LJUBLJANA, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu arrived in Slovenia on Wednesday evening on a two-day official visit to boost economic cooperation between the two countries.     Hui, who was accompanied by a strong business delegation, will on Thursday hold talks with Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor, President Danilo Tuerk, Parliament Speaker Pavel Gantar and Foreign Minister Samuel Zbogar. These talks are expected to focus on the boosting of economic cooperation as well as the world economic crisis.     Officials from both countries will sign five documents expectedto strengthen the cooperation in areas of agriculture, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), health care and education.     On Thursday afternoon Hui and Pahor will attend and address a plenary session of the Chinese-Slovenian business forum.     According to the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the business forum will be attended by representatives of 60 Chinese companies from the fields of construction, engineering, telecommunications, electronics, trade, as well as textile, chemical, food and banking industries.     Slovenia is the first leg of Hui's three-nation visit, which will also take him to Lithuania and Latvia. Hui will also attend the third World Climate Conference, which is scheduled to be held in Geneva, Switzerland from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4.

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday proposed closer cooperation among members of a regional security group to tackle the world economic recession.     "Confronted with the global financial crisis and aiming at a steady economic growth, member states of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) should work together and seek mutual benefit," Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang told a SCO business forum in Beijing.     The SCO was founded in 2001 to enhance security cooperation among its six member states, namely, China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Mongolia, India, Iran and Pakistan are observers to the regional group. Instead, it offered more opportunities for them to work together," Li said, citing the fact that SCO members are complementary in economies and have an increasingly-connected market.     Although the total population and territories of SCO member states amounted to a quarter and one fifth of the world's total, their overall economic scale and trade volume made up only the world's 11 percent or 10 percent respectively, Li said.     "Thus, there is a huge potential for SCO member states to expand economic and technology cooperation," Li said.     He called for SCO member states to carry out the joint actions to deal with the global slump and accelerate the process of trade and investment liberalization.     He proposed promoting the projects that involved and benefited multiple parties, building infrastructure networks of transportation, communications and energy.     It was necessary to step up cooperation in modern agriculture, emerging industries, high-tech and social welfare so as to benefit the people, Li said.     He vowed that China will unswervingly pursue the path of peaceful development, take a more active part in SCO affairs, fully participate in regional economic and regional cooperation in a bid to work for the welfare of 1.5 billion people within the SCO member states.     The business forum was an important event under the framework of the eighth SCO prime ministers' meeting, which took place on Wednesday.

BUDAPEST, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met here Friday with Hungarian President Solyom Laszlo, and put forward a four-point proposal to help further bilateral relations.     The Chinese vice-president proposed to maintain high-level contacts aimed at cementing friendship, to enhance economic cooperation and investment aimed at balancing trade, to improve personnel exchanges aimed at furthering understanding, and to join hands in promoting a healthy development of China-European Union relations. MACAO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Macao Special Administrative Region(SAR) Legislative Election General Auditing Committee announced the official results of the election of the fourth Legislative Assembly of Macao on Tuesday night.     In line with the Basic Law, the new legislature is composed of 29 seats including 12 directly-elected seats, 10 indirectly-elected seats, and seven others which will be appointed by the SAR's chief executive.     A total of 122 candidates from 16 groups contested in the direct elections, while the indirect elections did not take place since only 10 candidates have been fielded by the four constituencies involved for the 10 seats.     Eight of the 12 candidates who won the direct elections were veteran lawmakers that have served their terms in the legislature, which includes Kwan Tsui Hang, Chan Meng Kam, Ng Kuok Cheong, Angela Leong On Kei, Jose Maria Pereira Coutinho, Lee Chong Cheng, Ung Choi Kun, and Au Kam San were the winners of the direct elections, while Ho Ion Sang, Mak Soi Kun, Chan Wai Chi and Melinda Chan Mei Yi become the new faces in the legislature.     For the part of indirect elections, the list of winners comprises Ho Iat Seng, Kou Hoi In, Fong Chi Keong, and Cheang Chi Keong of the industrial, commercial and financial sector; Lau Cheok Va, Lam Heong Sang of labor sector; Chui Sai Cheong and Leonel Alberto Alves of professional sector; Vitor Cheung Lup Kwan and Chan Chak Mo of social, cultural, educational and sports sector.     The election of the fourth term of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR officially started Sunday morning. The authorities delayed announcing the results of the legislative election because6,539 ballots were found to be spoiled, the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs committee said Monday.     Some 149,006 of the total 249,886 registered voters cast their ballots during the polling period, but 6,539 of these ballots were deemed as invalid, according to the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs Committee.     This year's voter turnout stood at 59.9 percent, compared with 58.39 percent in the previous legislative election in 2005.     The results of the legislative election still need to be submitted to the SAR's Court for final approval, and the confirmed results will be published on the SAR's Official Gazette on Sept. 30 at the latest.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- China still has a long way to go in upgrading industrial processes, although it had managed to secure economic stabilization and was moving upwards, Zhuang Jian, a senior economist with the Asian Development Bank, said Thursday.     "China has achieved great success in bolstering the economy's growth through a series of plans to stimulate it, but it should also continue making efforts to upgrade its industries, as well as its energy-saving and pollution reduction measures, to sustain development," Zhuang said.     China's economic growth had slowed during the global downturn, but expanded 7.9 percent in the second quarter of 2009 year on year after sinking to 6.1 percent in the first quarter.     Zhuang said the improvement of China's industrial structure and increasing energy conservation were of critical importance to the world.     Government figures show the amount of energy consumed in China to produce a unit of gross domestic product (GDP) dropped 3.35 percent year on year in the first half. The decrease compares with 2.88 percent for the first half of last year.     China should also promote domestic consumption to boost economic growth, he said.
