SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the first time in San Diego Zoo history, an echidna baby, commonly referred to as a puggle, has hatched at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Zoo officials say the tiny animal is estimated to have hatched on Feb. 14, 2020. Echidnas only breed once a year, before the mother lays an egg about the size of a grape and keeps it in a pouch in her abdomen. After seven to 10 days, a tiny puggle smaller than a jelly bean hatches. It attached itself to hairs within the mother's pouch, where it feeds on milk. Around six to eight weeks old, the puggle develops spike spines and the mother places it in a specially made nursing where she feeds it every three to six days.The puggle's mother, named Orange, and father, Shaw, also reside at the Safari Park. The tiny, spiny Australians species will spend most of its day sleeping, growing, and developing in its burrow.“We are thrilled and excited to welcome our first-ever echidna puggle at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park,” said Savanna Smith, wildlife care specialist, San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “It is an honor to care for this little one, as we learn more about this species’ reproduction through this puggle’s hatching. Mom and puggle are doing extremely well, and we will continue to monitor the puggle’s progress until it is ready to venture out on its own.”Echidnas are one of only two Australian mammals that lay eggs, the other being a platypus. They are notoriously difficult to breed in managed care, the zoo adds, making this even more momentous for the zoo.The sex of the animal has yet to be determined.It is expected that the young puggle will start venturing out on its own at about six to seven months old. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fire crews battled a small fire that threatened structures in Del Dios Thursday afternoon. According to Cal Fire, the blaze started in the area of Del Dios Highway and Toyon Canyon Road on the west side of Lake Hodges. The fire burned roughly three acres and threatened two structures before fire crews were able to stop the forward rate of spread. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Four San Diego businesses, including two restaurants and two gyms, have filed a lawsuit seeking an emergency injunction to stop the latest shutdown orders.Under the red tier, both sectors were open for indoor operations as limited capacities. Restaurants were allowed to serve people inside at 25 percent of the normal capacity, and gyms at only 10%.On Saturday, purple tier restrictions will go into effect, meaning businesses like restaurants and gyms must shutdown indoor services completely and move outside.Cowboy Star Restaurant & Butcher Shop, Home & Away Encinitas, Fit Athletic Club, and Bear Republic filed the lawsuit against California Gov. Gavin Newson and the County of San Diego, as well as other state and county officials arguing that the closures go against their rights.The lawsuit states that Newsom and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) lack the authority to impose the continuing restrictions on California businesses.All four businesses detail the numerous health and safety measures they’ve added to provide a safe environment for staff and customers during this pandemic.“I think it’s pretty clear that the law is on the side of governmental authority to try to get this under control,” said Jan Ronis, an attorney with the Law Offices of Ronis & Ronis. “Why they continue to file lawsuits… it’s beyond me.”Ronis is not involved in this case, but said when the pandemic began, he reviewed emergency legislation available to the government at both state and federal levels.“These laws have been in the book for decades, and governments have used them sparingly, and quite frankly think they’re valid as surprised as I was by the breadth and scope of government authority once these emergency declarations are declared,” said Ronis.He said he had seen similar lawsuits filed across the state during the last several months, and most don’t hold up in court.“I really feel sorry for the businesses, but the fact is this is a monumental health crisis,” said Ronis.Dr. Wilma Wooten, San Diego County’s public health officer, recently asked for the CDPH to allow the county to stay in the red tier. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Employees at a Little Caesars franchise location in Logan Heights say their paychecks are bouncing and management is not responding to their concerns. The workers say the problems started in March, and they told 10News they've received paychecks, only to have them bounce a few days later and racking up banking fees every time. The employees 10News spoke to, from the National Avenue location, did not want to be identified. When they spoke out to supervisors, the employees claimed they were told to not to bother upper management. Other times, they said, they were left in the dark with no response. Employees identified the owner as Tony Bith, saying he owns at least a dozen Little Caesars locations throughout San Diego County.
