SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The man accused of raping and torturing a woman in his home in Rancho Penasquitos faced a judge today. 32-year-old Uber driver, Seyed Hassan Kaboli pleaded not guilty to 12 counts of sexual crimes. Kaboli peaked through his holding cell, as the judge announced his fate. San Diego Police said Kaboli bound, raped, and tortured a woman, multiple times at his home in Rancho Penasquitos on May 19th and 20th. Sky10 footage showed the victim being consoled by the police on Monday, and she said she ran naked to escape 24 hours of brutal misery. The next day, Kaboli was arrested just north of National City. 10News obtained a copy of the criminal complaint, explaining Kaboli’s 12 felony charges. Under count three, it reads Kaboli “inflicted aggravated mayhem and torture on the victim and another person.”Under count eleven, it reads “said person was unlawfully restrained by said defendant and an accomplice.”In the courtroom, neither the defense nor the district attorney would comment on a possible third party.Still, the judge issued a protective order for the victim— a woman, whose relationship was not disclosed. But Kaboli’s defense attorney said she was not his Uber customer. “There is no prior relationship,” Kaboli’s attorney, Ryan Tegnelia said. “He is not denying that they came into contact with each other on the date of the incident. But before that, they did not have any relationship.”Tegnelia said Kaboli’s family describes him as an introverted man who keeps to himself. They said they are shocked at his arrest. “This obviously came completely out of left field for them, caught everybody by surprise,” Tegnelia said. The judge set Kaboli’s bail amount at 0,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Flags are being flown at half-staff around the country today to honor fallen firefighters and to promote emergency preparedness. Sunday is also the kick-off of National Fire Prevention Week.Cher Smith's home in Crest has a 360-degree view of nature. It's beautiful to look at, but dangerous during fire season. "Somebody is throwing a cigarette out, sparks from a car, whatever," Smith said. "There's always that fear that something is all of a sudden going to cause a fire to get out of control."In the last month, she and her son-in-law spent hours clearing up the dead brush on her 2.5 acre property. "We just barely made a dent on what needed to be done," Smith said. Smith said she couldn't afford to pay a landscaper to finish the job, but that all changed when she looked out her window earlier this week. "They are all up there like ants on the mountain bringing down the brush," Smith said. She saw CALFIRE and inmate fire crews working earnestly, with shovels in hand, to create a safe, defensible space. The space won't just create a defensible space for Smith's home, but for the entire Crest community. "I said, 'You have no idea how jazzed I am that you guys are doing this for us!'" Smith said enthusiastically. That's because just last month, she watched the Dehesa fire, creeping up toward her home. Also, back in 2003, her son-in-law lost his childhood home to a wildfire."A lot of people in Crest had their homes burned, so I think people are on high alert and sensitive to the dangers," Smith said. That's why to kick off National Fire Prevention Week, she wants to thank the fire service for their hard work. She also wants to remind her East County neighbors to be prepared. "I like to see our tax dollars going to being proactive, rather than having them create these fire barriers after the fact," Smith said. 1861

San Diego, CA (KGTV)- Some high school students in the Grossmont Union High School District will return to partial in-person learning starting on September 29.Sixty-eight percent of parents surveyed districtwide wanted their high school students to return to an in-person, blended learning model, while 32 percent wanted their students to stay in full-time distance learning from home.The district is moving forward with both options.Starting Tuesday, some students will be back on campus with limitations."Students have to be divided into smaller groups," said Theresa Kemper, the district's superintendent.If parents chose the blended learning model, their student has been assigned to Group A, Group B, Group C, or Group D, based on factions like students per household, transportation needs, and course schedule."They each will come to school one day a week," she said.The group placement determines which day the students will come to campus; they will be learning from home the rest of the time.The district created a roadmap for reopening, which includes five levels."We want to make sure that we're really confident with new routines that have been established, we want to make sure the county health conditions are continuing to improve," said Kemper.All schools in the district have been operating at Level 1, which is strictly distance learning.Level 2 begins next week and allows students to learn on campus one day a week, with 25 percent of the campus population, in class sizes of eight to twelve students."Our Special Education academies and alternative schools are also starting at Level 2, but will attend two days a week instead of one," she said.All students will be screened and have their temperatures checked before entering the classroom, teachers, and staff will be tested for COVID-19 regularly, and everyone will be required to wear facial coverings.The schools will also be deep cleaned each day, and students will be physically distanced from one another."If everything looks good, after about two weeks, we could potentially announce going to the next level," said Kemper.By level five, students will be back on campus five days a week.Kemper said the district is taking a cautious approach and has plans in place if a school needs to jump back a level at any time."If we change from two days a week to one day a week, then we already got a plan in place, and it's easy to transition to that," she said. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A large San Diego Church is continuing to hold in person, indoor services despite orders from San Diego County to hold services in outdoor settings only. Awaken Church has gotten three cease and desist orders at different locations and also had an outbreak at one of those locations, according to San Diego County.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the church is not cooperating with the county in regards to the outbreak at their Balboa location, so the county had to publicly announce the community outbreak and ask anyone impacted to quarantine. A church would have to prove that they were treated differently.“If religions are being treated in a nondiscriminatory fashion, in other words if there’s a general law that establishes how many people can be in a room or what are the conditions, and it happens to have an incidentally impact on religion, that’s not a special problem as long as government has a rational reason for doing that, that’s alright. It’s only when government discriminates against religion that a special level of review called strict scrutiny is required and government has to have a really really good reason for discrimination,” said Smith.He added that the makeup of a court will also impact any future decisions on religious freedom, saying when Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was alive, cases regarding religious freedom during the pandemic were found to not be discriminatory, however with the newly appointed Justice Barrett, it’s more likely the Supreme Court would rule in favor of a church. 3009

SAN DIEGO, California — An 18-year-old San Diego woman died and her 16-year-old cousin were injured in a crash on Interstate 10 on the way to the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, a friend told KGTV television station in San Diego.Federico Pedrazzini confirmed Ginevra Gallone-Latte died in the crash in Banning early Thursday morning. Her cousin Manuela was injured.The California Highway Patrol said 21-year-old Cesar Hernandezozuna was speeding when his BMW drifted onto the dirt shoulder. The driver tried to get back onto the freeway but went over an embankment and hit two trees, officers said.The crash split the car in two. Gallone-Latte was thrown and died at the scene, according to the CHP.Her cousin was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Hernandezozuna suffered a facial injury, according to the CHP.Both teens had previously attended La Jolla High School.Officers ruled out alcohol and drugs as contributing factors in the crash but had not determined the cause, the CHP said. 1019
