BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government said Thursday it plans to increase the land supply available for residential property, in a bid to guide the country's runaway property market into more healthy development.China will supply 180,000 hectares of land nationwide to build houses this year, excluding the Tibet Autonomous Region, compared with an area of 76,461 hectares in 2009, the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) said.Areas for low-cost housing, renovated shanty houses and small- and medium-sized apartments will be allocated more than 70 percent of the total land supply, the ministry said.In breakdown, areas for small- and medium-sized apartments alone would reach 80,431 hectares this year, exceeding China's total land supply in 2009.Some 35,786 hectares would be allocated for renovated shanty houses, accounting for 19 percent of this year's total land supply.Areas for low-cost housing, consisting of affordable housing and low-rent housing, would be given 24,454 hectares, more than double the 2009 figure.The central government vowed to build three million low-cost apartments for low-income families and renovate 2.8 million shanty houses at the Third Session of the 11th National People's Congress in March this year."We merely need 12,000 hectares to meet the goal set by the central government to build the three million low-cost apartments, well below this year's planned land supply for this part," said Liao Yonglin, director of the department of land use management of the MLR.

BEIJING, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Saturday called for more concrete measures in quake relief efforts in response to the instructions of China's top leadership.Hui, also the head of the State Council's quake-relief headquarters, made the remarks at the sixth plenary meeting of the headquarters.China's top leadership on earlier Saturday has urged all-out efforts to rescue trapped people in the quake zone in northwestern Qinghai Province at a meeting chaired by Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, and attended by other members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.Hui stressed a put-people-first principle in the relief work. Efforts to search for and rescue the buried survivors as well as offering medical treatment to the injured people are still the top priorities, Hui said.The relief work should be carried out in a scientific, orderly, effective and well-organized way, Hui said. There should be no "blind spot" in the rescue work and epidemic prevention, he said.Military forces, local authorities and the local people should keep in close cooperation in the relief work, he said.

BEIJING, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Yu Zaiqing, vice president of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), on Wednesday paid tribute to the late former International Olympic Committee chief Juan Antonio Samaranch, naming him "an old friend of the Chinese people."Yu said in a statement, "Samaranch is an old friend of the Chinese people. He had always hoped that China could host an Olympic Games. And his wish was finally realized in 2008. The Chinese people thank him."Yu, who is also an International Olympic Committee vice president, added, "We want to express our deep condolences to the death of Mr. Samaranch. He has made tremendous contributions to the Olympic movement."He Zhenliang, the Honorary President of the COC and one of China's most famous sports figure, was deeply saddened by the death of Samaranch, whom he worked with for 20 years since he was elected to the IOC in 1981."The Olympic Movement lost a great leader, China lost a close friend and I lost a very close friend and an old brother," said the 80-year-old He.It was during Samaranch's reign that China returned to the Olympics in 1984 after a 32-year absence. And awarding the 2008 Olympics to Beijing was widely regarded as one of Samaranch's final legacies at the end of his Olympic reign in 2001."Samaranch has made great efforts to help China regain the positions in IOC and other international sports organizations. He also made great efforts to support China to have a bigger say in the international sports arena," He said."We can never forget President Samaranch's help in Beijing's successful bid and the exceptional success of the 2008 Olympic Games. When the preparations for the Beijing Olympics was disturbed by some political factors, he always firmly stood behind us," He told Xinhua in a telephone interview.Samaranch died in a hospital in Barcelona on Wednesday at 89.
