The military is investigating why an aging cargo plane making its final military flight nosedived into a Georgia highway on Wednesday, killing all nine people on board.The Puerto Rico Air National Guard WC-130 was flying from Savannah, Georgia, to Tucson, Arizona, where it was to be decommissioned. The plane involved in Wednesday's crash was at least 50 years old, according to an official familiar with the aircraft."Nine crew members died in the accident, but until their families and relatives are notified, we cannot give their names," said Brigadier General Isabelo Rivera, the assistant general of Puerto Rico. 626

The Lockport City School District thinks it could soon be a national model for school security. Superintendent Michelle Bradley said the district is installing 300 new security cameras loaded with a new high tech software. The software recognizes people who pose a threat, like terminated employees, sex offenders, suspended students, or someone carrying a gun. Then, it alerts police or school leaders. “It will add another layer of security to what we already have,” Bradley said. It will be the first security system of its kind in any public school in the United States. It will be installed in all 10 buildings owned by Lockport School District. Tony Olivo with Corporate Screening & Investigative Group, LLC is working with Canadian owned SN Technologies to get th\e high-tech system into more buildings in western New York.“We’ve actually been looking to deplore this type of technology in hospitals, health care organizations, as well as places like malls,” Olivo said. The new system is just part of the changes Lockport Public Schools have made to security recently. The school also just installed new doors and a sign-in system, which cost close to million dollars.The projects are being funded by the Smart School Bond Act of 2014 — a referendum allowing the state to give schools money for safety following the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. More than 200 school across New York are on the waiting list for approval for funds from the act. The recognition system will be installed in Lockport schools over the summer. The Pennsylvania Department of Health is encouraging people who were at President Donald Trump’s campaign rally at Harrisburg International Airport on Saturday to get tested if they are feeling sick.Trump announced earlier Friday that he and the first lady have tested positive for the coronavirus.The department is asking people to download the COVID Alert PA phone app if they do test positive to anonymously alert people they may have come in contact with.Thousands attended the outdoor rally, held hours after the president introduced his Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, from the Rose Garden at the White House. The great outdoors can be a great escape physically and emotionally.For a select group of first responders, outdoor adventures can provoke feelings that they desperately need while also providing peace of mind during this pandemic and political season.“My mind is actually blank and relaxed for once because I don’t think I’ve had this since everything has started,” said a pharmacist attending Hero Recharge, free outdoor adventures provided by the nonprofit group First Descents.This program started 20 years ago when the group’s founder took his aunt, who was diagnosed with cancer, out kayaking. Her time on the river was an important part on her recovery process.Since then, First Descents has grown to an international movement with major sponsors such as the Dunkin' Joy in Childhood Foundation, VF Foundation, Basepoint Foundation, and Samberg Family Foundation.Fist Descents is serving those suffering from cancer and multiple sclerosis through activities like surfing, kayaking and rock climbing. This year, they’re now helping health care workers impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.Nurse practitioner Marybeth Spinos has volunteered with the First Descents for the past several years and says the camaraderie outside of the workplace can help health care workers step away from their stresses and fears about being on the front lines.“What’s so beautiful about these opportunities is that you can be with people who really get it,” Spinos said.That includes people like emergency room nurse Emily Lanier, who’s disappointed with the handling of the crisis, especially with a recent surge in new COVID cases nationwide.“We’ve already been through this and now we know a lot more and we’re still going through it,” she said. “We just don’t know when this is going to end and so it’s kind of hard to picture any kind of future.”Being out of the hospital and in nature does help these health care workers heal physically and emotionally.“Just being out here, away from it all, just kind of puts everything out of my mind,” said pharmacist Troy Chunkapura.He says sharing similar environmental experiences with others in the medical community gives him hope.“We’re in this together,” Chunkapura said. “There is a light at the end of the tunnel and we’re going to get through this.” 2292
