SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -Business owners in San Ysidro worry that yet another month of restrictions on non-essential travel between the US, Mexico, and Canada could close them for good. For the eighth month in a row, the land borders between the United States and its neighboring countries to the north and south will remain closed to non-essential travel to help limit the spread of COVID-19.Monday U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed the extension would last through at least December 21st.Geneva Gamez and her family run Tacos La Fronterra in San Ysidro. "It's kind of been a roller coaster ever since. Everything keeps changing," said Gamez. The agreement continues the hold on tourism and recreational trips, but essential business and trade are not affected. Crossing for educational or medical reasons is also permitted. "You don't get much traffic down there unless somebody is going into Mexico or coming back from Mexico," said Gamez.Gustavo De La Fuente is the executive director of the Smart Border Coalition. He said the impact of the restrictions is far-reaching." You're looking at a little over 700 businesses that could close definitely, and that's actually very worrisome," said De La Fuente. The holiday season is when many of the business owners make most of their money."This is the time of the year when 80% or more of their sales are coming for the entire year, their sales are most of their sales are concentrated in these last 5, 6 weeks of the year," said De La Fuente. Gamez hopes people remember the family-owned businesses when they're doing their holiday shopping. "It's affecting part of the San Diego community that's somehow you know isolated, cause it's so close to the border and it's often forgotten, if people could just make the effort if they can, to drive down there or somehow support small businesses in the area, they'd be doing a lot of good for that part of the community." 1946

SANTA ANA, Calif. (CNS) - Orange County supervisors Tuesday voted to declare Aug. 24 as Kobe Bryant Day.Bryant was born on Aug. 23 and wore the number 24 in his playing days, said Orange County Board Chairwoman Michelle Steel, explaining why she settled on Aug. 24 as the date to honor the former Lakers great who died Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash that also killed his daughter and seven others.Bryant also wore the number 8 during his first several seasons in the NBA.Steel said Bryant, who lived in Newport Beach, was a "treasured member of our community," who "inspired so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up."Supervisor Don Wagner, in an apparent reference to Bryant's 2003 sexual assault civil case in Colorado, which Bryant ultimately settled, said the former NBA star had his ups and downs in his lifetime."Kobe Bryant's life, like each one of us who ever lived, presents moments to celebrate and to condemn," Wagner said. "Kobe, like all of us, faced challenges, challenges of his own making and challenges thrown at him by life, that he overcome. Today, we celebrate the effort in overcoming those challenges."Wagner added, that, "if the bad in any life were to forever disqualify" then no one would be able to celebrate "the good.""So we strike a balance, and on balance here the good recognized in the resolution brought here is worth celebrating," Wagner said. 1405

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) -- Kelley Keatly and her husband were walking in their San Marcos neighborhood Wednesday morning when something caught their attention. They noticed a red sticker stuck to an electrical box. When they looked closer, they saw a message of hate, one that read: “The symbol of white resistance.”The sticker included a link to a website filled with hatred - towards Jews, African Americans, and the LGBTQ community.ABC 10News is not identifying the group.“Really I just see it as an act of pure evil, and it has no place in my community, it has no place in any community,” Keatly said.Keatly took the sticker and posted an image of it on a neighborhood Facebook page. Melissa Burgess saw the post and then found four - on electric boxes and traffic lights, including ones near San Elijo Elementary and Middle schools, where her children attend.“I came home, I was shaking just from anger and pain and hurt and just all of that from having seen that here in my community,” she said. Then, even more neighbors found the stickers, including on the back of Stop signs. The stickers come after a recent spate of hate-inspired incidents in the county, including people wearing swastika face masks to grocery stores, and another driving with a Nazi flag.Tammy Gillies, who heads the San Diego Anti-Defamation League, says it’s vital to report all incidents.“You have one person that can be radicalized on the Internet, one person that is drawn to look at a website through these fliers or these stickers and goes down a wrong path, so it is very concerning,” Gillies said. She alluded to last year's deadly shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue, allegedly carried out by a 19-year-old radicalized online. The Sheriff's Department says a total of seven stickers were located. It is investigating and asking anyone with information to contact the San Marcos station at (760) 510-5200.The San Marcos Unified School District says it inspected its facilities and found no evidence of stickers. 2010
