SHANGHAI, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai General Motors (SGM) is contacting the owners of 2,065 Captive jeeps to recall the vehicles for repair due to risk of steering malfunction, the company said on Friday.The defected vehicles were manufactured by GM Daewoo Auto in the Republic of Korea between Sept. 18, 2007 and Dec. 31, 2008, said a spokesman with SGM.China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) released a bulletin on Friday, approving SGM's application for the recall.SGM had received no customer reports on the defect, the spokesman said.GAQSIQ has stopped the importation of GM Daewoo Auto's Captive jeeps, according to the bulletin.
BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland announced Sunday it would extend anti-dumping measures by five years on imports of phenol from Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United States and Taiwan.The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement posted on its website that it decided to review the measures a year ago in response to applications from domestic phenol companies.According to the MOC, if anti-dumping measures were discontinued, dumping of phenol might continue and would hurt the domestic industry again.However, the MOC did not provide further information concerning what the measures were and when they would take effect.Phenol is a chemical compound used in the production of some medicines, plastics, pesticides and synthetic resins.

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- China's export is witnessing a steady recovery as shown by February figures, but uncertainties in the external market could still hamper the revival, political advisors said here Thursday.China's exports grew for the third straight month in February, up 45.7 percent year on year to 94.52 billion U.S. dollars, the General Administration of Customs announced Wednesday.The dramatic increase was a result of a lower comparison basis last year, said Ju Yalian, a member of the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and also a senior foreign trade official in the eastern Zhejiang Province, one of the country's key export regions."But compared with figures in the corresponding period in 2008, when China's foreign trade was yet to be hit by the global financial crisis, we could still see a remarkable increase," she said on the sidelines of the ongoing annual session of the CPPCC National Committee, the top political advisory body.China's exports rose 8.2 percent in February from two years ago while imports were up 9.8 percent.The increase indicated the country's continued economic recovery, and a trend of recovery in foreign trade, she said.However, Ju warned that the recovery in export could bring pressure of yuan appreciation and possible trade disputes.Liang Yaowen, head of the Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of Guangdong, China's southern export powerhouse, also said that the condition is not "so optimistic", noting that China's foreign trade in February dropped 11.5 percent month on month.Commerce Minister Chen Deming said Saturday China's exports may need two or three years to return to the pre-crisis level, as "global recovery is still haunted by uncertainties.""Now it is still too early to say exports will see full-year growth this year," he said on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature.
BEIJING, Feb. 22 -- The Chinese central government plans to implement a new policy in the first half of this year to encourage auto industry consolidation and further the development of Chinese-brand passenger vehicles, an official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said at a recent news conference.According to sources with knowledge of the new policy, it intends that Chinese-brand passenger vehicles will comprise at least half of vehicle sales by 2015 and sedans made by entirely domestic automakers will have about 40 percent of the nation's car market.Statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) show that 4.58 million Chinese-brand passenger vehicles were sold last year, some 44.3 percent of the total. Through an acquisition deal with Aviation Industry Corp last year, Chang'an Auto closed the biggest asset deal between State-owned auto enterprisesSales of domestic sedans hit 2.22 million units, almost 30 percent of the segment.The new policy will also focus on accelerating consolidation between automakers and could lead to a new round of reshuffling, industry insiders said.China became the world's largest auto producer and market last year with both production and sales surpassing 13.5 million vehicles due in part to government incentives.There are now more than 130 carmakers across the country, but most of them are small enterprises with annual production and sales of fewer than 10,000 units.Only five had sales of more than 1 million units last year as the country's top 10 carmakers moved a total of 11.89 million vehicles to account for 87 percent of overall sales, according to market data.Consolidation movesLast year, Chang'an Motor Corp acquired two minivan makers - Hafei and Changhe - as well as engine producer Dong'an Auto from the Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC), marking the biggest asset deal ever between State-owned auto companies.Chang'an is the fourth-largest motor group in China and the local partner of US carmaker Ford Motor and Japan's Mazda and Suzuki. Industry analysts generally expect a rebound in car shipments this year as the foreign markets begin to recover.Despite the poor export performance, Chinese companies were aggressive in acquiring overseas assets in 2009.Homegrown carmaker Geely's bid for Swedish luxury brand Volvo received a lot of media exposure in 2009. MOSCOW, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- An assembly line of Chinese automaker Geely was officially launched in Russia's Caucasus republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, local media reported Saturday. Russian car company Derways has started body welding and other assembling work of Geely-brand vehicles on Friday, according to Russian state TV channel Russia-24. Some 1,100 units were expected to be produced by the end of February, the first batch of which will be delivered to Moscow by Jan. 20. The annual production of Geely will be no lower than 12,000 units. Besides Geely, Derways was also scheduled to manufacture for other Chinese brands such as Li Fan, Great Wall Motors, Chery and Haima. The total annual output of the Derways company was estimated to reach 100,000 units. Local residents could enjoy price discounts when purchasing these cars, according to the company, which also foresees a great demand of Chinese vehicles on Russian market.
