SAINT PAUL, Minn. – As college campuses around the country reopen, more than 200 student-run EMS programs are bracing for the inevitable surge in on-campus COVID-19 cases.“I don’t think it will fully hit me until we gear up and I am headed out to that first call,” said Hannah Gilbert.Gilbert is co-president of the student-run EMS program at Macalester College in Minnesota. The school is allowing some students to return to campus, mostly first-year international students, while the rest of the student body will start the semester with online classes. Later in the semester, Macalester may slowly transition more classes to in-person, depending on the containment of COVID-19.With the expectation of, at least, some student returning to campus, MAC-EMS is preparing for the possible surge in COVID-19 cases by, first, increasing service from two days a week to seven days a week this semester.“We need to put the work in so that we are prepared for every situation we can imagine, and we have to be ready to adapt to every situation we can’t imagine,” said Gilbert.The college is also stockpiling PPE gear for the student EMTs, while Gilbert is leading refresher courses in providing oxygen, opening airways, and even responding to a cardiac arrest situation, since those are the most troubling symptoms connected with COVID-19.“It is definitely something that is different because we don’t normally see a lot of respiratory situations, that is not the normal patient load,” said Macalester College Student EMT Kate Seeger.New COVID-19-related protocols have also been written into the student EMT handbook. The biggest change is, when possible, EMTs will now start a call with a virtual screening.“We are actually going to be zooming them, or facetiming or Skyping them from outside their room,” said Gilbert.The goal with virtual screenings is to determine their risk of exposure to COVID-19 and what PPE gear is needed to provide service safely. However, the hope is that all this training and preparations isn’t as necessary as some experts suggest.“We wish we could be on the frontlines of prevention, and we are definitely going to be out there trying to be good role models for our peers, but at the same time instinctively and intrinsically we are the ones who show up when there is an emergency,” said Gilbert. “A lot has to go wrong before you get to that emergency, so you can’t just rely on us.”Student EMTs at Macalester College, and at other colleges around the country, are relying on their classmates to adhere to social distancing guidelines and other safety protocols so they can now help on the frontlines without being overwhelmed. 2663

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A five-vehicle pileup at a College Area intersection left two young women severely injured and sent four others drivers to the hospital, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 70th Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 63-year-old man driving a 2016 Mercedes E400 eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of a 2015 Ford Fusion sitting in the northbound turn lane to 70th Street, Buttle said.The impact pushed both vehicles into the westbound lanes, where they were both struck by three vehicles -- a Nissan Rogue SUV, a BMW and a Honda Civic, the officer said. At that point, the Ford caught fire, leaving two 22-year-old women trapped inside before witnesses pulled them from the car.Both women suffered second- and third-degree burns over 70% of their bodies, along with uncontrolled internal bleeding, Buttle said. They were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were considered life-threatening.The Mercedes driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, Officer Tony Martinez said.The Nissan driver, a 20-year-old woman, the BMW driver, a 63-year-old man, and the Honda driver were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Buttle said.No details about the Honda driver were immediately available. 1427

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A day after District Attorney Summer Stephen criticized the San Diego Police Department for employing incomplete testing of DNA evidence in some unsolved rape cases, Chief David Nisleit Wednesday announced that his agency would thoroughly analyze all such materials from now on.On Tuesday, Stephen told Voice of San Diego -- which revealed the contested investigative policy last week in an in-depth investigative story -- that the SDPD should not have performed incomplete examinations of dozens of rape kits while working through a decades-long backlog of open sex-assault cases."I don't think that that's the right thing to do," the district attorney told VOSD.Wednesday afternoon, the police chief announced that he had reached the same decision."We recognize the community has high expectations for us," Nisleit said in a prepared statement. "We also hold ourselves to the highest of standards. In order to meet these expectations, we will be working with a private laboratory to ensure all 1,700 historical kits are tested."When a sexual assault is reported to law enforcement, nurses collect swabs from different parts of a victim's body in search of the perpetrator's genetic material, and file away the DNA samples for testing in the future.Six months ago, San Diego police began testing only a single swab from dozens of previously untested kits, as opposed to the full set of a half- dozen available in each case, VOSD reported. The procedure was reserved for situations in which the district attorney had declined to prosecute, or when a warrant already had been issued for a suspect's arrest.That practice is officially a thing of the past, according to Nisleit."Moving forward, the department will test every single kit using a six-swab method," he said.According to SDPD officials, about 40 rape kits had been tested in the abbreviated manner. Though the department defended the procedure as appropriate in the relatively rare selected cases, an SDPD crime-lab analyst who spoke on condition of anonymity told Voice of San Diego there was another motivation."The reason given was, `We just need to check the box,"' the department staffer said. "There was no scientific reason given, not that `This would be more effective.' There was no indication that this was anything other than a political policy decision."The department canceled the policy in August, a day after Voice of San Diego first asked about it, according to the nonprofit news agency.Stephen said the District Attorney's Office had not approved of -- or even known about -- the investigative shortcuts being employed by the SDPD on some of the old rape kits it was reviewing."We assume that the testing will be done by proper standards," she told VOSD. "We don't get into the technical (aspects), because that's not our area. We trust that forensic experts will make those decisions correctly ... . Mistakes happen, but the key is to not get stuck on ego, to correct and to move forward so we can serve this community."Last year, the District Attorney's Office formalized an agreement with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and 11 other police departments in the county -- all but the SDPD -- to clear the region's backlog of rape kits by forwarding them to outside laboratories for testing.Declining to join the effort, the SDPD instead opted to create an internal group to tackle the task.
