Gina Haspel was confirmed Thursday to be the first female director of the CIA with the help of votes from a half-dozen Senate Democrats.Haspel was confirmed in a 54-45 vote, the culmination of a roller-coaster nomination that appeared to be in danger at several points after she was abruptly selected by President Donald Trump in March.Three Republicans opposed Haspel's nomination: Sens. And they expressed frustration that the CIA -- and Haspel herself -- refused to make public a full accounting of her CIA career and her role in the interrogation program.They argued that the CIA selectively released details publicly about Haspel's career -- like the 2011 internal CIA report that cleared her of wrongdoing in the tapes' destruction -- in order to bolster her nomination.The CIA did make classified materials about Haspel's record available to senators. Officials around the country are worried the shortened timeline, impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak this year, will mean fewer responses than normal. Senator Brian Benjamin of Harlem said it’s not just on Nichson's birthday, but every day she's a political powerhouse.Julie Menin, the director of NYC Census 2020, said Nichson’s message is especially critical right now because New York City is facing an economic crisis.As of Friday, New York City had a response rate of 59.3 percent compared to the nationwide rate of 65.7 percent.The census is a survey required by the U.S. Constitution. It takes just 10 minutes to fill out and can be done online.Why is it so important? Its results are used to determine how much money municipalities gets from Washington for everything from housing to hospitals, roads, bridges, and schools. HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — A hate crime investigation is underway by the Virginia Commonweath's Attorney against the self-proclaimed president of the Virginia KKK after he allegedly drove his pickup truck into a group of protesters on Sunday.36-year-old Harry Rogers of Hanover, Virginia, was arrested Sunday after police say several witnesses saw Rogers rev his engine and drive into a crowd of protesters.The person who called police was checked by rescue at the scene and refused further treatment.The protest was one of the dozens of anti-police brutality marches that have taken place around the nation following the Memorial Day death of George Floyd.No one was injured during the incident. One protester reported that his bicycle was damaged.Rogers appeared in Henrico Court Monday morning, where he agreed to receive a court-appointed attorney. He was formally charged with two felonies — attempted malicious wounding and destruction of property — as well as misdemeanor assault and battery.During Monday's court appearance, prosecutors alleged Rogers told his arresting officers that he was the president of the Ku Klux Klan in Virginia and the highest-ranking member currently not in prison."The accused, by his own admission and by a cursory glance at social media, is an admitted leader of the Ku Klux Klan and a propagandist for Confederate ideology," Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor said in a statement. It wasn't until she received a convalescent plasma donation that she started to turn a corner.“They helped me hold the phone up to my ear, so I could give a verbal consent. To help me sit me up in the bed, literally, they were holding me and helping me sign the paper, so I could give consent. And I just remember the nurses were like, ‘say yes.’ Yes, I remember that and honestly, I feel like I owe my life to them and to the person who donated for sure.”The nurses helped Solt take a picture the moment she got the plasma. She says it saved her life and now she's advocating for others to donate.Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar also pushed for donations Wednesday during a briefing on vaccines. HHS is increasingly concerned about supply with rising cases.Plasma is given to hospitalized patients earlier now.People with COVID antibodies can donate plasma as often as every seven days for up to three months. Just one donation can help up to four people.“You have the chance to truly, truly make a difference in life or death for somebody,” said Solt.The American Red Cross saw their distributions of convalescent plasma increase 250% in November compared to September. Global wildlife populations have fallen by 60% in just over four decades, as accelerating pollution, deforestation, climate change and other manmade factors have created a "mindblowing" crisis, the World Wildlife Fund has warned in a damning new report.The total numbers of more than 4,000 mammal, bird, fish, reptile and amphibian species declined rapidly between 1970 and 2014, the Living Planet Report 2018 says.Current rates of species extinction are now up to 1,000 times higher than before human involvement in animal ecosystems became a factor.The proportion of the planet's land that is free from human impact is projected to drop from a quarter to a tenth by 2050, as habitat removal, hunting, pollution, disease and climate change continue to spread, the organization added.The group has called for an international treaty, modeled on the Paris climate agreement, to be drafted to protect wildlife and reverse human impacts on nature.It warned that current efforts to protect the natural world are not keeping up with the speed of manmade destruction.The crisis is "unprecedented in its speed, in its scale and because it is single-handed," said Marco Lambertini, the WWF's director general.
