A former University of Airzona athlete was the first witness today in the trial of a coach accused of choking her.Baillie Gibson was a shot put and discus thrower at Arizona. She says former track coach Craig Carter choked her and threatened to slash her with a box cutter when she tried to end a two-year sexual relationship. In opening statements, prosecutor Jonathan Mosher read the jury a series of texts between Gibson and Carter where he became more and more threatening as she said she planned to leave Tucson after graduating. She went to his office in McKale Center, the university's basketball arena and training center. That's where Carter allegedly choked her and threatened to slash her with a box cutter.Cater confessed to a University of Arizona Police officer. Carter's attorney, Dan Cooper, read the jury many of the same texts but said they show Carter's attack was the result of a momentary loss of control and was not the sort of deliberate attack required for a conviction.Prosecutors expect a short trial. The rest of their witness list only includes two police officers and a friend of Baillie Gibson. 1144

A day after Republicans attempted to portray the Democratic Party's platform as "far-left socialism," the Trump campaign will attempt to continue that messaging during the second night of speeches at the Republican National Convention. On Monday, speakers attempted to paint Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden as part of the party's left-wing, despite his moderate record. Speakers warned of progressive Democrats' calls to defund police departments and institute gun control measures.Tuesday's program will attempt to further those talking points. According to the Trump Campaign website, the second day of the RNC will focus on "how Democrats' radical left agenda will deny Americans the opportunity to achieve their full potential."The theme of Tuesday's program is "Land of Opportunity," which includes a focus on the Trump policies that Republicans say "empower" all Americans.Tuesday's slate of speakers is highlighted by Sec. of State Mike Pompeo, one of Trump's fiercest allies. Pompeo's speech will likely focus on Trump's defeat of the Islamic State group, his attempts to normalize relations with North Korea and his attempts to push back against national security threats from China.Pompeo drew criticisms last week for tweeting a Simpsons GIF to mock House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Also expected to speak is Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron — the man currently in charge of investigating the death of Breonna Taylor a the hands of police in March. Two of Trump's children are also slated to deliver addresses — Eric, his second-oldest son, and Tiffany, his youngest daughter.Below is Tuesday's list of speakers in the order in which they are expected to appear.Pastor Norma Urrabazo, International Church of Las VegasMyron Lizer, Vice President of the Navajo NationRichard Beasley, former FBI special agent an President of Global Intelligence NetworkJon Ponder, founder and CEO of HOPE for Prisoners, Inc.Sen. together -- and I am committed to getting that done."Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reiterated that Democrats were willing to work with their peers across the aisle."We gave them many of the things they asked for, including copper [catastrophic] plans and wide waiver authority," said Matt House, Schumer's spokesman. "The Republican leadership is so eager to pass Graham-Cassidy that they're scuttling a balanced, bipartisan negotiation."The health committee held four hearings in earlier this month in hopes of finding a path on how to shore up Obamacare in the short term. They met with governors from both parties, as well as insurance commissioners and other health care experts, to learn what needed to be done.At the top of the Democrats' wish list was guaranteed funding for a key set of Obamacare subsidies at least through next year, a measure that governors, insurers and others have long stressed is critical. Alexander and several other Republicans acknowledged the need to continue supporting the health reform law, but that didn't sit well with some conservative GOP lawmakers. Many witnesses also said they could use federal funds to help shield insurers from high-cost patients in reinsurance programs.Republicans, meanwhile, stressed that they wanted to give states more flexibility and control over their own health care programs. They looked to expand the use of waivers from Obamacare's strict set of regulations, including those that protect those with pre-existing conditions. That was a major stumbling block for Democrats. 2972
