SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The 2019-2020 cruise season is officially underway in San Diego, and the Port of San Diego expects thousands of visitors to the region, having a significant economic impact on the city.The Port has 104 cruise calls scheduled, which is up from last year's numbers. Approximately 338,000 passengers will be on the cruises and Port officials say each home ported call has an average of million in economic impact."That doesn't just mean spending money on food and shopping, but that can be maintenance, repairs and things to the ship," said Adam Deaton, with the Port's cruise business development."It's a great, great uptick for San Diego's economy," said Deaton. "We're not in the summer so it's kind of the down season, so cruise is a great pick me up for the winter and fall months."The season began Tuesday with the arrival of luxury ship Le Soleal, from French Cruise company, Ponant.Also this season, Holland America, Disney Cruise, and Carnival Cruise Lines will be featured. Carnival has not been in San Diego since 2011 and its return was much anticipated.The Carnival Miracle will be at the Port starting in December for 12 trips including Mexican Riviera, Hawaiian Island, Baja Mexico and Panama Canal cruises.Starting October 4, Disney Cruise Line will offer 16 cruises from the Port of San Diego. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The family of Crystal Odom filled a San Diego courtroom Monday morning to hear a judge sentence the man convicted of killing Odom in a drive-by shooting in 1995. The judge sentenced Aswad Walker to 15 years to life for Odom's murder, plus three years for gang ties. He was convicted of second-degree murder back in February for Odom's death. Two previous trials had ended in hung juries. Odom's parents spoke before the sentencing. Her mother called Walker a coward and told him he would get what he deserved in prison. When Odom's father, James Odom, spoke, the family became very emotional, tears and sobs could be heard throughout the courtroom. Odom said a burden was lifted off his shoulders and that the sentencing marked an end to a long ordeal. At the time of the shooting, Crystal was with her then boyfriend and her 10-month-old daughter. Her daughter and boyfriend were unhurt. 959

San Diego is weighing major new rules that would ban people from living in their cars near schools and homes.The proposal would block anyone from living in their cars within 500 feet of a school or residence, and also prohibit them from living in their cars on most other city streets between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.San Diegans living in their cars have had free reign since a judge ruled in August that its current laws were too vague. That's led to concerns from some residents in beach areas, who say they have seen people drinking in cars, as well as urinating and defecating on neighborhood streets. "I used to feel very safe walking around throughout La Jolla, Pacific Beach and everything, and there's a lot of times I don't feel as safe as I used to," said Sarah Bonesteel, a Crown Point resident. The issue of in-car living has grown along with San Diego's high housing costs. The car is one of the last pieces of shelter a homeless person may possess, Mayor Kevin Faulconer noted Tuesday. At a news conference, the mayor announced that the city would open an additional parking lot for people to legally sleep in their cars. It will be in the overflow lot across from SDCCU Stadium, providing access to housing and other services."The goal for every person or family staying here will be to access resources to get back into long-term housing," Faulconer said. Meanwhile, the city's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee will consider the citywide restrictions Wednesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As San Diego County awaits state guidance on how to move forward with reopening different sectors, a local church continues to defy public health orders by operating inside.Under the current public health order, religious services may continue outside with social distancing in place.Awaken Church was sent a cease and desist letter from the county’s public health officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, for operating inside in July.A month later, the church is defying the health order again by resuming indoor operations on Sunday, August 23, the church’s 15th anniversary. Services and locations are posted on the church's website. A video on the church’s website shows pastors Jurgen and Leanne Matthesius speaking about why they have decided to reopen. The two said it was time to reopen and that “fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost; it’s essential.”In the video, the pastors say that the governor and county officials continue to keep churches under strict regulations, which prevents them from meeting the needs of their congregation.“Sadly, we’ve had five people connected to our church that have lost their lives, not from the virus but because of the virus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The man accused of raping and torturing a woman in his home in Rancho Penasquitos faced a judge today. 32-year-old Uber driver, Seyed Hassan Kaboli pleaded not guilty to 12 counts of sexual crimes. Kaboli peaked through his holding cell, as the judge announced his fate. San Diego Police said Kaboli bound, raped, and tortured a woman, multiple times at his home in Rancho Penasquitos on May 19th and 20th. Sky10 footage showed the victim being consoled by the police on Monday, and she said she ran naked to escape 24 hours of brutal misery. The next day, Kaboli was arrested just north of National City. 10News obtained a copy of the criminal complaint, explaining Kaboli’s 12 felony charges. They include:(5) Forcible oral copulation (2) Rape(1) Rape by a foreign object(1) Torture(1) Assault with great bodily injury(1) Sexual battery(1) False imprisonmentThe complaint also suggests that there may be another person involved in the crimes. Under count three, it reads Kaboli “inflicted aggravated mayhem and torture on the victim and another person.”Under count eleven, it reads “said person was unlawfully restrained by said defendant and an accomplice.”In the courtroom, neither the defense nor the district attorney would comment on a possible third party.Still, the judge issued a protective order for the victim— a woman, whose relationship was not disclosed. But Kaboli’s defense attorney said she was not his Uber customer. “There is no prior relationship,” Kaboli’s attorney, Ryan Tegnelia said. “He is not denying that they came into contact with each other on the date of the incident. But before that, they did not have any relationship.”Tegnelia said Kaboli’s family describes him as an introverted man who keeps to himself. They said they are shocked at his arrest. “This obviously came completely out of left field for them, caught everybody by surprise,” Tegnelia said. The judge set Kaboli’s bail amount at 0,000.
