SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police say a Chula Vista woman killed her mother in a Mission Valley office building, then shot herself days later with the same gun.Homicide detectives investigated the 911 call from an office building on Camino Del Rio South in Mission Valley on July 22.Officers found Maria Kelly, 66, dead inside her office.RELATED: SDPD: Mother murdered, daughter deadKelly's 34-year-old daughter, Crystal Vasquez, drove to the location hours later.Vasquez went into the restroom of a nearby business and was discovered dead of a gunshot wound.San Diego Police said Vasquez shot and killed her mother the afternoon of July 20. The next day, Vasquez cashed a ,000 check written from her mother's bank account.Police told 10News the Vasquez likely shot her mother after being confronted about stealing money from the family business. Vasquez embezzled money from her mother's Mission Valley accounting business for about a year, according to police. Police believe Vasquez shot herself after learning about the possibility of cameras at the building's entry and exit.A forensic examination confirmed the handgun Vasquez used to commit suicide was the same gun used to kill Kelly.  Video surveillance also showed Vasquez was in the office with Kelly at the time of the murder. 1330

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — St. Augustine High School, an all-boys Catholic school in North Park, has filed a lawsuit against California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state officials to allow the school to reopen for in-person instruction.The school says that after holding its summer school and athletic programs in-person for more than 400 students without any reports of COVID-19 cases, they are seeking to stop the state's enforcement against in-person classes during the pandemic this fall."At Saints, we don’t believe remote learning is sufficient to provide a quality education our students are entitled to and our families have come to expect," said Principal James Horne. "We are confident we can open our school safely, consistent with CDC and San Diego County health guidance. We ran a safe and successful summer school program and believe it is an indicator that we can safely return to school in the fall."The school says it adhered to the county's public health guidelines and safety measures during its summer programs, including required to face masks, social distancing requirements, air conditioning systems using UV lights to sanitize the air, and buildings and classrooms being regularly sanitized with an electrostatic disinfecting mist system.St. Augustine also said a distance learning option would still be offered for families who don't want to send their children back to school in-person."After appeals from many families to return to the classroom, Saints is pursuing the best way to offer opportunities that are the right fit for all its students and families," the school said. 1604

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Pride is calling for video submissions that will be incorporated into their live-streamed event in July, in lieu of in-person gatherings. They are requesting people submit 15-30 second videos describing what Pride means to them. “We’ve learned as a movement and community that sharing personal stories is what pulls at hearts and minds and can help shape policy,” said Fernando Lopez, the Executive Director of SD Pride. But he also said he wants to make sure that even though the event will be virtual, it still creates a place for the LGBT community to express themselves. “What we’re doing is asking everyone to participate,” said Lopez. “One of the things that makes Pride special and unique is that we ask everyone from all walks of life to come together and celebrate diversity and to be together in community. We’re trying to do that but do it in a different way.” The videos will be incorporated into their live broadcast on July 18. As a year-round educational and advocacy organization, Lopez said SD Pride has already moved a lot of its events online. In doing so, he said they’ve actually been able to expand their reach. “When we’d have an educational forum, you’d get 40-80 people in a room,” he estimated. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Smoke from a fire burning in Mexico is visible throughout San Diego Thursday. The blaze is burning roughly five miles into Mexico amid hot, windy conditions. According to Cal Fire, the fire poses no threat to the U.S. at this time. The agency said, however, it is monitoring the situation and will send a response if the fire threatens San Diego County. A red flag warning was issued for much of San Diego County through Friday. “Winds will get stronger during the day today peaking overnight into Friday early afternoon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released Monday the name of a man who was shot and killed in Paradise Hills.911 dispatchers got a call about a shooting in the 2400 block of Calle Gaviota Friday about 10:30 p.m., police said.Officers went to the location and found Dustin Bridwell, 37, suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso.
