kids have applied and have been told they aren't going to recognize those grades."There's also the issue of grant money and scholarships.Gothold said credit/no credit had an impact on some student's finances."Kids that needed a 3.0 to qualify for Cal Grant, for those that were on track to get As and Bs to boost their GPA the second semester of their senior year, some were shut out and not eligible for that funding that they so desperately needed and deserved because of pass-fail credit/no credit," he said.Reporter Adam Racusin asked a handful of the state's largest schools what type of grading system they're using this academic year. All who responded said they were using a traditional A through F system.Back in March, the University of California implemented temporary measures which relax undergraduate admissions requirements for students looking to enroll at UC for fall 2020 and future years as applicable. According to the UC system, these measures will help mitigate some of the extraordinary challenges students and their families face in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.A spokesperson for the California State University said they relaxed some undergraduate admissions standards for both newly admitted students and prospective students to account for changes in grading and administration of standardized tests. 3238

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting in September, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar will become a "living lab" for brand new technology, helping shape how tech can benefit our military and cities in the future.The base is one of 12 Naval X "Tech Bridges" in the nation, partnering the Marine Corps, Navy, academia, and private businesses to test and develop leading-edge tech.To prepare the base, Verizon installed a brand new 5G network in July, making the base the first in the nation with this capability.Lt. Col. Brandon Newell, Director of Naval X Southern California Tech Bridge, said Miramar was ideal because of its location, size, and layout."We’ve been building toward this for three years," Lt. Col. Newell said.One of the four projects that will be happening this fall is creating a "digital fortress." Lt. Col. Newell said that means self-learning technology will replace traditional fences and enhance gate security.He painted a picture of what it would look like with extra tech at MCAS Miramar's gate. "[A Marine] is scrutinizing your ID and your face the moment they have with you before they allow you on. While you're cued up in the line waiting, the power of computer vision and machine learning could help us assist in knowing who’s new to the base, who hasn’t come with that vehicle before," Lt. Col. Newell said.Perimeter surveillance will get a boost from Orange County-based defense tech startup, Anduril.The company created Sentry Towers, a compact, self-powered, learning surveillance tool already set up at MCAS Yuma.They plan to set up three towers at MCAS Miramar along the perimeter in the next two to three weeks. The towers will monitor the landscape through video and sensors that map the area."It learns the tipping factors of what is something of interest and what is something not of interest in locations where we don’t have a lot of visibility sometimes," Lt. Col. Newell said.This tech gives Marines physical space and therefore protection during the pandemic, "allows Marines and law enforcement officials to not be in the operations center and be out doing other mission-essential requirements," Declan Lynch, head of strategy and growth, Force Protection, at Anduril said.Lynch said the tech tested at Miramar will translate to protect our service members on the battlefield."I'm really excited about taking the same technology and working with war-fighters in combat and contested environments ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Southern California home sales are seeing a significant drop, according to a new report by CoreLogic. In San Diego County, home sales are down more than eight percent year-over-year. Despite a dip in sales, home prices rose 2.6 percent from February of 2018 to February of 2019.The median home price in February was 9,000, CoreLogic reports. RELATED: San Diego among worst cities in U.S. for first-time homebuyersThe recently-released data shows that home sales are cooling by double digits, dropping by more than 11 percent year-over-year in Southern California. The report points out that total SoCal home sales in February were the lowest since February of 2008, when only 10,777 homes were sold. According to the report, sales have fallen on a year-over-year basis for the last seven consecutive months.
