DESCANSO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Sixth-graders frolicked in the snow in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park Thursday, thrilled to learn about science."We're trying to take what they're learning in school and making it come alive," Principal of Cuyamaca Outdoor School Greg Schuett said. The kids come for a full school week, but the classes are unlike any these students have attended before."Last time my group went on a hike we saw something with erosion! So like what happened is the rain because of one day of rain it split one part of land into two parts," a sixth-grader said excitedly.Schuett said the students go on nature hikes. Some students see wildlife like coyotes, deer and turkeys for the first time.RELATED: Complete coverage of California's winter storms"We are a science camp we are teaching kids how life functions on earth," Schuett said. Some students have already taken the lessons to heart, making them think of future career paths in the sciences. Among the once in a lifetime opportunities: seeing snow fall for the first time, sledding, and participating in snowball fights.About 12,000 students, mostly from San Diego, come out each school year thanks to funds from the San Diego County Office of Education, school districts and of course, parents. 1267
Despite a partial government shutdown experts say could stretch into the new year, NORAD’s famous Santa Tracker will still be up and running. According to ABC News, hundreds of volunteers decked out in Christmas hats and military uniforms will still take calls from children around the world. The military told ABC News that the Santa Tracker won’t be affected because it’s run by volunteers at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. LIVE: Follow Santa with NORAD's trackerThe Santa Tracker is in its 63rd year. The famous phone line became a tradition after a mistaken phone call to the Continental Air Defense Command in 1955. CONAD had the job of monitoring a radar network for any sign of a nuclear attack. When Col. Harry Shoup answered the phone one day, on the other end was a child who wanted to speak with Santa. According to ABC News, a local newspaper ran an ad inviting kids to call Santa, but listed the wrong number. Democrat Dan McCready is withdrawing his concession in a North Carolina congressional race where investigators are probing allegations of election fraud.McCready got 905 fewer votes than Republican Mark Harris in the 9th District race. But the state elections board has refused to certify the results as it investigates potential misconduct with absentee ballots, making it the last undecided House contest in the country. The board could ultimately order another election.McCready had previously conceded the race to Harris, but withdrew that concession Thursday."I didn't serve overseas in the Marines to come home to NC and watch a criminal, bankrolled by my opponent, take away people's very right to vote," McCready tweeted. "Today I withdraw my concession and call on Mark Harris to end his silence and tell us exactly what he knew, and when."His reversal comes as the state elections board, as well as local and state prosecutors, investigate whether Leslie McCrae Dowless, a veteran operative in Bladen County who was hired by a consulting firm the Harris campaign paid 0,000, altered absentee ballots or collected them from voters but never turned them in.Dowless earned more than ,000 working on six campaigns dating back to 2010, and in most of those races, Dowless' candidates received a disproportionately higher percentage of absentee votes in Bladen County.Dowless has not returned CNN's requests for comment. He has denied any wrongdoing to The Charlotte Observer.Earlier Thursday, North Carolina Republican Party executive director Dallas Woodhouse told CNN he would support a new election if the elections board proves allegations of fraud are true and impacted the outcome of the race."We are not ready to call for a new election yet," Woodhouse said. "I think we have to let the board of elections come show their hand if they can show that this conceivably could have flipped the race in that neighborhood, we will absolutely support a new election."The-CNN-Wire 1997
DETROIT - The bodies of 11 infants were found in the ceiling of a former funeral home on Detroit's east side Friday evening, according to Detroit Police. Police say the bodies were found in a box and in a small casket. Cadaver dogs were on scene, and in all police found the 11 bodies of infants and stillborns. The Cantrell Funeral Home was shut down earlier this year due to several violations and "deplorable, unsanitary conditions." Police say a tip through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) sparked the investigation. LARA reported Cantrell Funeral Home had 60 days to either assign its existing prepaid contracts to another person registered under the Prepaid Act and notify the Department and contract buyers of the assignment within 30 days of the assignment. The funeral home's other option was to cancel their current contracts and issue refunds to each contract buyer, providing copies of refund checks and correspondence to each contract buyer to the Department within 90 days, unless the Department modifies, vacates, or extends the terms of the Order.A spokesperson from LARA has released this statement regarding their investigation: 1228
