A 12-year veteran of the New York Police Department is accused of putting a hit on her ex-husband and a juvenile girl.A confidential source told the FBI that in February Valerie Cincinelli, 34, had asked him to hire a hitman to kill her estranged husband and the source's daughter, according to court documents.Cincinelli allegedly gave the source ,000 in cash to pay the hitman, and over the next few months they discussed how to kill the two and establish solid alibis, the documents said.Cincinelli allegedly told the source to make her husband's death look like a robbery and to run over the source's daughter -- a minor-- with a car.Authorities say she tracked the girl's whereabouts on social media and plotted how to arrange their deaths with the source until Friday, when she was told by a Suffolk County Police Department detective that her estranged husband had died and there would be an investigation. About a half an hour later, the source showed her photos of the crime scene the hitman had sent via text, the documents said. But that hitman was actually an FBI agent, and that day she was arrested for attempting to hire someone to commit murders, according to the documents.Cincinelli appeared in court on Friday and was held without bail, according to CNN affiliate 1295
“Nationwide it's been hitting pretty hard,” Dr. Suchitra Rao. a Pediatric Infectious Disease Doctor at Children’s Hospital Colorado, said. This flu season, however, doctors are seeing something unusual.“It’s a very unusual type of year in terms of the virus we’re seeing,” Dr. Rao said. “We’ve been seeing a lot of Influenza B activity.”Typically, the flu season will start off with one or two waves of Influenza A and end with Influenza B, but this year, that’s not the case.“Influenza B tends to be more deadly or more virulent in the very young or the very old,” Dr. Steve Feagins, the Medical Director at Hamilton County Public Health in Ohio, said.Across the country, kids have been getting sick, causing irreversible damage, or death.A 16-year-old girl in Dallas died last week from flu complications. She was a healthy, active teenager in her junior year of high school.Another 4-year-old girl in Iowa came down with the flu, and it left her blind. The illness caused Jade Phillips’ brain to swell, affecting her vision. The Center for Disease Control reported a total of 32 flu-related pediatric deaths this season, double compared to this time last year. Twenty-one were associated with Influenza B, and five of those were due to a specific strain called B/Victoria.Dr. Rao said this is the highest number they’ve seen this early in the flu season over the last 17 years.“Of those kids who are being hospitalized, they tend to have a more severe illness,” Dr. Rao said. “So we are seeing a lot more kids end up in the ICU this time of year compared to what we might be seeing in previous years.”It’s important to be aware -- especially in children and older adults -- because the type of flu is not always obvious.“You can’t really differentiate one type from the other in terms of how people are feeling,” Dr. Rao said. Both doctors say the flu shot can help. The CDC shows getting the vaccine can reduce your risk by 40 to 60 percent.“It certainly decreases the severity of the flu,” Dr. Feagins said. “So if you find yourself with the flu and you’ve had the vaccine, hopefully it will be less severe.”Getting the flu can worsen existing conditions, or cause other problems such as respiratory issues. The best way to prevent infection is to wash your hands, avoid contact with anyone that has the flu, keep your hands away from your face, and clean surfaces that may have come into contact with flu germs, the CDC advises. 2442

The Senate Finance Committee put big pharmaceutical companies on blast for their sky-high drug prices. Seven drug executives were grilled in a heated exchange with lawmakers, who were questioning their pricing practices. Pharmaceutical company Pfizer has raised the price of the popular diabetes drug Lyrica by 163 percent since 2012. Each of the pharmaceutical companies insisted the high costs is because it takes a lot of money to research and develop better more effective drugs. The Senate committee did not agree. The Big Pharma panel did offer ideas to find solutions to lower drug prices, including passing rebates. Additionally, Merck, as well as the majority of the panel, say they support the stop of price hikes on medicines that have no competition and encourages competition elsewhere. However, Senate members like Maria Cantwell of Washington, say Big Pharma says it wants to solve the issue, but ultimately didn't offer anything worthy to create change. "I think if you guys can't agree that these basic market functions that allow people to buy in bulk or on discount is good ideas for consumers, then I don't think we are going to come up with anything we agree on here,” Cantwell said during the hearing.Lawmakers, including some of those on the Senate Finance Committee, receive funds every year from the pharmaceutical industry. The Center for Responsive Politics found drug companies spent more than 0 million lobbying last year. More can be found on the group’s website opensecrets.org. 1531
