The White House has flatly rejected the House Judiciary Committee's request for documents in its sweeping investigation into possible obstruction of justice and abuses of power, accusing the Democratically-controlled committee of seeking to recreate the special counsel investigation to harass the President.White House Counsel Pat Cipollone sent a letter Wednesday to House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler arguing that the committee's request for documents was illegitimate."It appears that the Committee's inquiry is designed, not to further a legitimate legislative purpose, but rather to conduct a pseudo law enforcement investigation on matters that were already the subject of the Special Counsel's long-running investigation and are outside the constitutional authority of the legislative branch," Cipollone wrote."Congressional investigations are intended to obtain information to aid in evaluating potential legislation, not to harass political opponents or to pursue an unauthorized 'do-over' of exhaustive law enforcement investigations conducted by the Department of Justice," he added. The letter adds yet another layer to the escalating feud between the White House and House Democrats over their numerous investigations into the Trump administration and President Donald Trump's businesses and finances.Trump has already declared that his administration will fight all of the House subpoenas — several of which are now being fought in court. The Judiciary Committee voted last week to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt for not providing the full Mueller report and evidence and the Ways and Means Committee has issued a subpoena for Trump's personal and business tax returns.Nadler and other House Democratic leaders are now raising the prospect they will hold numerous administration officials in contempt at the same time as part of a package to highlight the Trump administration's stonewalling of Congress. Some Democrats are also talking about invoking Congress' so-called inherent contempt powers to fine or jail those who defy congressional subpoenas.Cipollone's letter, which was first 2133

Tired: Mr. Monopoly. Wired: Ms. Monopoly. One of America's most recognizable board games is getting an upgrade. Hasbro is debuting a new game celebrating women's empowerment -- Ms. Monopoly, marking the first time in Monopoly history when a new mascot will be featured on the cover of the game. The twist? In Ms. Monopoly, female players will get more money.Unlike the classic game, women will collect 240 Monopoly bucks when they pass "go," while male players will collect the usual 200. The idea is to create a game where women make more than men, the first game to do so, according to Hasbro. It's "a fun new take on the game that creates a world where women have an advantage often enjoyed by men," the company said in a statement. "But don't worry, if men play their cards right, they can make more money too."That's not the only difference, though. Instead of buying property, players will invest in inventions created by women -- things like Wi-Fi and chocolate chip cookies. But no worries -- mainstays such as jail, luxury taxes and chance cards are still included. The announcement of Ms. Monopoly comes a few weeks after the company received criticism for Monopoly Socialism -- a tongue-in-cheek game that sparked debate for its flippant handling of socialism. Hasbro also debuted Monopoly for Millennials in 2018, poking fun at stereotypical millennial trends such as avocado toast and veganism.Ms. Monopoly will be available for pre-order beginning September 10. 1483

Three suspects have been identified in the murder of Joshua Brown, a witness in the trial of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, who was convicted of murdering her neighbor Botham Jean.Jacquerious Mitchell, Michael Mitchell and Thaddeous Green have been named as suspects in the shooting death of Brown, authorities said Tuesday.Jacquerious Mitchell, 20, is in custody, Assistant Chief of Police Avery Moore said at a news conference Tuesday. The other two suspects are being sought.According to Dallas police, the suspects traveled from Alexandria, Louisiana, to purchase drugs from 28-year-old Brown. According to Jacquerious, Green, 22, contacted Brown to purchase drugs, authorities said. The two got into a physical altercation, police said. Jacquerious exited his vehicle and Brown shot him in the chest. Jacquerious fell and heard two gunshots, police said at the press conference. Jacquerious told police Green shot Brown twice in the lower body. Green then allegedly took Brown’s backpack and the gun used to shoot Jacquerious and they sped off. Michael Mitchell, 32, was named as the driver."Jacquerious is driven to the hospital and where he is now in police custody," Dallas police said. "Warrants will be executed for him and the other two suspects for Capital murder."Police said they confiscated 12 pounds of marijuana, 149 grams of THC cartridges and ,157 in cash from Brown's apartment after executing a search warrant.Authorities also clarified some rumors swirling around Brown's death."The rumors shared by community leaders that Mr. Brown’s death was related to the Amber Guyger trial and that DPD was responsible are false," police said. "We encourage those leaders to be mindful because their words may jeopardize the integrity of the city of Dallas and DPD."Brown was found in a parking lot outside an apartment building with multiple gunshot wounds two days after Guyger was convicted of murder. Guyger fatally shot her neighbor, Jean, in September 2018. The former police officer testified that she thought the apartment she entered was her own and that Jean was an intruder. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison.Brown lived across the hall from Jean at Dallas' South Side Flats apartments, where Guyger killed Jean. He was a key witness in Guyger's trial. 2307

The Trump administration has upgraded its already dire warning to Americans against all international travel as the coronavirus outbreak spreads. At the same time, the State Department disclosed the first positive cornovirus test in a Washington-based employee and announced new restrictions the issuance of passports to U.S, citizens. The department on Thursday issued a new travel alert urging Americans not to go abroad under any circumstances and to return home if they are already abroad unless they plan to remain overseas. It then said passport applications for U.S. citizens at home and abroad would be severely curtailed.“The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19,” it said in the new advice. “In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. U.S. citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel.”Until the upgrade, the department’s advice to U.S. citizens was to “reconsider” all international travel under what is known as a “level three” alert. The global “level four” warning was unprecedented as such alerts are generally reserved for specific countries embroiled in conflict, natural disasters or where Americans face specific risks. However, the upgrade will likely have little practical effect because it is not mandatory and there are now limited transportation options for international travel. The only way to ban Americans from going abroad would be to invalidate the use of U.S. passports for such travel, a bar that is currently in place only for North Korea. In addition, the main impact of State Department travel alerts is to cause insurance companies to increase premiums or cancel travel policies for group and individual tours, many of which had been scrapped even before the alert was raised to level three earlier this week. The department has already advised Americans that many U.S. embassies and consulates abroad are operating with reduced staff and hours due to the COVID-19 outbreak and that services for Americans in need of assistance are limited.Full Coverage: 2286
