(KGTV) - Local activists are planning a protest Monday after multiple reports saying fans of San Clemente High School’s football team allegedly shouted racist slurs at students of San Diego’s Lincoln High School at a football game Friday night in Orange County.The NAACP San Diego said that multiple spectators from the home team heckled the Lincoln High players and cheer squad, repeatedly using racial slurs including the "n-word.""Furthermore, cheer squad members were racially harassed in restrooms, again including the 'n-word.' This harassment came not only from high-school-age youth, but also from adult fans,” Clovis Honoré, president of the NAACP San Diego Branch wrote in a letter to San Clemente High School and district officials. “We are shocked and disgusted that such blatant racism would occur in 2019 at an athletic contest for high school students,” said Honoré. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was wounded in a shooting outside an El Cerrito smoke shop, police said Monday.The shooting happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. Sunday outside Aztec Smoke Shop, in a strip mall near the corner of 60th Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The victim, a 22-year-old man, was confronted by two men as he was getting into his car after exiting the smoke shop, Buttle said.The two men shot the victim four times, then fled the scene eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard in a gray VW Jetta, the officer said.The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds to his chest and leg, Buttle said, adding that the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.Both suspects were described as 5-foot-11 Black men in their early 20s with thin builds. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A community vigil to honor last week's El Paso shooting victims is set for 7 p.m. Sunday in Balboa Park, organizers said Saturday."We wanted to express our grief and be there for the community," Jessica Yanez Perez, a vigil organizer, said. "As a border city with strong Latino heritage, we stand with El Paso and grieve with them."The two-hour event will be held outside the Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park and will feature community speakers, a prayer vigil and biographies of the 22 victims of Aug. 3's mass shooting, Perez said."This event is an opportunity to bring the community together as we mourn, remember and hopefully, in time, heal," Perez said. "It's our shared responsibility to speak out against white supremacy and intolerance, and to build an America where all of us are safe."A traditional mariachi band will perform at the vigil, she said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A bill that would keep court hearings related to the release of Sexually Violent Predators open to the public was unveiled Tuesday by a state senator who worked with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office to craft the legislation.SB 1023, dubbed the Sexually Violent Predator Act, would prohibit proceedings related to Sexually Violent Predators -- or SVPs -- from being held behind closed doors, particularly when the hearings involve potentially releasing the offenders to a conditional housing program in the community.Recently, hearings regarding the proposed release and placement of SVP Alvin Ray Quarles, 57, otherwise known as the "Bolder-Than-Most" rapist, were held behind closed doors in San Diego County Superior Court.Judge David Gill kept the hearings under wraps due to privacy concerns over the potential disclosure of Quarles' psychiatric reports.The closed-door nature of the hearings drew protests from victims' advocates, include two of Quarles' victims, Mary Taylor and Cynthia Medina.Sen. Patricia Bates, R-Laguna Niguel, who authored SB 1023, issued a joint statement with San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan, saying SVP hearings should be held in open court "unless compelling and extraordinary circumstances justify closing the courtroom to the public.""District Attorney Summer Stephan and I believe that court hearings for sexually violent predators should be open to the public unless a judge can provide a compelling reason," Bates said. "Victims, their families, and the public have a legitimate interest in witnessing hearings through which a predator might be released."Gill ruled last year that Quarles should be released to a conditional housing program, though that decision is currently being appealed by the District Attorney's Office.Quarles, who was previously sentenced to 50 years in prison for committing more than a dozen sexual assaults in the mid-to-late 1980s, was slated to be housed at a residence in Jacumba Hot Springs, but that agreement fell through."This important legislation supports the principles of democracy and transparency in our justice system by making sure court hearings for sexually violent predators are open to the public," Stephan said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was fatally stabbed during a fight in the College Area, police said Thursday.The stabbing was reported shortly before 7:35 p.m. Wednesday at a home near 71st Street and Mohawk Street, about two blocks north of El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Officers responded and found a man suffering from at least one stab wound to his upper torso, Dobbs said. The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:56 p.m. Wednesday.Investigators determined the victim was hosting a gathering at the residence when some a disagreement began, prompting the him to ask people to leave, the lieutenant said. About 30 minutes later, some of the attendees returned and a fight broke out, during which the victim was stabbed.The suspects drove off in two vehicles, one described as a silver sedan and the other as a tan- or gold-colored sedan, Dobbs said.No detailed descriptions of the suspects were immediately available. 1043
