SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- South Korea plans to launch a joint research with China and Japan on the feasibility of a free trade agreement (FTA) among the three Northeast Asian countries, South Korea's foreign ministry said Wednesday.According to a report by the ministry, the country, which has been seeking an economic integration of the Northeast Asian region by creating favorable conditions for FTAs, will kick off a joint study with the countries, in which government officials, scholars and business representatives will participate.Along with the trilateral FTA, the country will also continue to push for settling separate bilateral trade agreements with China and Japan, the ministry said in the report.Currently, South Korea has free trade agreements with Chile, Singapore and the European Free Trade Association, as well as a similar pact with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.Recently reaching a free trade deal with the European Union, the country also wrapped up its free trade talks with India, settling the so-called comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) in August.With respect to the free trade deal with the United States, signed in June 2007, both countries are waiting for legislative approval.South Korea is also seeking similar trade deals with Australia, Canada, and Mexico.

BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Han Zheng, Mayor of Shanghai, confirmed here Sunday he would lead a delegation to visit Taiwan in April to promote the upcoming World Expo.The confirmation by Han himself came on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's supreme legislature."I have been expecting for long to visit the Treasure Island of Taiwan," Han said. "Though the exact date has yet to be decided, I hope to make it early April."The mayor said he would take his Taiwan visit as a chance not only to promote the World Expo, which is slated to open on May 1, but to further boost Shanghai's economic and cultural exchanges with Taiwan.Taipei mayor Hau Lung-bin led a delegation to visit Shanghai in June 2008, drawing attention from the media for the improvement of cross-Strait relations between Taiwan and the mainland.

PARIS, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy met with hundreds of Chinese representatives during a reception at Elysee on Tuesday, the first celebration of Chinese Spring Festival at the presidential palace.At the reception, which aims to co-celebrate the lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, the president greeted happy new year to around 800 Asian attendees, mainly Chinese-French and Chinese visitors living in France.Sarkozy said the relations between France and Asian countries, including China, was becoming closer and closer. BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- China named and shamed more than 10,000 workshops and selling groups in dust and poisonous material-related industries last year in a bid to fight against occupational diseases, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).The figure was revealed at a national meeting on food safety and sanitation supervision here Monday amid an ongoing campaign on regulating workshops and selling companies in the fields of mining, quartzite processing, gem processing, stone processing, smelting and cement production among others.The campaign, starting in last August, was jointly launched by the State Administration of Work Safety, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and All-China Federation of Labor.Earlier this month, 152 workers at an electrical and lighting company in south China's Guangdong Province were found to have suspected mercury poisoning, showing symptoms such as headaches, hair loss, joint aches and shivers.According to the company, all six production lines of the workshop used liquid mercury, but some workers seldom took the trouble to wear a mask at work.Vice Health Minister Chen Xiaohong said at the meeting that the ministry is currently working with other departments to set up regular meetings at ministerial level on the prevention and control of occupational diseases.The MOH is also aiming to set up a network against occupational diseases at grassroot level while providing basic job-related health services for migrant workers, said Chen.

DAR ES SALAAM, March 17 (Xinhua) -- "China is not throwing its weight amid China-Africa cooperation, though China's influence is getting stronger as an emerging power," a senior Tanzanian media official said here on Wednesday.Mkumbwa Ally, Deputy Managing Editor of Tanzania Standard Newspapers which published the official Daily News and Sunday News among others, made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Xinhua."The cooperation between China and Africa including Tanzania is based on mutual-benefit, that's not the 'Power matters the most' policy by some western countries but the way to cooperate with others," Ally said.China's assistance to African countries has no strings-attached, which was preferred by African countries, the senior Tanzanian media official said, mentioning the assistance from China to build the Tanzania-Zambia Railway in the 1970s."The big project of Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) railway was implemented with China's assistance, which helped the two African countries, especially the land-locked Zambia a lot in development and once was the main model of transportation in Tanzania," Ally noted.He added that China's assistance to Africa was brotherly based and the fourth ministerial meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Nov. 8-9 and committed to enhance China-Africa cooperation with "people-centered" development, that is "development must look at people's needs".Besides assistance, China-African cooperation is also growing in business sectors, for example, Chinese construction companies built many projects in African countries with the same quality but lower costs, which is good for Africa, meaning that the African government can spend less for the same quality, the senior Tanzanian media official noted."Economists saw China as an emerging power, which has a lot of room for growth.
