With wildfires impacting many American wineries, many winemakers are having tougher times testing their grapes.“Everything is so bad, it’s funny,” said Ashley Trout, owner and operator of Brook and Bull Cellars in Walla Walla, Washington.With professional labs that test grapes for smoke taint back logged for more than a month, Trout is now literally taking matters into her own hands, testing grapes during a natural fermentation process and using her senses to spot signs of smoke taint.Trout says instead of waiting five weeks for results from a lab, she’s now getting them in five days on her own.With more challenges in the industry, wine experts say more winemakers are trying creative techniques.“Everybody is going back to the drawing board thinking, 'Okay, what can I do, what will compliment this wine I’m making,’” said Anita Oberholster, Ph.D., with the University of California, Davis viticulture and enology program.She says wildfires have forced many wineries to go back to the basic of wine making.“People are throwing their recipe books away,” Oberholster said. “If you can, rather do hand picking than machine harvesting because it’s more gentle on the grapes.”Oberholster estimates about 20% of the grapes grown in 2020 were not harvested, which could cause this multi-billion dollar industry to raise its prices.Back in the vineyards, Trout is reluctantly adjusting to this new norm.“I have never wanted to make wine in a bucket before,” she said.With wildfires still raging across the West Coast, the area that produces 85% of America’s wine, winemakers like Trout will be feeling the impacts long after the smoke settles.“It’s 2020,” she said. “So, we’re going to make some bucket wine and see how it goes.” 1738

"So we took it upon ourselves to not do what could be the easy way out ... and we turned it into a trafficking case."Not only did it appear women were living there, he said, but they were cooking on the back steps of the spa and sleeping on the very massage tables where the johns had done their deeds.There were other worrying signs, Snyder said. The women didn't have access to transportation, they were moved from location to location and some were averaging as many as eight clients a day. They worked deep into the night with no days off, the sheriff said.More arrests to comeThough as many as 200 alleged johns have been or will be arrested and police have seized at least million in assets, Snyder called the investigation "the tip of the tip of the iceberg." What's been made public is but a fragment of a massive international operation stretching from China to New York to Florida's Treasure Coast, the name given to the Atlantic side of the peninsula.Despite the broad range of people apparently involved -- and the likelihood some will face charges far harsher than solicitation of prostitution -- Snyder singled out the johns, many of whom are married or have children, as especially culpable in sex trafficking."Is it the suspect we watched at Palm Beach International Airport with a picture of a young Asian woman that he would meet, that we would see in a very short period of time at a massage parlor involved in this?" he asked."I would contend today that it's the men in the shadows that are the monsters in this equation. And without moralizing, none of this would happen if those men were not availing themselves and participating in this human misery," he continued. "Wherever you find end users who will use this, you will find these spas."Refusing to call the women prostitutes, Snyder said the victimized women were coerced, lured to the United States with promises of work as housekeepers or waiters, only to have their passports snatched away once they arrived stateside."The problem with these cases is that the coercion is so subtle sometimes that it's impossible for us to uncover," he said. "The coercion is not that they're at gunpoint. The coercion is more subtle, nuanced and more difficult to discern. They may have loved ones in China and they're afraid if they cooperate. They look at the police here as their enemy."Bust fits a scriptExperts say some aspects of the Jupiter case are textbook human trafficking. Owners or groups may operate multiple spas, according to Polaris, which works to combat slavery and estimates there are at least 7,000 such businesses in the United States. In the Jupiter case, Snyder said, officers executed search warrants on four Florida spas suspected of links to Orchids of Asia.The victims work and live in locations with high security -- possibly including opaque windows, bars or boards over the windows, barbed wire and security cameras -- and may show outward signs of abuse, poor hygiene, malnourishment or fatigue, Polaris says.Pressed for details on their lives, the women, typically Chinese or South Korean, may say they're visiting or not know their home address, have little knowledge about the city they're in, lack a sense of time or provide scripted, inconsistent stories, according to Polaris.The women are often young or middle-aged, underpaid or unpaid, have few or no possessions, work long hours without breaks and are recruited through false promises and manipulation, the organization says.Contrary to beliefs the women are abducted and forced into sex work, Martina Vandenberg, founder of the Human Trafficking Legal Center, says most women often enter the sex work industry unwittingly."Most of the people who arrive at US airports who are destined to be trafficking victims have no idea that they're going to be trafficked," she said. "They're coming to the United States for a much better life and they think that they have hit the jackpot by coming to the United States." 4279

The tweet and Facebook post touts the arrest and seizure of 106 pounds of marijuana.According to Dee, it was actually hemp with undetectable levels of THC, making it legal. "100 percent legal. I don't make the law, I just go by the law," Dee said.Dee says many of his clients are sick people who use the hemp for pain management. The shipment was sent out Friday by Fox Holler Farms in Vermont."It's all legal, and we did everything by the books," Buddy Koerner with Fox Holler Farms said. "We really tried to do everything the right way."But Federal Express tipped off the police. The hemp was seized, and when the NYPD told Dee's brother, Ronan, to pick up the package, Ronan was arrested.Thursday, the NYPD stopped short of admitting a mistake."We field tested it as marijuana (and) called the individual in. He was placed under arrest. It's currently in the lab at this point to make a final determination if it was hemp," NYPD Chief of Department Terence A. Monahan said. "The individual did not have a bill of laden justifying its delivery, so this is all part of an ongoing investigation."But Dee is in possession of documents that he says are proof the shipment contained all the necessary paperwork proving it was legal hemp."We sent them all our paperwork, plus the paperwork within all the boxes. We have proof of that because it was seized by Vermont police. The Vermont police made a statement saying all paperwork was inside the boxes," Dee said. "We're extremely angry at FedEx. the package was already seized and cleared by the Vermont police."The government classifies hemp as any plant from the cannabis family that contains less than 0.3 percent THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.Dee says his hemp shipment was certified by a DEA certified lab to contain 0.14 percent THC.The main problem now is the longer the hemp is held, the quality is diminished. Dee says he's already lost clients and could lose up to ,000."If I lose this product, I'm going out of business, I'm completely done," Dee said.Dee took to Instagram in defense of his business and said his brother was falsely arrested. He's gotten a lot of support on social media."We're in contact with our attorney. We want our product back ASAP," he said. "We want an apology for my brother's arrest. This guy has never been to jail in his life. He's traumatized."Dee's brother was released on his own recognizance. Dee is also extremely angry at FedEx and says he may take legal action.
