A Phoenix boy is in the hospital after his mother's boyfriend allegedly broke his bones and pulled out his hair. Phoenix police report that on Wednesday, they arrested 25-year-old Steven Darrell Nelson at his home near 7th Street and Union Hills Drive. Three weeks earlier, a 4-year-old boy who also lives at Nelson's home was taken to the hospital with multiple life-threatening injuries. Pediatricians at Phoenix Children’s Hospital report that the child had a broken arm, broken leg, lacerated liver, bowel perforation, "multiple areas of hair loss from hair being pulled out by the roots," and bruising throughout his body.The boy has been hospitalized for the past three weeks, and allegedly told police, "Steven hurt me." Upon his arrest, Nelson reportedly told police that they were playing when the injuries occurred, and, "he hoped that one day they could be friends."  926

A new study suggests misguided antibodies created as a response when someone is infected with the coronavirus could be the cause behind both more severe COVID-19 symptoms and those who report having symptoms for months after initially recovering.Researchers at Yale University found that COVID-19 patients they studied had high levels of antibodies that had turned on them; these wayward antibodies blocked antiviral defenses, wiped out helpful immune cells and attacked the body in several areas including the brain, blood vessels, liver and gastrointestinal tract.“Covid-19 patients make autoantibodies that actually interfere with immune responses against the virus,” Aaron Ring, an immunobiologist at Yale and senior author on the study, told The Guardian.Autoantibodies are antibodies that attack the body’s own proteins by mistake and disrupt their normal functions.“We certainly believe that these autoantibodies are harmful to patients with Covid-19,” said Ring. He added that the harmful effects of these autoantibodies could continue well after the initial infection has been overcome. He said antibodies can last for a long time, and if they are misguided in their attacks, the effects of their attacks on the body could also last a while.The study, which has yet to be peer reviewed and formally published, looked at antibodies from 194 COVID-19 patients and hospital workers with a range of symptoms and severity of symptoms.Other conditions, like lupus, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, are also made worse by the immune system malfunctioning and attacking the body. 1600

A month after the deadliest mass shooting in America brought bump stocks to national attention, the rifle modification is again for sale and there's no regulation on the horizon.Slide Fire, the company that owns the patent on the rifle modification, said it has resumed taking new orders for bump stocks for the first time after temporarily suspending new sales a month ago."We will resume limited sales on November 1st at 8:30 a.m. CST," said Slide Fire, in an email from its customer services department to prospective buyers. "However, we have not yet reached adequate inventory levels to offer sales of all products."For most of October, the company kept a message posted to its homepage saying that sales of bump stocks were suspended.That suspension happened shortly after gunman Stephen Paddock used rifles fitted with bump stocks to commit the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history on October 1 in Las Vegas. A Memphis woman wants answers after getting a nearly ,000 dollar bill from Memphis Light, Gas and Water.Florence Ford said the utility insisted the astronomical amount is no mistake.They told her a water leak led to the 5-figure bill, but Ford doesn't think MLGW's story is adding up.The 60-year-old brings in just enough every month from disability checks to pay her rent and insurance costs."I had four blood clots, I’ve got nerve damage on the right side and I had a stroke," she said.So, when Ford opened up her bill late January for ,423, she was floored.Her normally bill had skyrocketed to ,995 for water alone, just for one month."What the hell? If I’m on a fixed income, how can I pay a ,000 water bill?" she said.Ford called MLGW and said she was told the massive bill was due to a water leak on her property, and that she’d need a plumber to fix it."Some pipe or something had come loose and they took care of it," she said.According to Ford's bill, her water usage during the month of December was 4,983 CCFs (centum cubic feet). That’s close to 4 million gallons, which is enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool almost six times.MLGW told Ford a representative called her and left a note on her door, but she said before getting that bill, no one from the utility ever reached out to tell her there was a problem."Didn’t call, didn’t leave a voicemail, said they left a note on the door. No note on the door," she said.A friend and former lawyer told Ford it would be impossible not to realize that much water was leaking in front of her home."He said if I had a ,000 water bill, my house should have been floating down the street somewhere," she said.Ford said she spoke to someone at MLGW again, who suggested she file for bankruptcy.The next month she got another bill, leaving her owing nearly ,000, which is just a couple hundred dollars shy of what she brings in in an entire year."If I don’t pay that, they’re going to cut my utilities off, so I’m going to be without utilities," Ford said. A Tennessee man was arrested after watching ISIS videos, and then lying about his stay at a mental institution when he tried to buy a sniper rifle, according to federal officials.According to a federal indictment, federal agents began looking into Khari Malik Whitehead last year, after they talked to someone who knew him. That person told Metro Nashville Police they were concerned Whitehead was watching ISIS propaganda videos on the internet.They also told the ATF Whitehead may have possibly been radicalized, and that they were afraid that he may commit a mass murder one day.The indictment said Whitehead was committed to a mental institution late last year, but he lied about that in February on a background check form he filled out at the Walmart in La Vergne as he tried to buy a semi-automatic rifle. He asked to purchase a rifle that could "hold a lot of bullets"However, the purchase didn't go through. His stay at the mental institution was picked up by the background check, and Whitehead was denied the purchase.Whitehead's lie on the background check form was enough for federal prosecutors to file charges against him. 1175
