This is the cloth mask cleaning recipe recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Either throw the mask in your washing machine using the warm water setting and dry it on high heat. Or hand wash it using one-third cup of bleach per gallon of lukewarm water. Let it sit for five minutes, rinse, then fully air dry.Mike Christman is a respiratory therapy instructor at Milwaukee Area Technical College."I've seen people walking about in the stores with visible stains on the mask that tells you A. It hasn't been washed and B. It's probably trapping a lot of bacterial or virus material you probably don't want on the mask," Christman said.Christman knows a thing or two about face masks and the protection they provide. At the start of the pandemic, he was in New York City helping treat COVID-19 patients."What gets on it? What is it besides our own sweat or maybe our own saliva?" Consumer Investigator Kristin Byrne asked Christman."What they are finding is on a lot of the exterior part of the mask, on the outside part of the mask, anything that you are ventilating through that is kind of stuck and contained on that mask. So pollen, dust, dust mites they're finding," Christman continued. The worst-case scenario would be coronavirus. While the CDC recommends you wash your cloth mask regularly, other experts recommend washing them every day.In our TMJ4 News twitter poll, if they wash their cloth masks every day. Out of nearly 600 votes, 27 percent said yes and 73 percent said no.Washing schedule aside, Christman says people need to pay attention to how they're cleaning. He said people need to be conscious of what part of the mask they touch."You want to be careful as you remove the mask in case you did come into contact with someone that is COVID positive that you don't touch the exterior of the mask and then touch your nose and mouth before washing your hands," he explained. So, Christman explained you should only touch the ear loops or mask ties when you remove it from your face for cleaning. And another tip -- if you wash your mask in your washing machine, you can use one of these mesh bags to prevent your mask from getting tangled with other pieces of laundry. Some masks come with care instructions so follow those to get the longest use. This story was first reported by Kristin Byrne at TMJ4 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 2369

TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — The woman crawled under first, squeezing face down through a gap dug under the border fence. The space is only a few inches high, and her feet kicked dust into the air as she wiggled. Next was her 3-year-old daughter, dressed in a pink sweat suit, pushed through to the California side on her back and feet first by a man who stayed in Mexico. The mother anxiously urged them on. "Hurry," she said. "I'm right here. It doesn't matter if you get dirty."Fifteen seconds later, the mother and daughter from Honduras were together in the U.S. And soon a U.S. Border Protection agent approached on an all-terrain vehicle to take them away in custody.U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday that the San Diego sector has experienced a "slight uptick" in families entering the U.S. illegally and turning themselves in to agents since the caravan of Central American migrants arrived in Tijuana two weeks ago.Thousands of migrants on the Mexico side of the border are living in crowded tent cities in Tijuana after a grueling weekslong journey through Mexico on foot and hitching rides with the goal of applying for asylum in the U.S. Frustrated with the long wait to apply, with the U.S. processing 100 requests at most each day, some migrants are trying to cross over clandestinely.Rachel Rivera, 19, told The Associated Press that Honduras had become unlivable. Moments before flattening herself under the fence, she said she was slipping through to the U.S. in an attempt to "give a better life" to her daughter Charlot. An AP video journalist also witnessed more than two dozen migrants scale a fence between Mexico and the U.S. on Monday evening. Once across, entire families raised their hands before border patrol agents who arrived swiftly in white trucks. It's unclear where the families were taken from there. On a typical day before the caravan arrived in Tijuana, U.S. border patrol agents in the San Diego area detained about 120 or so people trying to cross the border illegally from Mexico.President Donald Trump issued a proclamation in November suspending asylum rights for people who try to cross into the U.S. illegally. Rights groups question the legality of that proclamation.U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Ralph DeSio said the U.S. was trying to deter illegal crossings by issuing the proclamation. The U.S. has an established process for asylum seekers to present themselves in an "orderly" manner at a port of entry, DeSio told AP via email. "When people choose to ignore that process, they put themselves in danger and, in the case of families, they choose to put the lives of their children at risk."Trump took to Twitter again Tuesday to drum up support for a better border wall, arguing that the expense would be less than the U.S. incurs each year due to illegal immigration.People mainly from Honduras but also from El Salvador and Guatemala formed the caravan to Tijuana, seeking safety in numbers while crossing Mexico to avoid criminals and the fees demanded by the gangs that prey on migrants. Dozens of the migrants have told AP they are fleeing poverty and searching for a better life, while many also tell of harrowing violence and death threats back home.Margarita Lopez, a migrant from Honduras, said she would definitely jump the fence to the U.S. if she got the chance. But in the meantime, Lopez stood in line Tuesday to request a humanitarian visa from Mexican officials that would allow her to live and work in Mexico for a year.Standing nearby, Luis Fernando Vazquez, a migrant from Guatemala, said he won't make a run for the border."I'm not like that," he said. "I prefer to work, to behave well, here." 3691

This is harassment pure and simple. This ‘inquiry’ by NYC democrats is 100% motivated by politics, publicity and rage. They know very well that there’s nothing here and that there was no tax benefit whatsoever. These politicians are simply ruthless.https://t.co/4dQoDzQlRX— Ivanka Trump (@IvankaTrump) November 20, 2020 327

They have become the Holy Grail of cleaning supplies this pandemic year: Lysol and Clorox wipes. Trying to find them is often an exercise in futility.Throw in Windex spray, Scrubbing Bubbles shower cleaner, and Formula 409, and they round out the list of popular disinfecting products that are nearly impossible to find in stores these days.Coleman Henderson, owner of a house cleaning company, said he often has to tell homeowners he can't come out that week because of disinfectant shortages."I have to postpone jobs because I can't get cleaning supplies." Henderson said. You can sometimes find these items for sale on Amazon (from third-party sellers) or eBay, but you may have to pay two to three times the retail price, if you can find them at all."People are really struggling right now, " said Grace Brombach, of the consumer watchdog group U.S. PIRG. "The last thing that they need to worry about is going online and finding the products that they really need to keep themselves safe at ridiculous prices."National brands remain in short supplyStan Beck, owner of a hardware store, said that even though national brands like Windex or Johnson are hard to find, off-brand products are often just as good."This is a basic product, like Windex, just a different brand," he said, pointing to a shelf of Brillo window cleaner in his store. Brillo? Yes, they make window cleaner, and he says it works as well as Windex. Some items, though, are in such short supply that even generic versions are hard to find. For instance, toilet paper is now plentiful, but paper towel supplies remain tight. Why? A CNN report says manufacturers worked overtime all summer to produce toilet paper, but did not boost paper towel production to the same extent. The result?Grocery stores now have enough toilet paper (though they are limiting sales again), but not enough Bounty or Scott paper towels. What you can doKaren Mallory is the manager of a Do-it Center. She has a shelf stocked with cleaning products that looks like a throwback to 2018.During our visit, she had Windex, Mr Clean, Spic n' Span, even a collection of N95 face masks, something that was impossible to find for five months.Mallory said many people don't realize that local hardware stores often have a much better selection than grocery or big box stores because of their group buying power, and the fact that fewer shoppers visit them for cleaning items. She said she can find almost anything, except those Holy Grail items: name-brand disinfecting wipes."We've tried ordering Lysol wipes," she said. "Absolutely. We're trying to keep up on what supplies we can. Some things are just not available."It's the same situation at grocery stores like Kroger. The spokeswoman for the nation's largest grocery chain, Kroger, Erin Rolfes said "our suppliers are continuing to work extra hours to keep up with the ongoing customer demand," but said shoppers buy out wipes and disinfectants the moment they are put on the shelves. So what can you do?Visit your grocery store midweek, first thing in the morning, when those wipes and other products are put out.Purchase store brands, or off brands, when you find them, especially when it comes to wipes and toilet cleaners.Visit your local hardware store, and get to know the manager. Some will hold products for you if you ask.Check Amazon frequently. But U.S. PIRG says resist the urge to pay double or triple the price on eBay, because that encourages sellers to charge even more. And report gouging to Amazon customer service.
