They say all’s fair in love and war.And at least one Provo, Utah man took the epithet seriously when he seized an opportune moment to propose to his girlfriend a day before Valentine’s Day — from the back of a cop car.Provo police officer Courtney Manwaring pulled a man and woman over during a routine traffic stop Tuesday but soon discovered a warrant for the man’s arrest, according to a Facebook post from the Provo Police Department. Manwaring handcuffed the man, then cited his female companion for drug offenses. The man then asked Manwaring if he could speak to his girlfriend from the back of the officer’s patrol car. When Manwaring agreed, the man professed his love for his companion and asked her to marry him.“They both cried, and she said yes,” the Provo Police Department confirmed in their post.As of Thursday morning, the post had been liked nearly 500 times and shared 30.Police have not identified the couple involved in the arrest because they “want them to move past yesterday’s arrest and have long and happy lives.”The police department praised Manwaring for working through an enforcement issue while still treating people with dignity. The department even waxed poetic, citing a line from the famous opera, "Carmen."“Love is a gypsy’s child who knows no law.” 1296

There are things you do that may take little thought, like text a friend, FaceTime a relative, or order something off Amazon. But, for many senior citizens, these actions are new."Technology is slowly opening up all these doors to different things. To watch YouTube videos, they’ve never seen anything like that," said Connie Nelson, franchise owner of Visiting Angels.Nelson works with the elderly, who need assistance in their homes. She says introducing this generation that’s used to delayed gratification to technology is playing a huge role in helping them get through this pandemic."I think the biggest surprise for them is how instant it is. They’re used to a phone call, somebody has to answer. This is just instant. You text a grandchild and they text you immediately," said Nelson. The technology Nelson’s at-home caregivers are teaching the senior citizens ranges from texting to ordering groceries from Alexa."They’re sitting there all day, waiting. They’re waiting for a phone call or they’re waiting for a visit, and sometimes they don’t come because everybody’s busy. But once you hand technology to them, the response is there," said Nelson. And while most of this education is for entertainment purposes, Nelson says they’re walking patients through telemedicine in hopes they’ll continue using it in the future."I think at first they’re a little standoffish. Like, ‘No, he has to see me, touch me. He has to check my ears.’ And, if they can get past that, they won’t get the physical exam, but you’ll get that face-to-face where you can actually tell him what’s going on. It’s not going to replace all visits, but some it can," said Nelson.Teaching them skills like FaceTime, even using social media like Facebook, is keeping them connected to those who may not be able to visit right now."Once they learn it, it’s so rewarding because they’re staying up to date with what’s going on in their loved ones’ lives," said Nelson.Learning the new tech is helping to cure the loneliness that can come with the COVID-19 pandemic. 2047

There have been several mass shootings this year, and people are still trying to figure out ways to prevent them from happening. The latest shooting occurred at a Madden 19 game tournament in Jacksonville, Florida. The attack left two dead and nine others are still recovering from gunshot wounds. So far this year, there have been 8 notable mass shootings. So, what’s being done? The federal government has not passed any major gun legislation in more than a dozen years. Action has been mostly on the state and local levels. On Monday, California lawmakers approved a trio of bills to reduce the number of people with firearm access, including lifetime bans for people convicted of domestic violence or individuals placed on involuntary psychiatric holds twice in one year.Florida also tightened gun controls, by raising the age to purchase a firearm to 21 and banning bump stock. In Connecticut, the governor signed a bill banning bump stocks. Deerfield, Illinois banned assault weapons, within city limits, and in New Jersey, it’s required that therapists and counselors alert law enforcement if a patient has threatened serious violence against themselves or others. Their right to buy a gun can then be revoked. The battle continues to wage on how to handle these types of shootings, but so far, there appears to be no federal push to make major changes, leaving efforts up to states and cities.  1414
