Saturday marks the 87th anniversary of the "Star-Spangled Banner" being named the national anthem — and the song hasn't seen this much controversy since being anointed the official song of the United States in 1931.On top of becoming a political platform for athletes and politicians alike, the anthem has seen some of its most unique performances in the past year — most notably, Fergie's controversial rendition at the 2018 NBA All Star game.But Fergie's version of the "Banner" is just one of many controversial renditions of the song. As it celebrates it's birthday as America's anthem, let's revisit a few more notable renditions.Jose Feliciano — 1968 World SeriesFeliciano was among the first artists to deviate from the traditional playing of the anthem — and he did it in front of a nationwide audience. With the country already divided by the Vietnam War, Feliciano's rendition outraged many. Newspaper reports called Feliciano's performance "disgraceful," and some called him a "hippie."Despite the controversy at the time, Feliciano was invited back to Detroit to sing the anthem 44 years later before a Tigers playoff game, where he received unanimous applause.Jimi Hendrix — Woodstock (1969)Prior to Hendrix's performance at Woodstock, it was hard to imagine the national anthem being played on an electric guitar. Now, it's considered one of the most iconic renditions of the anthem ever performed.Roseanne Barr — San Diego, 1990Comedienne Roseanne Barr is not known for her singing voice, and it showed during her rendition of the anthem prior to a baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Cincinnati Reds. She screeched her way through the anthem, and capped it all off by spitting on the ground and grabbing at her crotch.Barr maintains her act was a joke, and told the Washington Post that she wasn't trying to respect the anthem or the flag with her performance. President George Bush disagreed.For her part, Barr maintains her version of the anthems was better than Fergie's.Whitney Houston — 1991 Super BowlWith the country newly entangled in a foreign war and security tensions high at the world's biggest sporting event, Houston delivered perhaps the most stirring and inspiring live performance of the anthem in the song's history. Even after her death, Houston's performance at the Super Bowl remains one of her most played songs.Jack Black — Los Angeles, 2011Black is most known for his slapstick comedy, so it must have been strange for fans of the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks step to the mic for the anthem in 2011.However, Black is one half of the musical duo known as Tenacious D, and showed off his pipes in the 2003 comedy "School of Rock." Whether or not the Staples Center crowd was ready for it, Black went out and delivered a stirring rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner."Jesse McGuire — 2013 NFL PlayoffsThough the national anthem is played and sung live dozens of times each day, it's not often that an instrumental version of the anthem is played solo. McGuire, a renowned trumpeter, has played that anthem dozens of times at some of America's biggest sporting events, but his 2013 performance at a 2013 NFL playoff game between the Carolina Panthers and the San Francisco 49ers reminded viewers that sometimes, the anthem is at its best on a lone trumpet. Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. SEDGWICK, Colo. – A man suspected of killing three members of a Kentucky family who were found dead Monday was arrested Monday afternoon near a small town in northeast Colorado.Edward Siddens, was arrested around 4:20 p.m. in Sedgwick, Colorado, which is just south and west of borders with Nebraska.He was wanted by Kentucky State Police out of Allen County, Kentucky. In connection to the deaths of Jimmy Siddens, his wife, Helen Siddens, and their son, Jimmy Siddens II. It's unclear how Edward Siddens might be related to the deceased.According to Kentucky authorities and local media reports, a county water employee was checking the family’s meter Monday and found two bodies on the ground. Authorities found another body nearby.The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office says it was notified shortly after 4 p.m. Monday that Siddens as in the county.Siddens was believed to have been driving a stolen vehicle when he was found by deputies in the town of Sedgwick. The sheriff’s office says deputies were involved in a “short low speed pursuit” with Siddens before he was arrested without incident.The sheriff’s office confirmed that Siddens was the man arrested Monday, and said it was working with Kentucky state police. Saudi Arabia's King and its de facto leader have called the son of slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi to express their condolences, Saudi state media has reported.Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud made a phone call to Salah Khashoggi, the eldest son of deceased journalist Jamal Khashoggi, to express "his condolences to the family and relatives of the late Jamal Khashoggi," the state-run SPA news agency reported Monday.Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also called the younger Khashoggi, who "expressed his sincere thanks" to the Crown Prince for his thoughts, according to SPA.Salah Khashoggi, who lives in the Saudi city of Jeddah, has been unable to travel out of Saudi Arabia for several months, as his passport had been invalidated, according to sources close to the family. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The new Mexican president is hoping a new deal with three Central American leaders will stop or slow the flow of migrants seeking asylum in the United States. Andres Manuel Lopez-Obrador signed the new deal within hours of taking office. The deal with Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, promises to create a fund that would fight poverty, create jobs and make sure migrants feel safe in their home countries. It will also create a re-integration program for those traveling with the caravan who wish to go back.University of San Diego professor, Ev Meade, says this deal looks good on paper but no one will know for sure until more specifics are released. Professor Meade has been traveling to Tijuana to meet and speak with the migrants. He says most leave because of instability. "What I hear from a lot of people is indirect effects of violence, so it's someone that might say I can't afford to feed my family but when you start asking them questions about what they do, the business that they worked for, why they were laid off, the violence is always there. It might be one degree, two degrees, three degrees of separation but the violence is always there," says Meade. It is still unclear how much funding will go towards those Central American countries but Meade says it will be years before we see the effects of the deal. "This kind of progress, when you talk about big structural issues, doesn't happen in a month, or three months or a year, I mean, it takes time," says Meade. 1528

(KGTV) - An abandoned church in San Ysidro will become the site of 10 new affordable housing units, as well as a cultural center.The non-profit group Casa Familiar is spearheading the project, called "Living Rooms at the Border.""What we want to do is build a culture corridor from SY Blvd through the alley, all the way to the Beyer Trolley Station," says Community Development Director David Flores.The church was built in 1927 and is known in the neighborhood as "El Salon." Casa Familiar bought the property in 2000 and has worked to develop it since then.The proposed 14,000 square foot development will turn it into a cultural arts center. Around it, Casa Familiar will build 10 units of affordable housing, a community garden and patio, office space for support services and programs, and walkways connecting the alleys to main streets.Flores says it will connect the community to its past and future."There's history. There's richness. There are stories that families love sharing about San Ysidro and growing up here. It's going to be a space that will bring back a lot of those memories."As part of the plan, the exterior of the church will stay in place. So will much of the filaments inside."People would tell us stories about coming here for Sunday services, or doing their first communion, even weddings, people get married here," says Flores. "It's a really special, cool place, where we thought, why demolish everything. This is a really important community icon that we can restore."The project is the latest effort to revitalize the neighborhood. A new park and playground are just a half block away from the church, and plans are underway to build a new San Ysidro library two blocks away.The new homes will vary in size. There will be three one-bedroom units, three two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom units."This is not a lot of units, it's 10 units," says Flores. "But the whole idea behind this project is to build in the service, support programs that families need.""Living Rooms at the Border" will cost around 8.25 million dollars and includes improvements to the surrounding infrastructure.Casa Familiar says they got a 0,000 seed grant from Art Place America. They were able to pair that with a 2-for-1 matching grant from the PARC Foundation. That gave Casa Familiar more than a million dollars to begin the project. New-Market tax credits and financing will help pay for the rest.They hope to start construction in July and have it finished by next summer.  2533
