KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Plaza Academy teacher Justin Gillespie is bringing hip hop production to his classroom.The class is called ‘The Beat Academy of KC’ and is the 5th and 6th hour at school for students.“It's the only program in Kansas City that teaches kids how to make hip hop production,” Gillespie said.Gillespie launched the program back in August.“It's been something I've done in my personal life,” Gillespie said. “I've been a professional musician for 15 years and it's been super rewarding.”From beats to rhythms, students take their creativity to a whole new level.“I'm excited to go here everyday,” freshman Thom Van Til said. “I get joyful when I come here, like it helps me calm down,” 8th grader K’ron Lyons said.The class is producing more than just quality hip hop, it’s also producing higher grades and more engagement from students.“Justin would probably say you cannot perform because your grades is bad, so he encourages me to like make sure I do my work,” Lyons said.Students plan to perform what they’ve been working on at the Beat Academy Block Party alongside Kansas City hip hop artists like Ces Cru, JL & Info Gates, Adrian Truth and Suli4Q. The school is raising funds to build a recording studio this summer, to make more courses available to students next year.  1328

KERNVILLE, Calif. About 45 miles to the west of the quake's epicenter, San Diegan Jose Blanco was watching television on the couch in his parents' home. His three children were playing outside."Banging, jolting, up and down ... eyes were shaking. Just seemed surreal," said Blanco.Blanco says he jumped off the couch and then froze, trying to wait out the shaking."Wow, is this really happening? Just shocked ... Seemed like a good minute. Seemed like forever," said Blanco.When the home finally stopped moving, Blanco ran to his children and found them safe. A few things fell and a few cabinet doors opened, but there was no major damage. In the first few hours after the quake, he felt more than 10 aftershocks. (AP) — Authorities say a St. Louis rapper who went by the stage name Huey was killed in a shooting that also wounded another man.St. Louis County police said in a news release that the shooting happened just before 11 p.m. Thursday in Kinloch.Police identified the man who was killed as 32-year-old Lawrence Franks Jr., known by fans as Huey.The Kinloch native was best known in the rap community for his 2006 debut single, “Pop, Lock & Drop It." Just when it seemed like the fury surrounding the chaplain?for the US House of Representatives was over.As House members were wrapping up votes Tuesday night, a remarkably heated exchange erupted on the floor, with one congressman shouting, aggressively pointing his finger, and -- at one point -- banging his fist on a table as he sharply criticized another member.Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley of New York attempted to offer a resolution to form a committee to investigate the forced resignation of the Rev. Pat Conroy, the House chaplain. Crowley, a Catholic, made a similar motion last month?after questions arose over the resignation.As his resolution was in the process of being tabled due to GOP opposition on Tuesday, Republican Rep. Tom MacArthur of New Jersey walked over to Crowley on the Democratic side of the House floor and accused him of "politicizing" the chaplain controversy."I just walked up afterward and said 'Joe.' Just one month after the Troy Police Department put out a call for followers in order to get a police cat, the department "interviewed" three police cat candidates on Friday.With the help of the Michigan Humane Society, the three candidates will interview on Friday morning.On March 6, the department put the call out on Twitter saying if they got 10,000 followers by April the chief said they could get a police cat. Just over a week later, the department surpassed that goal. 495
