SAN DIEGO -- A woman is on high alert after she says a six-foot-long rattlesnake nearly attacked her dog Friday.Willow, 20, says she let her small dog out just before 10 a.m. Friday in San Diego.According to the 20-year-old, the dog started running around when Willow noticed a snake. She quickly grabbed the dog and started running back inside.Firefighters responded and found the massive red diamond rattlesnake cozying up net to some rocks near a fence line.A firefighter was able to safely remove the snake with tongs. Crews say this rattlesnake is the largest they’ve ever seen.After being fed and taken care of by a 3rd party, the snake will be released into the wild. 697

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - UC San Diego is a pilot school for an exposure notification system that alerts users if they’ve come in contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. It’s a partnership with the state of California and officially launched on campus Thursday.The system uses smartphone technology to anonymously tell people they may have been exposed. It does not track locations and is completely anonymous. It starts working when a person downloads the system on their phone and enables notifications. It then records proximity to other devices that also have the program downloaded. If two phones come in contact with each other for more than about 15 minutes and are closer than around six feet, it takes note of that. Then, if a person tests positive later, they can go in the program and click a button saying they tested positive, and their system sifts through all the devices that previously had extended exposure, sending those users alerts about the possible exposure.Doctor Christopher Longhurst, Chief Information Officer and Associate Chief Medical Officer for UCSD Health said the biggest factor that will impact effectiveness is the number of users.“We’d like to see 75% of that community or more adopting. Modeling done by Oxford and other universities has shown that if we can get over 50% adoption in a population, you can actually help to end outbreaks,” said Doctor Longhurst.As of Friday, about one day into the official launch, the school said 7,985 people had signed up. San Diego (KGTV)- As Westin Hotel workers fight for better wages, local business owners are fighting to keep business.Hotel workers have been on strike for the past few weeks. Business owners say customers are now avoiding the area and its costing them money.Joey Aiello owns a shoe shine stand that sits outside of The Westin Hotel. He says he’s seen fewer customers this month because of the strike. “People don’t think its a big business but it supports my family,” says Aiello.He says since the workers hit the picket line, he’s lost 00 in business. “The first week they were here I made less than 0 a day. We have to make 0 a day to stay a float.” Other business also say they are concerned about the noise.The San Diego Police Department says they have received six complaints since October 9th. A spokesperson with Marriott International sent us this statement that says in part:“We are disappointed with some of the tactics the union has deployed including the noise levels. We continue to work with local police to address these issues and we are grateful to our guests for their patience during this time.”The Unite Here Union President, Bridgette Browning, says employees are now in negotiations with the hotel. She also sent us a statement that says:“While we are sympathetic to neighboring businesses - we believe the Marriott has the power to fix this strike and the businesses should be demanding that Marriott do the right thing. The workers are not to blame for the low standards that Marriott has created at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp. The workers are prepared to settle as soon as Marriott decides to do the right thing and sign a contract that provides living wages.”For business owner Joey Aiello, he says he won’t be able to make back the money he’s lost. “I just have to work harder and keep everything a float the best I can.” 1869

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A group of San Diegans gathered at Balboa Park to honor the 22 lives lost in the El Paso shooting. A group of San Diegans organized the event held at the park next to Centro Cultural de la Raza, hoping to unite the city and advocate change."It hurts, it's going to take a while, we're not going to forget," Pat Palma said. She has friends and family in Texas and feared for their safety when the shots rang out August 3rd."Tried to locate everybody, it was hard, I finally did. Sunday I was just numb," she said."That person did not go to Walmart asking if you're a Democrat or a Republican or a Trump supporter or not. He went there to shoot brown people," Organizer Jessica Yanez Perez said.The victims range in age from 82-2-years-old.At the vigil, they held a prayer asking for support for the families experiencing grief, lit candles for those lost and had speakers who preached involvement to create change."This is something that touched close to home for a lot of us," Yanez Perez said El Paso and San Diego are the same city. She explained both cities are made up of the same people, "people of Mexican ethnicity, of immigrants, of people who cross the border to work."The organizers hope the crowd touched by the senseless killing can show unity, through more than the color of their skin, "what happens here, what can we do here, to prevent something like that and I think the biggest thing is coming together as a community reminding each other we are one we are San Diego." 1522

San Diego (KGTV)- Thousands of students around the world walked out of their classrooms this morning and are taking a stand to help end climate change. Its a part of the “Youth Strike 4 Climate.” Hundreds of students from High Tech High School joined the international fight. Teens say they want a healthy environment for years to come. “This is everyone’s fight, everyone as a community. It's so important that we do something now,” says student Hailey Baiz. The teems say the movement is to let government leaders know that something needs to be done to curb global warming and cut gas emissions. Students at High Tech High say they’ve already reduced their carbon footprint and they want adults to follow their lead. “It is affecting all of us, and I feel that if we go to city hall, we’ll make our voices be heard,” says Frida Sanchez. As part of the international protest, teens are hoping to grab the attention of leaders at their local city halls. 962
