SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hate crimes throughout San Diego County and across the state are rising at an alarming rate, according to new reports.Hate crimes between 2015 and 2017 rose 27 percent in San Diego County alone, a new report published in Law Enforcement Quarterly states.Statewide, hate crimes rose 44 percent between 2014 and 2017.A report from California’s Attorney General shows that San Diego County saw 95 hate crime incidents in 2017. That compared with 84 hate crimes countywide in 2016 and 72 in 2015.According to documents, anti-Semitic hate crime rose nearly 27 percent from 2016 to 2017 statewide. Hate crimes involving racial bias increased 16 percent within the same amount of time.The statistics come amid recent tragedies around the country, including a shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh Saturday that left 11 people dead. RELATED: Sign outside UCSD Jewish student center defacedThe rise in hate crimes also coincide with recent events in San Diego. In June of 2018, a sign celebrating the Hillel Jewish center was defaced with an anti-Semitic message. The message painted on the sign, which included the F-word, had lettering resembling the Nazi swastika. The sign, which sat at the corner of La Jolla Village Drive and Torrey Pines Road, announced the Glickman Hillel Center, a million project the City Council approved in 2017 after more than a decade of legal opposition. RELATED: Swastikas, rude slurs carved into vandalized Ocean Beach carAlso this year, an Ocean Beach woman made a shocking discovery when she found her can vandalized and covered rude speech, including swastikas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time in nearly 100 years, an integrated company of male and female recruits at MCRD San Diego are about to begin their journey into becoming Marines. These future Marines will be led by graduates from MCRD's first ever integrated Drill Instructor Course. Now the mission of the course is to screen, train, and further develp leadership and command presence of selected Marines, in order to successfully perform duties of a drill instructor."We are taking them from the leadership skills, that they had in the fleet, and further refining them here," says Major Lynn Stow, Director of the MCRD San Diego Drill Instructor Course. "The drill instructor's goal is to successfully transfer recruits into United States Marines."Fifty-seven Marines are scheduled to graduate from the grueling 57 day course, and for the very first time, the graduating class will include 3 females."Getting the opportunity to come here was almost like divine intervention, everything just kind of fell into place," says student Sargent Stephanie Fahl. "To come here and make it this far, I'm really proud of myself."These future drill instructors at MCRD are looking forward to changing the lives of young 17 and 18-year-old recruits. "The change I'd like to instill in the recruits is to obviously maintain that discipline that's a staple of recruit training,"says student Sargent Stephanie Jordi. "I'd also like to inspire them and teach them how to become leaders even from that lowest level." Student Sargent Ikea Kaufman feels being a drill instructor is about teaching recruits how to be men and women."There is more to life than social media and all that. There is actually responsibility."And while Drill Instructor Course is very rigorous, the payback is immense. "You have contributed to the mission of making Marines. You have been able to take these recruits from day one and transform them into Marines. They are going to look up to you as their role model." 1991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Friday, small businesses throughout San Diego came together against a proposed ban of Styrofoam and single-use plastics while proponents are holding their ground, citing environmental impacts.Some San Diego County cities voted to ban the Styrofoam containers at restaurants as part of an effort to clean up the environment.Those in favor of the ban say it will help keep debris out of the ocean. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Halloween is quickly approaching, which means thousands of San Diegans will choose that perfect pumpkin to display or carve.Across the county, several pumpkin patches will be open throughout October, waiting to match pumpkins to owners. Several patches offer more than pumpkins as well. Over at Bates Nut Farm, guests can enjoy a petting corral, pony rides, live entertainment, and delicious BBQ and kettle corn this month in Valley Center. Oma's Pumpkin Patch in Lakeside features hay rides, games, and a large play area.
