Three weeks into the 2019 racing season, both attendance and overall betting handle are down at Del Mar. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says attendance is down about 5 percent, and handle is down 14 percent compared to 2018. Thoroughbred Club CEO Joe Harper says the issues surrounding the 30 horse deaths at Santa Anita have turned off some fans. "We've got to prove to our racing fans that we're doing the safest things we can to keep these horses healthy," he said. So far, three horses have died at Del Mar this season, all during training (two died in a freak accident when they collided head on before the second day of racing). Harper says the track has increased safety protocols that have been helping keep horses safe. "There's vets out there every morning keeping an eye on," he said. "They see a horse that maybe doesn't look that good, isn't warming up enough to where he'd be safe, we get him off the racetrack."Harper says the attendance and betting handle are on track with estimates. He says he hopes to see them both go back up over time. Through three weeks - 15 days of racing - the track is averaging about 13,089 fans per day. 1156

There are about 6,000 restaurants in Queens County, according to the Queens Chamber of Commerce — and if indoor dining doesn’t resume, up to 3,000 may never open again.“For the last six months, it’s been very hard for everyone in the diner business, in the restaurant business. Especially for us,” said John Thanosopolous, who owns the Atlantic Diner in Richmond Hill.There are now multiple lawsuits against the city and New York state over not permitting indoor dining at city restaurants, despite every municipality around them being permitted to do so.“This is the knockout punch for us. This is the lawsuit. We didn’t want to do this. This is not us. We are workers,” said Rob De Luca, who owns De Luca Restaurant in Staten Island.Mayor Bill de Blasio did not address the status of indoor dining whatsoever during his Tuesday press briefing, though days ago, hinted an announcement could be coming soon.Governor Andrew Cuomo said other cities and towns were allowed to have diners indoors because their compliance was better than New York City’s.Without explicitly naming the mayor, the governor said local enforcement failed when bars were first permitted to re-open months ago. Ultimately that led state government to create a statewide task force of inspectors to take up the issue. But Cuomo said that task force is spread thin.“If you go to indoor dining, you are roughly doubling the number of places that you're going to have to monitor,” said Cuomo.The governor said the city should be pulling resources and inspectors from the NYPD, or from any and all regulatory agencies it has, and until it does, New York City restaurants cannot welcome its customers back inside.That is not what thousands of restaurant owners across the city want to hear.As for De Luca, he believes this disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable in the industry.Mitch Schwartz, the Mayor’s Director of Rapid Response and Deputy Press Secretary, issued this statement Tuesday evening:“Careful public health guidance. TORRANCE, Calif. (CNS) - Police Monday announced the arrest of a 47-year-old parolee accused in the shooting deaths of three men during a fight at a bowling alley in Torrance.The arrest of Reginald Wallace of Los Angeles, who had been on parole since 2017 following a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon involving a firearm, was announced by Torrance police Chief Eve Irvine at a Monday afternoon news conference at police headquarters.Wallace was arrested early Sunday and was being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, according to sheriff's inmate records. Officers responded to a shots-fired call just before midnight Friday at Gable House Bowl, 22501 Hawthorne Blvd. Three men were pronounced dead at the scene and two others were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. Two other men sought medical attention on their own.Irvine said a fight involving a few people grew into a brawl involving as many as 15. At some point, Wallace pulled a handgun from his pocket and fired into the crowd, Irvine alleged, adding that he was believed to have been the only shooter.Witness Dana Scott previously told reporters that a group of women got into a fight inside the building, then some men got involved. About a minute later, gunshots erupted, Scott said.Another witness, who refused to give his name, said a fight erupted and he heard nine gunshots.Wes Hamad, a 29-year-old Torrance resident, said he saw a ``huge fight'' break out that lasted about five minutes, blocked the entrance of the bowling alley and devolved into ``complete chaos.''``I grabbed my niece and started running toward the far end of the bowling alley,'' he said. ``As we were running, we heard 15 shots.'' Killed were Michael Radford, 20, and Robert ``Tank'' Meekins and Astin Edwards, both 28 and best friends. Meekins leaves behind a 5-year-old son, whose godfather was Edwards.``When I go home and tell him that his daddy's not coming back, it's going to break his heart because he's a daddy's boy, always has been,'' said Meekins' mother, Anglean Hubbard. ``And I wonder the person that sat up here and took all of these people's lives, how is he sleeping? How is he dealing with that? He took somebody's father. Somebody's son. I just want justice for my son and all the people in there.''Relatives of all three victims told reporters they believed the men were killed while trying to break up the fight. THORNTON, Colo. – Police in Wyoming have arrested a Thornton, Colo. man after he walked into their station and told them he had killed his girlfriend in Colorado and driven her body across state lines to Wyoming.Thornton police said Jonathan Eugene Akin, 22, was in custody of the Powell (Wyo.) Police Department after being arrested for investigation on a first-degree murder charge on Tuesday. Jail records indicate he also faces a felony charge of mutilation of a dead body.Thornton police say they were called by Powell police just before noon Tuesday and asked to conduct a welfare check on a woman at an apartment at the Champion’s Park Apartments. Powell police told Thornton police that Akin had come into their department claiming his dead girlfriend was in his vehicle.While Thornton officers were checking the apartment, Powell police confirmed the woman’s body was found inside Akin’s vehicle. Thornton police confirmed the apartment was a crime scene, Sgt. Ernie Lucero said in a news release.Akin is being held at the Park County (Wyo.) Sheriff’s Office while he awaits a hearing to be extradited back to Colorado to face charges. The woman who was killed has not been identified.Powell is located in northwest Wyoming approximately 140 miles west of Sheridan.Lucero said the investigation into the woman’s death was ongoing and asked anyone with information to call 720-977-5069. 1402
