(KGTV) — El Cajon Police are warning residents of a recent string of street robberies that have occurred over the past several weeks.Police said the victims have been described as elderly men and have been physically assaulted from behind by a lone suspect. None of the victims report seeing a weapon, but have been robbed while walking on public sidewalks in the areas of the 1000 block of East Main Street and the 800 block of Buena Terrace.The suspect in each case varies, but has been described as either an African American, Hispanic, or Middle Eastern male within the ages of 20 to 40 years old. (KGTV) — El Cajon Police and the NAACP say they are trying to reach out to the family of a man hit and killed by a car last week after family and friends accused police of shooting the man.Police say the protest stemmed from a Nov. 25 traffic fatality involving Stephen Harris, 29, of El Cajon. Harris was hit by a vehicle just before 9 p.m. in the 300 block of West Chase Ave. and died at the scene, according to police.EPD says the driver who hit Harris remained at the scene and tried to provide first aid to him, along with the help of a passenger in the vehicle. Police do not suspect the driver of driving under the influence or speeding at the time of the crash. Witnesses told police Harris suddenly walked into the roadway at the time of the crash, EPD added.Surveillance footage reportedly showed Harris leaving a nearby convenience store and stumbling before the collision, police said. Officials said a toxicology report is being conducted, but police said preliminary testing showed drugs and alcohol in Harris' system at the time of his death.Family and friends of Harris arrived at the scene after the crash and accused police of being involved in Harris' death, saying officers were stalking him, shot him, and were trying to cover it up. During a protest on Nov. 30, family and friends continued their accusations against the department, with some protesters obstructing traffic. Due to a recent rise in reported health issues, the US Food and Drug Administration warned on Tuesday against using or purchasing Rhino male enhancement products.Since 2007, the FDA said, it has identified more than 25 Rhino products, some with names such as Platinum Rhino 25000 and Krazzy Rhino 25000, that have hidden drug ingredients.The FDA said the products are often sold in single-serving packages at locations such as gas stations and convenience stores, or through online retailers such as eBay and Amazon. Recently, the products have also been found in international mail shipments, the agency said.In an email, eBay spokesman Ryan Moore said, "Product safety is important to eBay and we work hard to ensure our marketplace is free of harmful products. These types of items are prohibited under our policies, and therefore not allowed to be listed on the eBay market place." EBay regularly sweeps the site to remove such items, he said.Amazon has not responded to a request for comment."Over the past few years, the FDA has been combatting the retail sale of male enhancement drug products that are frequently misrepresented as dietary supplements and that contain hidden and potentially harmful active drug ingredients," said Donald D. Ashley, director of the Office of Compliance at the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.According to the FDA, the "products contain undeclared ingredients that are the same as or structurally similar to active ingredients found in FDA-approved prescription drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction."For example, some Rhino products contain the same active ingredient as Viagra and Cialis, sildenafil and/or tadalafil, respectively. These undeclared ingredients can lead to "significant safety issues and the risk of serious adverse events," the FDA said."The FDA has received reports of people experiencing chest pain, severe headaches and prolonged erections after taking a Rhino product that led to surgical intervention and hospitalization due to extreme drops in blood pressure," according to the agency.People who experience negative health effects or have issues with the quality or safety of a dietary supplement can report it to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information program. Products identified by the FDA as having hidden active drug ingredients can be found in the tainted products database.Not all misrepresented products are included in the database, and consumers should still be wary, the FDA noted."Consumers should be cautious about using certain products, especially those promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss, bodybuilding and/or pain relief. Driving down a dirt logging road in rural Maine, paramedic Nathan Yerxa can’t help but take in the view most days. Looking out over the landscape here, it’s as if the sky and the land seem to merge.Yerxa is a paramedic for North East Mobile Health Services and stationed in Jackman, Maine, a small town in the northern part of this state home to about 700 people. From the edge of town, you can see the Canadian border in the distance, and on any given day, paramedics here are responsible for covering an area that’s approximately the size of the state of Rhode Island.“The remote landscape and difficult terrain make it difficult to bring resources to the area,” Yerxa said, as he drove through town in a Ford pickup truck that’s been converted to an all-terrain ambulance.Like rural communities across the country, getting patients to an emergency room in this area is a difficult, often time-consuming task. The closest ER is about 70 miles away, a trip that can sometimes take close to two hours. While Jackman does have a community health center, the facility can’t perform many emergency procedures most larger hospitals can.So, in an effort to save time and lives, the emergency room is being brought to Jackman in an innovative new way, harnessing technology and the expertise of paramedics likes Yerxa.“I think it’s one of those situations where what’s old is new again,” he said.The idea is a Critical Access Integrated Paramedic program. Paramedics here are receiving more training in critical care. While at the same time, that pickup truck Yerxa relies on is being outfitted with tools like satellite internet and a satellite phone. First responders even have heart rate monitors that can send data wirelessly to a doctor anywhere.The concept is simple. Using technology, paramedics can instantly connect to a doctor no matter where they take a call. From stitches to ultrasounds, paramedics in this region are bridging the rural healthcare gap by instantly connecting via video chat to a doctor who may be hours away.“It is in many ways like a high-tech home visit that you might have seen 60 years ago, but we’re also bringing urgent care services with us,” Yerxa explained.Finding new ways for rural communities to connect is a key component to the program's success.Nationwide 25 million people don't have access to broadband.The COVID-19 pandemic has only magnified the issue. In Maine alone, 36,000 telehealth calls were made last month up from 650 the same time last year. Many times, though, patients and doctors have trouble connecting because of poor internet connections.Town manager Victoria Forkus pushed hard for the program.“We were in a way forced to implement this new program early because of COVID,” she said while sitting inside Jackman’s town offices.The whole program is costing Jackman and surrounding communities about 0,000 a year to implement. Some of the money will come from a tax increase, which is no small feat in a town where the median income is just ,000.But out here, the program has overwhelming support.“What’s the dollar amount on one of my neighbors’ lives? What’s the cost of saving a community member? It’s priceless,” Forkus added.The concept of the program is gaining attention across the state.Jim Rogers, with Health Connect Networks based in Maine, is lobbying Congress hard to expand rural broadband connectivity. It’s something he says is now more imperative than ever given the pandemic.“People in these rural communities just don’t have adequate internet to support a telehealth consult,” he said.As for Yerxa, he sees the program as something other rural communities across the country can emulate.“Hopefully, we can now provide 24-hour coverage to patients in any of these rural locations.” 3770
