A controversial mural depicting images of slavery and dead Native Americans at a San Francisco high school will be left in place but covered with solid panels. The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education voted 4-3 to cover the "Life of Washington" mural at George Washington High School without destroying it.The vote on Tuesday amends a June decision to paint over the mural "unless doing so would result in undue delay," the school district said in a news release. The mural was created in 1935 by Victor Arnautoff and has stirred controversy because of depictions such as enslaved Africans working in cotton fields on George Washington's estate and white settlers stepping over the body of a dead Native American, according to a fact sheet posted on the school district's website."Where we all agree is that the mural depicts the racist history of America, especially in regards to African Americans and Native Americans. It is important that we all share the agreement and acknowledgement of racism, discrimination, and the dehumanizing of people of color and women in American history," SFUSD President Stevon Cook said in a press release. The mural will no longer be on public view at the school but will be digitized so that art historians can access it. 1287
"It’s an 800-number; the phones are staffed by experts."Fans of The West Wing are quite familiar with the famous scene when President Bartlet was surprised that there is an 800-hotline to ask questions about how to prepare a turkey. Decades later, the Turkey Talk Line has evolved into more than a hotline. The hotline still exists, but there are other ways to get your critical turkey questions answered by experts. Here are the ways to get help:Butterball Skill for Amazon Alexa: Users can simply say, “Alexa, ask Butterball…” to enable the skill. Once enabled, just ask the Butterball skill your cooking questions and hear trusted Talk-Line experts share answers. Users can even watch how-to videos on compatible Alexa-enabled devices (Echo Show, Echo Spot and Amazon Fire TV).Text (844-877-3456): With nearly one in three first-time cooks saying they’d text the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line for cooking help, it only makes sense that, for the fourth year in a row, the Turkey Talk-Line offers text support in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving. 1-800-BUTTERBALL (1-800-288-8372): Turkey Talk-Line experts will be available this season through Dec. 24, 2019, to answer questions and assist all holiday cooks.How-To Videos: Need a visual guide? 2019 will be the year of growing rifts.Populists will claim they have the answers; traditionalists will say nothing is wrong they can't fix.But be sure of one thing: Our old, comfortable order is going to change — and not in an incremental way that we can more or less handle. While 2019 might not be the year we actually tip, it seems inconceivable that the balance between those who are happy as we are and those who think the world no longer works for them is going to shift. We are more populous. Our need for resources is greater. Our expectations more immediate. And while our capacity for change is elastic, 624
