The House of Representatives successfully completed an override of a presidential veto for the first time since the Obama administration on Monday. With overwhelming majorities in both caucuses, the House issued an override of the National Defense Authorization Act.The bill needed a two-thirds majority for a successful override.The bill returns to the Senate, where it will also need a two-thirds majority to pass.The veto was President Donald Trump’s ninth since taking office. Eight previous vetoes were successfully sustained.The National Defense Authorization Act provides the Pentagon with 0 billion in funds, and authorized pay raises for members of the armed forces.Trump objected to the bill due to the Pentagon’s policy of renaming US bases that are named for confederate leaders. Trump also used the legislation as an opportunity to state his grievances on Section 230, a US code that offers legal protection for internet sites and social media companies.A number of Republicans have joined Democrats in condemning Trump for objecting to the defense funding bill.“It’s definitely been erratic at the end here,” Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger said in a Monday interview on MSNBC. “I think he’s more focused on grievances than finishing out strong… The NDAA, veto of that makes no sense, but hopefully, we override that. Section 230, if you have a real issue with Section 230, that’s fine but the defense bill isn’t the place to deal with it. The mother of a Michigan high school student cried in court as a judge said her son's million bond would remain in place, but that he would consider written arguments from the teen's defense attorney next month.  The 17-year-old DeBruyne, a South Lyon High School student is charged with Making a Threat of Terrorism, which is a felony, after the teen allegedly asked friends on Snapchat if they wanted to reenact what happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida where 17 people were killed days earlier. One friend reported the post to police. DeBruyne lives in Green Oak Township with his parents, and after receiving report of the alleged threat, police went to the family's home where they said the teen had no firearms in his possession. Friends and some fellow students on South Lyon High's Cross Country team and their parents showed up at court Wednesday in support of DeBruyne. "I don't think Ryan DeBruyne is a danger to anybody," said Michelle Klevering who also called her son's friend a "very good kid" and "very responsible."DeBruyne's defense attorney, Zack Glaza, asked Judge Travis Reeds to consider lowering his client's million dollar bond. Judge Reeds said he would consider written motions on the matter on March 22 when DeBruyne is due back in court for a preliminary examination.   1391

The presidential race remains too close to call, and vote totals show President Donald Trump's lead slowly evaporating in some key battleground states. In recent days, Trump has attempted to use his favorite social media platform to spread disinformation about the election process — but Twitter has fought back.Between early Tuesday morning — after polls had closed in most of the U.S. — and noon ET on Friday, Trump has sent a tweet or retweet 37 times. Twitter has applied disclaimers to 13 of those tweets.Of those disclaimers, 12 indicate that "some or all of the content" about the election in the President's tweet is "disputed" and possibly "misleading." Twitter also added a disclaimer noting that races in Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina remain too close to call to Trump's Wednesday morning tweet in which he "claimed" all three states "for Electoral Vote purposes." As of Friday, those states are still too close to call.Trump railed against Twitter's fact checks in a Friday morning tweet, saying the social media platform is "out of control."In many cases, Twitter has added disclaimers to Trump's tweets in the moments after the President sends them. The social media service began fact-checking Trump earlier this year, but prior to this week, it would often take several hours to apply disclaimers.Trump has attempted to sow doubt in the electoral process for months. On the campaign trail, he often argued without basis that mail-in ballots would be fraudulent.The President's attempt to discredit mail-in ballot appears to have had a partisan effect on mail-in voting. The head of United States Customs and Border Protection said border agents "prevented a dangerous situation getting worse" when they fired tear gas at a group of migrants who rushed the US-Mexico border Sunday.CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan told reporters Monday that as many as 1,000 people that were part of a migrant caravan traveling through Central America and Mexico sought to enter the US illegally.He said that according to CBP's initial report, 69 people were apprehended entering the US. McAleenan said he was not aware of any successful illegal entries by caravan members into the US."[CBP] effectively managed an extremely dangerous situation involving over 1,000 individuals who sought to enter the US unlawfully in large groups. They did so safely and without any reported serious injuries on either side of the border," McAleenan said.Sunday's incident marked an escalation of tensions that have been mounting since groups of Central American migrants began arriving in Tijuana a few weeks ago on their journey to attempt to gain entry to the US. The incident began with a march to the border that organizers said would be peaceful. In response, CBP deployed additional personnel to San Ysidro, California, on Sunday in expectation of demonstrations on both sides of the border.McAleenan said individuals breached the border fence to the east of San Ysidro and some went west and sought to enter through the Tijuana River channel. He described "assaultive behavior" by some migrants in both locations. Border Patrol agents countered using "less lethal devices," which included tear gas and "other projectiles," but not rubber bullets. He said CBP does not have rubber bullets in its inventory on the border.McAleenan said, per protocol, the decision to fire was made by agents on the scene using their professional judgment, and also per protocol the incident will be reviewed. He also described CBP as having responded with use of force to primarily adult males throwing rocks.However, video of the scene also showed a cloud of tear gas that sent people running and screaming, including families with young children.Four agents were hit with rocks, but because of their protective gear they were not seriously injured, McAleenan said.Sunday's melee closed one of the world's busiest international crossings, San Ysidro Port of Entry, near San Diego, to vehicle and pedestrian traffic for several hours. The New York attorney general is trying to break up the National Rifle Association over allegations of mismanagement and the abuse of member money.Adam Winkler, a UCLA law professor who specializes in the Second Amendment, says this is just the start. The legal battle could go for another year or two.If the NRA dissolves at that point, it would have a huge impact on American politics, but that doesn't mean the end of the gun debate.“What happens is the resources of the NRA would be distributed in a way that is designed to match the donors' intent,” said Winkler. “And that means that money would go to gun rights organizations and would go towards fighting against gun control in most, most circumstances.”Winkler says the NRA dissolving isn't the only potential outcome. The attorney general is also seeking less drastic repercussions, like removing certain in-house lawyers or board members. That includes Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president.We don't yet know exactly what evidence there is.
