SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 45-year-old man got into an argument with two males at the entrance to an alley in San Diego's Valencia Park neighborhood and was shot in the back Friday evening.The shooting was reported just before 8 p.m. at the entrance to an alley at 53rd Street and Imperial Avenue, San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims said.The man was standing with his girlfriend when the two males walked up, argued and one male fired several shots at the victim, hitting him once in the back, Heims said. The suspects fled the scene in separate vehicles, one of them red.Paramedics took the victim to a hospital where his injury was not believed life-threatening, Heims said.Gang detectives were investigating, Heims said. 738

SAN DIEGO (AP and KGTV) -- Washing Senators are remembering John McCain's momentous vote against a Republican effort to repeal the Obama-era health law. Of those remembering McCain is Sen Susan Collins, who told CNN's "State of the Union" that she and GOP colleague Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — both repeal opponents — spoke to McCain before the July 2017 vote because they knew he was struggling with the decision.Collins says he pointed to them and simply said, "You two are right!"Vice President Mike Pence was waiting to speak with McCain next, Collins says, but she knew McCain's "no" decision would stick. Collins said, "Once John McCain made up his mind about something, there was no shaking him."McCain would later famously hold up his hand and vote no, ending the measure. -SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND (CNS) - The remains of seven U.S. Marines and a Navy sailor were recovered Friday after going missing near San Clemente Island when their amphibious vehicle sank during a training mission last month.The remains were recovered during underwater salvage operations, the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force announced Friday evening. The remains will be transferred to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to be prepared for burial."Our hearts and thoughts of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit are with the families of our recovered Marines and Sailor," said Col. Christopher Bronzi, commanding officer of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. "We hope the successful recovery of our fallen warriors brings some measure of comfort."The U.S. military announced Tuesday it had located the amphibious assault vehicle that sank last week off the coast of San Diego County, killing nine young servicemen, and confirmed the presence of human remains where the vessel came to rest on the sea floor.The naval Undersea Rescue Command made the discovery near San Clemente Island on Monday using video systems remotely operated aboard the HOS Dominator, a merchant vessel whose crew specializes in undersea search and rescue.The amphibious troop-transport vehicle was en route to a waiting ship during a maritime training mission about 80 miles west of Encinitas when it foundered for unknown reasons about 5:45 p.m. July 30, according to Lt. Gen. Joseph Osterman, commanding general of I MEF.The 26-ton vessel went down roughly 1,600 yards from a beach on the northwest side of the island in water nearly 400 feet deep.Seven members of the Camp Pendleton-based crew survived the accident. SAN DIEGO — (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Fairgrounds is weighing its legal options after the KAABOO Music announced that it would move to Petco Park in 2020, the venue's CEO told 10News.Fairgrounds chief executive Tim Fennell declined a formal interview, but pointed to language in the Fairgrounds' contract with KAABOO that blocks the festival from holding a similar event within a 75-mile radius the year it cancels the contract. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A firefighter suffered a minor hand injury Thursday morning while working to extinguish a fire that damaged a North Park business, authorities said.The blaze was reported around 5:30 a.m. at a single-story business on El Cajon Boulevard near Illinois Street, just west of Interstate 805, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Crews responded to the scene and found smoke and flames coming from the roof of the building, the agency reported. No one was inside the building at the time and firefighters knocked down the flames within about 20 minutes.One firefighter was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment of a minor hand injury.The cause of the blaze was under investigation. 724
