KANSAS CITY, Mo. — According to the FBI, sovereign citizens live in the United States but don't identify as part of the country. Therefore, "they believe they don’t have to answer to any government authority, including courts, taxing entities, motor vehicle departments, or law enforcement."It often makes their interactions with police difficult — so much so, that the FBI considers The Sovereign Citizen Movement a form of domestic terrorism. Police in Sugar Creek, Missouri released body-cam footage Tuesday of one such recent interaction.Aaron Fletcher identifies as a sovereign citizen. He refused to pull over for police, who were attempting to arrest him for outstanding warrants, and refused to get out of his car after pulling over near his home.Police eventually broke windows on the car and pulled Fletcher out."I have represented a few over the years," criminal defense attorney John Picerno said. "Their No. 1 belief is that they are not subject to the control of United States laws, and that's simply not true."For people who hold such beliefs, interactions with police can be confrontational."You add into the mix someone who doesn't believe law enforcement officers have legal authority to apprehend, It's extremely difficult and ... that's why you see situations where you see officers using the force that they use to get that person out of the vehicle," Picerno said.Dr. John Hamilton — a retired Kansas City, Missouri, police officer and criminal justice professor at Park University — said officers need to be familiar with the group or things can turn ugly."You don't know what you are dealing with either." Hamilton said. "You don't know if someone who really is well-versed on all the laws that they read, the federal laws, that say they are empowered to do that. Then, some don't know those kind of things, but just decide that is sounds like something interesting to do."It's also difficult for attorneys who represent "sovereign citizens.""It's harmful for them, because they say those things in open court, they are seen as being in defiance of our laws and of our government," Picerno said. "Naturally, prosecutors and judges don't take very kindly to that kind of attitude."Hamilton has advice to anyone who thinks they are above the law and are part of the movement."I would tell them the same thing I would tell anybody, which is to cooperate — to make sure you show your hands, to do what the officer tells you to do as long as it lawful, and appropriate," he said. "If you have problems, you can settle it at a later time."Many police departments are working to address how to deal with such individuals. The KCPD trains recruits at the academy how to identify someone who is a sovereign citizen and also has an investigative unit that deals with incidents involving the movement. 2826

In a remarkable admission, German Cardinal Reinhard Marx said Saturday that documents that could have contained proof of clergy sexual abuse in the Catholic Church were destroyed or never drawn up."Files that could have documented the terrible deeds and named those responsible were destroyed or not even created," said Marx, the archbishop of Munich and president of the German Bishops' Conference."The stipulated procedures and processes for the prosecution offenses were deliberately not complied with," he added, "but instead canceled and overridden."Such standard practices will make it clear that it is not transparency which damages the church, but rather the acts of abuse committed, the lack of transparency, or the ensuing coverup."Marx's stunning admission came on the third day of a historic Vatican summit focused on combating clergy sexual abuse. The day's theme was transparency, which Marx said could help to tackle abuse of power.A member of Pope Francis' inner circle of advisers, Marx is one of the most powerful men in the Catholic Church. The four-day summit of 190 Catholic leaders, including 114 bishops from around the world, will conclude Sunday with an address by Pope Francis. On Thursday, at the beginning of the unprecedented summit, Francis urged the bishops to take "concrete measures" to combat the clergy abuse scandal. At a press conference later Saturday, Marx said that the information about destroying files came from a study commissioned by German bishops in 2014. The study was "scientific" and did not name the particular church leaders or dioceses in Germany that destroyed the files."The study indicates that some documents were manipulated or did not contain what they should have contained," Marx said. "The fact in itself cannot be denied."Marx said he doubts the destruction of files related to clergy sexual abuse was limited to one diocese."I assume Germany is not an isolated case."The report commissioned by the German bishops also revealed that "at least" 3,677 cases of child sex abuse by German clergy occurred between 1946 and 2014. 2096

JOHNSTOWN, Colo. – After leaving a negative online review, a customer says she was threatened with a lawsuit.Liz Griswold paid for a ghost tour in Denver, but bad weather prevented her from feeling comfortable making the 50-minute drive from Johnstown. She tried to cancel her booking hours before the event, but when she was unable to cancel or receive a refund, she left a review.“My friend and I signed up to go on this tour tonight and could not make it because of the icy roads, snow, 20-degree weather. When they say no refund they mean it. We wasted a total of dollars to sit at home because they refused to cancel the tour,” a screenshot of her review showed. 683

In case you’re wondering how an arrest in NYC goes down. The guy has made absolutely no indication that he would flee or fight and wasn’t trying to hide.If you can’t see, the reason everyone moved was because all the police had taken out their guns and aimed at him. pic.twitter.com/dAstrtMntz— Elad Nehorai (@PopChassid) October 25, 2019 350
