XI'AN, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains have left at least 15 people dead and 54 missing in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, flood control authorities said late Monday.The lives of more than 1.33 million people were disrupted by the heavy flooding in 23 counties and cities in the southern regions of the province, said officials in the provincial flood control headquarters.Torrential rains have cut off roads, flattened homes, destroyed power facilities and flooded farmland in the worst-hit Ankang City, causing economic losses estimated at 881 million yuan (129 million U.S. dollars), said officials.In the mountainous county of Langao in Ankang, three people were reported dead and 17 still missing after landslides and mud-rock flows struck several villages late Sunday.Continuous rainfall has battered many Chinese provinces and regions over the past week.In neighboring Sichuan Province, flash floods and landslides left at least 26 people dead and more than 30 missing.China is also preparing for the worst Yangtze flooding in more than a decade as water levels in the upper and middle sections of China' s longest waterway continue rising.

HANGZHOU, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Three people are dead and two others still buried Friday after a rain-triggered landslide in east China's Zhejiang Province.The landslide hit Taolin Village of Chun'an County at 5:00 a.m. Friday as villagers were being evacuated from their homes. The area had been pounded by rain since Thursday afternoon, said Tong Xiaowei, deputy county head.Debris swamped two residential houses, burying six residents and two others assisting with the evacuation, Tong said.Three of the eight people were injured and were receiving treatment at hospital, Tong said.About 300 fire fighters, policemen, medical personnel and villagers had joined in the rescue work, he said.Provincial meteorological authorities forecast Thursday that heavy rain would persist for another week. Chun'an County was among the worst hit by the rain.Also Friday, rescuers from south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region recovered the bodies of three people from rubble after a rainstorm damaged two homes in Dongma Village of Rongshui Miao Autonomous County around 3 a.m., according to the county's flood control and drought relief headquarters.In the far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, an exploration worker was suffocated to death Thursday after he was buried by a rain-triggered landslide on a hill in Qira County, said a spokesman with the county government Friday.At around 2:40 p.m. Thursday the landslide of mud-and-stone hit a tent where five exploration workers with the Xinjiang Xindi Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. were taking a rest, said the spokesman.Four workers managed to escape while one was found dead after being dug out half an hour later, he said.The civil affairs bureau in northern Hebei Province said Friday a thunderstorm with sporadic hail hit Zhangjiakou City from Wednesday to Thursday, leaving two dead and three missing.The storm hit six counties in Zhangjiakou, with 56,200 residents suffering losses and hundreds of houses collapsing. BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The world's most populous country is expanding its social security net as China's major social insurance program reached a new high for the number of people covered, official figures show.The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said on Thursday that the nation's urban pension insurance covered 235.5 million people by the end of 2009, an increase of 16.6 million over the beginning of that same year.In addition, 26.47 million migrant workers were also included, which was 2.31 million more migrants than at the start of 2009.Officials note that pension fund revenues topped 1.15 trillion yuan by the end of last year, up 18 percent year on year. This followed the government raising the monthly pension income for business retirees for the fifth time between 2005 and 2009 to 1,225 yuan (180 U.S. dollars) a person.Also, the country's basic urban medical insurance covered 401 million people in 2009, of which 219 million were urban dwellers and 43.35 million were rural migrant workers.Additional figures showed that unemployment insurance covered 127 million people while those carrying work injury insurance reached 149 million.
