SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Researchers at the UC San Diego School of Medicine released a study Friday looking into loneliness in elderly adults, and found it can be overcome in a variety of ways.The researchers noticed what appeared to be an epidemic of loneliness among adults in senior living or retirement communities, and sought to identify why. According to the study, 85% of the interviewed residents reported moderate to severe levels of loneliness.Dr. Dilip V. Jeste, senior author of the study and senior associate dean for the Center of Healthy Aging and professor of psychiatry and neurosciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine, said loneliness can be deadly.``Loneliness rivals smoking and obesity in its impact on shortening longevity,'' Jeste said. ``It is a growing public health concern, and it's important that we identify the underlying causes of loneliness from the seniors' own perspectives so we can help resolve it and improve the overall health, well-being and longevity of our aging population.''RELATED: Resource guide: keeping seniors protected from abuseJeste said he found few published, qualitative studies about loneliness among older adults, particularly in the independent living section of senior housing communities.He said several personal and environmental factors impacted the study subjects, all 100 of whom lived in an independent housing section of senior- living centers in San Diego.``Loneliness is subjective,'' Jeste said. ``Different people feel lonely for different reasons despite having opportunities and resources for socialization. This is not a one-size-fits-all topic.''One seemingly common factor for most older adults was loss. Losing spouses, siblings and friends can be difficult at any age, but as contacts from younger years dwindle, Jeste said he found that many residents found making new friends difficult and not as fulfilling as those with whom they grew up. Another common thread was loss of purpose.``We heard powerful comments like, 'It's kind of gray and incarcerating,'' Jeste said. ``Others expressed a sense of 'not being attached, not having very much meaning and not feeling very hopeful' or 'being lost and not having control.'''RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Taking care of aging parentsSome older adults found ways to cope effectively with loneliness, the study -- published in the Jan. 10 issue of Aging and Mental Health -- found. Performing a good act for someone else or coming to terms with aging are broad but effective techniques to cope with loneliness, the study found.``One resident told us, 'I've accepted the aging process. I'm not afraid of it. I used to climb mountains. I want to keep moving, even if I have to crawl. I have to be realistic about getting older, but I consider and accept life as a transition,''' Jeste said. ``Another resident responded, 'I may feel alone, but that doesn't mean I'm lonely. I'm proud I can live by myself.'''According to the National Center for Health Statistics, by 2029, more than 20% of the U.S. population will be over the age of 65. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council's Active Transportation and Infrastructure Committee unanimously voted today to send a set of regulations on dockless electric scooters and bicycles to the full council.Should the full council vote in favor of the regulations, scooter riders would be banned from parking scooters and bicycles in hospital and school zones, beach area boardwalks, the perimeter of Petco Park and the north and south legs of the Embarcadero. Riders and scooter company employees would also only be able to park scooters in groups of four in designated areas on the street, with at least 40 feet between groups. Scooter speeds, currently a maximum of 15 mph, would be slowed to 8 mph in high-traffic areas like Spanish Landing, Petco Park and Balboa Park, and 3 mph on the Embarcadero and the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade. Scooter companies would use geofencing technology to limit parking abilities and speeds in specific areas, technology that Bird already uses in areas like the Santa Monica Beach Bike Path.The city would also require scooter companies to apply for a six-month operational permit with a to-be-determined fee and pay 0 per scooter or bike each year. Scooter companies could only renew permits in January or June, bike each year. "I've seen a lot of underage riders operating scooters and Idon't see any provision in this ordinance that specifically requires operators to do something to stop children from illegally riding scooters.''Representatives from scooter companies Bird, Lime, Razor and Lyft all expressed support for the regulatory package, while some residents framed the proposal as not doing enough to ensure the safety of San Diego pedestrians."As the creator of e-scooter sharing, we have seen first-hand how vital it is for our transportation solution to be integrated thoughtfully into a community,'' said Bird spokeswoman Kyndell Gaglio. ``We take the importance of protecting the safety and welfare of our riders and community very seriously and so we commend San Diego on its efforts to develop clear and impactful regulations.''Mayor Kevin Faulconer originally proposed a similar set of regulatory concepts in October, which the council's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee approved while requesting a fleshed-out version. Faulconer's proposed the current version of the regulations last week after months of pressure from residents concerned about public safety and from transportation advocates who didn't want the scooters banned outright.The city attorney's office is also in the process of responding to a lawsuit against the city and the scooter companies for failing to stop residents from using the scooters on the city's sidewalks. 3806

  

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club announced new and enhanced safety protocols for horses and jockeys Wednesday which will be in effect for the Del Mar race track's 80th racing season which begins July 17.The initiatives include a mandate for a five-person review panel to analyze each horse's racing, medical and training history to ensure each horse is safe to race and a ban on the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication fewer than 48 hours before a race or a workout. Previously, NSAIDs were allowed up to 24 hours before a race or workout.The approximately 1,850 horses stabled at Del Mar will also be subject to increased random testing and analysis, veterinary observation and stable security measures to make sure horses are jockeys are following track rules.Riding crops will be prohibited during morning workouts and could be restricted further as the track continues consulting with the California Horse Racing Board and the Jockey's Guild.RELATED: What you need to know about Opening Day at the Del Mar RacetrackIn addition to its enhanced safety protocols, the DMTC announced the creation of an advisory committee of trainers, veterinarians, jockeys, racing surface maintenance experts and track management to continually discuss how to make Del Mar as safe as possible.``Del Mar continues to strive to provide the safest environment possible for our equine and human athletes for both racing and training,'' said DMTC CEO Joe Harper.``We have a responsibility to implement the best practices for safety and welfare and the further responsibility to educate the public about these practices and about the extraordinary levels of care provided to our equine athletes.''The club announced the increased safety measures at a time when horse racing is under unprecedented criticism from animal rights activists. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill last week allowing the CHRB to suspend racing licenses and race days at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia without public notice due to an unprecedented wave of horse deaths and fatal injuries at the track.A total of 30 horses died during Santa Anita's racing season, which ran from Dec. 26-June 23. The deaths led to calls for increased safety measures and an indefinite closure of the track while state officials investigate the cause of the deaths.The DMTC dealt with a similarly deadly racing season in 2016, when 17 horses died during Del Mar's racing season. After remaking its dirt track with the help of race track consultant Dennis Moore and implementing additional safety measures like adding a radiology and ultrasound facility along the track's backstretch, only five horses died during Del Mar's 2017 season and six during its 2018 season.After instituting the changes, Del Mar has been rated one of the safest horse racing venues in the U.S., tallying only 0.79 horse deaths per 1,000 starts last year, according to the Jockey Club Equine Injury Database. According to the DMTC, the national average was 1.68 among tracks that reported their fatal injuries.``Significant thought, due diligence and stakeholder input went into the crafting of the reforms we are implementing this summer,'' said Tom Robbins, the DMTC's executive vice president of racing and industry relations.``All of us recognize our responsibility to ensure the safety and welfare of the horses that race and train here. We are very appreciative of the cooperation from industry stakeholders including our owners and trainers.''The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is scheduled to begin its summer season July 17 and continue through Sept. 2. Races will be held Wednesday through Sunday each week with a sixth day of racing during the season's final week. 3708
