FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Police apprehended a kangaroo that was on the loose Thursday morning in Fort Lauderdale.Residents living near North Andrews Avenue and 13th Street reported seeing a runaway kangaroo hopping through their neighborhood.Fort Lauderdale police officers arrived and, with the help of wildlife officers, were able to leash the kangaroo and guide the animal into the back of a police cruiser.It was not immediately known how the kangaroo made its way to Fort Lauderdale, but the marsupial avoided a trip to the slammer.Instead, the Australian tourist was taken to the South Florida Wildlife Center. Former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin admitted Friday that it hurt "a bit" to hear Sen. John McCain say he wished he picked Connecticut Sen. Five days after the tragic bus crash in Saskatchewan, Canada involving a junior hockey team's bus, the team's trainer, Dayna Brons, died on Wednesday as result of her injuries. Brons, 25, became the 16th confirmed fatality from Friday's bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos. "Dayna will be forever remembered for her joyful smile, and her passion and love of sport," her family said in a statement.The team was traveling from Humboldt to its playoff game in Nipawin, Saskatchewan when a semi-trailer plowed into the bus, which carried 29 people. TSN reported that as of Wednesday, 10 people remain hospitalized from last week's crash.The Broncos play in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, which is made up of players aged 16 to 21, who compete at junior hockey's second-highest level. Also on Wednesday, the league opted to continue with its playoffs. Nipawin, which held a 3-1 series lead over Humboldt, will advance to the league finals to take on Estevan. FORT MYERS, Fla., - A new class is coming to Florida Gulf Coast University and it's raising eyebrows.The class is called ‘White Racism’ and will be offered in the Spring. “I thought the name was a little dramatic,” student Jamar Arrindell said. “It's been a growing topic of conversation."The topic took center stage at an open forum Thursday night titled “Race, Immigration and White Supremacy in the Post-Obama era.”“I saw the flyer for the event and had to come,” said Vanessa Fernandez, a former FGCU student. "I think it's important for us to talk through it so we can understand each other's sides”Dr. Ted Thornhill, a sociology professor, will be teaching the course."I understand why some people might be uncomfortable by the title," he said. "But in order to move the conversation forward people have to get comfortable with getting uncomfortable." Thornhill said the new course wasn’t developed in response to racially charged messages found around campus last fall, but to give students a broad idea of the history of racism, white supremacy and how to challenge racism in today’s society. “Silence is not the answer," he said. "Conversation, knowledge, education is the answer and that's what I'm hoping to provide students with the opportunity to gain.”The course was expanded from 35 to 50 students due to high demand, and it’s currently at capacity. 1402
