On social media, Nikolas Cruz did not appear to be a peaceful man. He made quite clear his desire to perpetrate the exact type of violence of which he now stands accused. Before he allegedly committed one of the worst mass shootings in US history at a Parkland, Florida, high school on Wednesday, police officials say Cruz wrote social media posts so threatening he was twice reported to the FBI.He hurled slurs at blacks and Muslims, and according to the Anti-Defamation League, had ties to white supremacists. He said he would shoot people with his AR-15 and singled out police and anti-fascist protesters as deserving of his vengeance. Just five months ago, he stated his aspiration to become a "professional school shooter."Yet on the morning of the massacre, the family that took the 19-year-old into their home didn't notice anything terribly strange about the young man's behavior, the family's attorney said Thursday. The only thing abnormal was that he didn't get up for his adult GED class. Normally, the father would take him to class on the way to work, but when they tried to wake Cruz up Wednesday, he said something like, "It's Valentine's Day. I don't go to school on Valentine's Day," according to the lawyer."They just blew it off," attorney Jim Lewis said. "This is some 19-year-old that didn't want to get up and go to school that day, and (they) left it at that."The family took Cruz in last year after his adoptive mother died. Cruz was depressed, Lewis said. The family's son knew Cruz, so they opened their home, got him into a GED class and helped him get a job at a Dollar Tree, the lawyer said."He seemed to be doing better," Lewis said.Prior to the mass shooting that left 17 adults and children dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Cruz had exchanged texts with the son, who was a student there.Lewis characterized the texts as, "How you doing? What's going on? Yo, you coming over later?" That kind of stuff. Nothing to indicate anything bad was going to happen."Cruz had a gun. The family knew that, but they had established rules. He had to keep it in a lockbox in his room. Cruz had the key to the lockbox, the attorney said."This family did what they thought was right, which was take in a troubled kid and try to help him, and that doesn't mean he can't bring his stuff into their house. They had it locked up and believed that that was going to be sufficient, that there wasn't going to be a problem. Nobody saw this kind of aggression or motive in this kid, that he would ever do anything like this," Lewis said. Writing on the wall? 2590

One U.S. president spoke with Sen. Susan Collins several times ahead of her announcement Friday that she would support Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court -- and he's been out of office for nearly a decade.Former President George W. Bush called a number of senators in recent weeks, and had several conversations with Collins to reassure the key Republican vote about Kavanaugh's character and temperament, a person familiar with the matter tells CNN.Kavanaugh's confirmation was thrown into doubt after a tense Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in which Christine Blasey Ford alleged the Supreme Court nominee had sexually assaulted her when they were in high school in the 1980s. Kavanaugh has denied all the allegations against him.Collins supported an additional FBI background check into the accusations, which stoked speculation that she might then break with Republicans and vote against Kavanaugh's nomination, but the results of that investigation -- along with Bush's calls -- paved the way for her support Friday. 1047

Officials broke ground on a new national memorial in Washington, D.C. Thursday to honor the millions of Americans who served in World War I, 100 years after the United States got involved in the conflict. The memorial will be built in Pershing Park, a small plaza about a block away from the White House.More than 100,000 Americans died in the war and more than 200,000 others were injured. Now, nearly 100 later, there are no living survivors from World War I."It's a national tragedy that the millions of veterans of the Great War have not been memorialized in our capitol,” said Terry Hamby, commissioner of the United States World War I Centennial Commission."There was so much sacrifice in World War I, it's time for America to build a memorial to the forgotten war." Hamby’s grandfather fought in the war. His uncle died in it.“It means a lot to me, personally, because when you have a memorial and you can go stand in front of it, the emotion burst forth,” Hamby said. In Washington, D.C., other American wars are honored with a national memorial, including World War II, as well as the wars in Korea and Vietnam. The Centennial Commission was established by Congress in 2013 and authorized to create a new national-level memorial in the nation's capital, to honor the men and women who served.Denise Rohan, National Commander of the American Legion, expressed support for the memorial and the veterans it will honor.“Their legacy is one of freedom and heroism. Some paid the ultimate price. The American Legion supports this overdue memorial because the world must forever remember the story of those men and women who liberated a continent. Sadly, it was not the war to end all wars. But, by studying their legacy, tyrants should be on notice that America will not allow evil to go unchallenged,” Rohan said. The goal is to build the memorial by Veterans Day of 2018, which would mark the 100th anniversary of the agreement that brought an end to the war. While this will become the first national monument to World War I in Washington, D.C., there is a National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, dedicated to honoring those who served in the war. 2218

On Friday afternoon, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expanded it's warning to consumers to cover all types of romaine lettuce, now including whole heads and hearts of romaine lettuce, in addition to chopped romaine and salads and salad mixes containing romaine.Romaine lettuce has been linked to the growing number of people hospitalized due to a multistate E. coli outbreak. 53 people have been infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli in 16 states since March 13, the CDC said. Thirty-one of those ill have been hospitalized. Five of them developed a type of kidney failure associated with an E. coli illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening. No deaths have been reported. The following steps were suggested by the CDC Friday: 813
