Renowned Tulsa saxophonist and Race Massacre survivor, Hal Singer, has passed away, just a few months shy of his 101st birthday.The French city of Chatou announced the news of his death. Singer resided in the town for more than 20 years."Weakened in recent years, Hal Singer has passed out peacefully surrounded by his wife and family," the release stated.Singer, who was born in Tulsa on Oct. 8, 1919, would go on to have an "exceptional 70-year career, from Duke Ellington to Ray Charles, to Billie Holiday," the release said.According to the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame website, Singer topped the R&B charts in Sept. 1948 with his instrumental recording "Corn Bread.""The City just lost a friend, an artist, and a great man," the release concluded. RAINBOW, Calif. (KGTV) - A new overpass may be destined for the I-15, not for people but mountain lions.A just-released study led by The Nature Conservancy and backed by the National Park Service recommended a stretch of the I-15 just south of Temecula - either an overpass or underpass like crossings in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming - allowing mountain lions and other wildlife to safely get across.On the west side of the highway is preserve space owned by San Diego State University.  On the other side are 73 acres just purchased by The Nature Conservancy.  Experts says the local mountain lions have been cut off by the freeways and are practicing inbreeding."That makes them more susceptible to disease, and that could be catastrophic for the mountain lion population," said Cara Lacey, an associate program director at The Nature Conservancy.Lacey points out crossings in other states have also cut down on vehicle collisions with wildlife.  She says at least three mountain lions were struck by vehicles in that stretch of I-15 in 2017.  Caltrans is studying a crossing on Highway 101, which would cost between and million. 1165

Bush, 93, was hospitalized Sunday morning, less than one day after his wife's Barbara memorial service, a Bush family spokesperson said on Monday. "President Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital yesterday morning after contracting an infection that spread to his blood," Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said. "He is responding well to treatments and appears to be recovering." Bush's wife of 73 years Barbara Bush died last Tuesday after a period of failing health from COPD and heart disease. President Bush was present on Saturday at his wife's memorial service, which was attended by former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Bush has had several recent spells of poor health. In April 2017, Bush had an extended hospital stay after suffering from pneumonia. Earlier in 2017, Bush was unable to attend President Donald Trump's inauguration due to treatment for a blockage from his lungs. Bush also has a mild form of Parkinson's Disease, which has kept him in a wheelchair since 2012. Bush is the oldest former President ever at age 93 years and 315 days, which is 111 days older than Jimmy Carter, and 150 days older than when Gerald Ford died in 2006. 1254

Record high ocean temperatures are bringing large crowds to San Diego beaches. The warm water also has the potential to attract more stingrays and jellyfish to the area.The Scripps Institute of Oceanography reports that surface ocean temperatures reached a record 79.5 degrees Sunday, which is more than ten degrees above normal. That, combined with unseasonably hot and humid weather, brought 333,680 people to City of San Diego beaches over the weekend, city lifeguards estimate. Clarissa Anderson, executive director of the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, said it's unclear what has led to the higher temperatures. "The last several years we really have seen these anomalous temperatures every summer," she said, adding that the hot and humid water could be playing a role.The warm waters could also attract more stingrays to plant themselves along the shallow sand and jelly fish in the water just off shore. People who don't shuffle their feet risk a sting from the ray, while jelly fish sting on contact."More people are going to the beach, warmer temperatures, nice water and so you've just got more people and more animals, higher probability of encounter," Anderson said. Anderson said it was unclear how long these high temperatures would last. She noted the county had record low ocean temperatures - based on date of year - just a few weeks ago. 1422

Republican Sen. Susan Collins, of Maine, is calling embattled EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt "the wrong person" to head the agency "on policy grounds alone."Collins voted against Pruitt's confirmation, and said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union" that his actions on the environment, "whether it's trying to undermine the Clean Power Plan or weaken the restrictions on lead or undermine the methane rules," validate her decision.Pruitt has come under fire for a string of ethically questionable actions over the past year, including renewed questions over the amount he is spending on his large security detail?and over his travel and housing arrangements."This daily drop of accusations of excessive spending and ethical violations serve to further distract the agency from accomplishing its very important mission," Collins said.
