SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about drinking and driving ahead of the busy Fourth of July holiday weekend.The department says it will be conducting increased DUI patrols on Saturday, July 4 and over the course of the weekend.The department also plans to hold an impaired driving checkpoint in North County Friday night.Last year, deputies arrested more than 1,300 people for impaired driving. So far in 2020, 387 drivers have been arrested for driving under the influence, the department says. "No one should ever drive under the influence," said Sheriff Bill Gore. "Throughout the pandemic, deputies have continued to enforce impaired driving laws. Don't drink and drive." 734

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Humane Society warned pet owners this week to be safe with their animals while exercising after a dog collapsed in hot weather. A dog named Joey was half a mile down the Three Sisters Falls trail in Descanso Saturday when he started panting heavily, a sign of heatstroke. “Dogs are lower to the ground, absorbing heat from above and below,” according to the SDHS. Their paws are also sensitive to hot dirt or pavement, experts say. RELATED: Check 10News Pinpoint WeatherPets should not be exercised heavily in temperatures above 70 degrees, according to the SDHS. Temperatures in Descanso reached a high of 86 Saturday, according to 10News meteorologist Megan Parry.The SDHS Emergency Response Team took Joey to Animal Urgent Care in Escondido, where he was treated for heat exhaustion and separating pads. Joey recovered and returned home with his owner. Three Sisters Falls trail in East County is an arduous hike for humans which can be dangerous during summer. In central San Diego, warning signs reminding owners not to hike with dogs in hot weather are posted at the popular Cowles Mountain trail. 1144

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Port of San Diego is kicking off another season of Waterfront Summer service.The service, which is now in its seventh season, provides transportation along the waterfront for per day.The shuttle, provided by the Port, will connect visitors and residents to businesses and attractions along the waterfront.According to the Port, the shuttle runs on a loop every 20 minutes from the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina on Harbor Island to Harbor Drive Bridge with several stops in between.The shuttle will run every day from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the summer season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three San Diego County high school football teams qualified for the state finals but may not have enough funding to attend the tournament, school officials said Monday.Lincoln High School boys just finished what coach David Dunn is calling a “Cinderella season”. The team has never before qualified for the event.“Just to have the experience and the opportunity to do it, and let alone be the first team to do it, it means a lot,” said T'ray Kirkland, senior player.The Lincoln High Hornets have had a slim roster, injuries, even a forfeited game. They beat Mira Mesa for the CIF championship.“There have been games where we really had to step up. You just see how much heart each and every person on this team has,” said Kirkland.“Their willingness to compete is different than a lot of the other teams that I've had before," Coach Dunn said.The boys have also been competitive academically. The team averages a 3.1 grade point average with as many as eight players holding a 4.0. Lincoln High is scheduled to play Menlo Atherton this weekend in the San Francisco suburb of Redwood City. The game won’t happen if the team doesn’t get more money. Although the state pays for some of the expenses, the team needs the community to step up.“We need this opportunity to really display that the Southeast produces athletes, great young men, and character,” said Kirkland.San Diego High and Escondido’s Orange Glen High also qualified for the state finals and need financial help.
